A lot of people describe Scalzi’s Old Man's War novels as military science fiction, but I would classify its sequel Zoë’s Tale as a space opera. It’s a story about, well, Zoë, a teenage girl whose parents are invited to take leadership roles in building a colony on a new planet. Zoë is an enthusiastic member of the group sent to colonize Roanoke, despite the risks—and the risks are considerable even before the political machinations of greater powers boil to the surface. Writing Group / Re: Flash Fiction

I have a question then along those lines. I am in a contest, I am writing flash fiction. I have never done it before ever. The contest limit is 1500 words. After all you have been saying, that sounds like alot. For contests like these, do these entries usually have to be the 'start' of a story?? Or can it be like a middle chapter or something? And I'm struggling with whether or not dialogue is appropriate, and how much information to give the reader in the allotted word limit.
For a first timer at flash fiction and a fairly new writer, I'm confused.
Some of the previous entries have been helpful too though, so thanks for doing that even though you didn't know I was reading.

Site News / Re: Introduce yourself - right on!

I am Lauren and I live in St George but, grew up in good ole California. I like to write, though I don't do it as much as I should. I also am an avid reader, the Mistborn trilogy being one of my favorites ever. I'm always trying to improve and get feedback and assistance in writing and the like so, here I am.
I did participate in NaNoWriMo 2008 and won. That was the first time I completed a manuscript I started. It was quite rewarding and encouraging to continue writing and finishing something else! And that's about all I feel like saying.
