Brandon Sanderson / Re: Mist Spirit *Mistborn Spoilers*

Well since all of the epigraphs in WoA got altered by Ruin, I'd say it's likely a subtle manipulation, though I don't know what purpose that serves. I have a document that compares the real version with the version Ruin created, and there are other changes that are WAY more significant. This doesn't really seem that important.

So following that logic, it might also be a typo. But given the amount of copy/pasting that I'm assuming went on with these epigraphs, that also doesn't really make much sense.

However, you would think that if there were some obscure reference, and notes in the margins said, "This most likely means X," the woman reading the book would say, "Oh, by the way, that confusing sentence that made no sense? It most likely means X." But I suppose it's feasible that Dalinar's missing something.

I think it more likely, however, that Dalinar just isn't understanding everything that's been read to him.

If the Oathstone works like compulsion, I'd be a little put out as well. I think it's much cooler that Szeth's sense of honor is so strong that it keeps him living a life he hates to maintain it.

*Cowers in horrified memory of Geometry Tests and all those incredibly useless facts we had to memorize that can now be easily derived*

I like the idea about Szeth's Oathstone being a tracer of sorts. And I can see him placing enough weight in his honor that if someone with lots of influence in Shinovar (ie a stone shaman) were to tell him that the only honor he could achieve in life was through serving the holder of his oathstone, it'd hold him. His oathstone isn't like the Oath Rod in WoT where it compels him to act, IMO.

I'm wondering if it would be possible for Radiants to power the Shardplate themselves. After all, the primary purpose of the gems (at least this is how I read it) is to provide Stormlight for the Plate. Theoretically, this is why Szeth's surgebinding interferes with it. He pulls the Stormlight out of the gems and the Shardplate has no power source.

If he were to consciously feed Stormlight into the Plate at a slow rate, though, I can see that working. Maybe that's what was what the Radiants originally did, and the gems were just there for them to continue to renew their supply of Stormlight. Like batteries.

Well, I imagine that access to metals is controlled quite closely in the Pits. Also, Mare really has no reason to want to destroy all the Atium in the area, since it happens to be the only thing keeping her and Kelsier alive. Tin wouldn't really help her to get out of the pits, and while it might kill all the atium in the area, it would also result in the death of most of the skaa there.

Though whether Mare knows that is an interesting question.... but I'd guess metals are tightly controlled enough that it's a non-issue.

Of course, that's the idea behind Odium killing other Shards, so it makes an equal amount of sense (if not a greater amount) that Cultivation is dead, killed off by Odium the same as all the others who opposed him.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that avoids partial previews of unreleased books. Why should I hook myself before the final product is available?

Because, like me, you find yourself utterly unable to resist?

Seriously, the Prologue, Chapter 1, and Chapter 8 are pretty awesome. Could I have lived without them? Yes. Should I have? Probably? Do I regret that I bought the prologue and read the others? Not for a second.

But then again, I'm a sucker for spoilers. I disconnect my internet whenever I get something like the next WoT book and I haven't finished it but other people have and are discussing it online. Otherwise I'd never make it through the book before finding out most of the ending.

It's one of the more logical theories I've heard about Szeth, though we really don't have enough information about him to say anything one way or another. Also, it's just cool sounding, which makes it right until proven wrong.....

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WOK Spoilers: Parshmen
« on: September 13, 2010, 01:25:47 AM »
I find the theory that the Parshmen/Parshendi are just other stages of Chasmfiends/Thunderclasts much more likely than the spren theory. Like Salkara said, they're just to substantial. Every spren we've seen so far, I've visualized as either a spirit type thing, or a very small plant, maybe like a mushroom. Which is kind of weird now that I think about it. But anyway, Syl is the only exception to this, and even she can't pick up more than a leaf. It would be rather difficult for the Parshendi to fight if they were Spren.

Also, if the Parshendi are bonded with Spren, why do we see no Surge/Void binding? You'd think that if they had the capability, they'd use it.

However, I also have my problems with the theory that Parshmen and/or Parshendi eventually become chasmfiends or thunderclasts. A lot of them. Like the fact that there are tons of parshmen and parshendi, and very few chasmfiends, and no thunderclasts. I even have a few reservations with chasmfiends becoming thunderclasts, though I think it is likely that they eventually do so. (My primary issue here is that when Dalinar sees thunderclasts in his visions, he doesn't associate them with chasmfiends, at all, though he apparently does associate the drawing of a thunderclast that Jasnah sends via the spanreeds with chasmfiends).

[/threadjacking]

With the parshmen, it just seems unlikely that they could be spren, and unlikely that they evolve in some way, or we'd see the evolution. Now the theory that they can be 'activated' somehow I can buy, though that opens a whole new can of worms.....

The Spren aren't individually associated with a given order (at least not yet). We know that Honorspren are capable of making a person a Radiant (or more specifically a windrunner) and that's about it. We also know that other spren are capable of making men Radiants, but not what kinds, or whether it matters what type of spren a person bonds with (could you become a Radiant by constantly being drunk, and thus attracting the spren that scholar discovered? Hmmmmm).

I find it highly unlikely that the Almighty's actual name is Elithanathile. Why? Because if you look, the Ardents have changed every last one of the Herald's names so that it's either a palindrome or closer to one than it was.

In the prelude, we have Kalak (which, admittedly, is already a palindrome), Jezrien, Talenel, and Ishar.

In the prologue, we have Kelek, Jerezereh, Talenelat, and Ishi. We also get a quick comment about a Herald named Shalash.

I realize this is from Szeth's point of view, and therefore could just be something from Shin culture, but Szeth specifically calls them the Ten Heralds from ancient Vorinism.

The Almighty's name could certainly be related to Elithanathile, but I don't think that it is that exactly.

I was also under the impression that Stormfather was reffering to Jezrien. I'll try to find the relevant quote.

I imagine the 17th shard is made up of people from several planets, as they can planet hop. It seems kind of counter-productive to have an organization that can planet hop, and then not take advantage of potential members from other planets.

While I think the conversation with Brandon about Galladon makes it more likely, I still think it's more likely that it's just a Dula. But I've been wrong before, and where Galladon likely won't be making any more major appearances on Sel, he could very feasibly become a member of the 17th shard.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Money

To all of the people who are telling me that they can't understand my hatred of libraries, in my defense, when I first brought it up I described it as irrational. I know that it doesn't make sense. I don't get it either.

I think that the concept of libraries is a good idea. I support libraries, and the spending of tax money on them. I have nothing against libraries in principle.

For whatever reason, one which is still unknown to me, however, I hate libraries. I don't like books from libraries (I'm talking about the actual physical book, here, not whether or not I like the story). They never have the books that I want, and if I reserve them, minimum waiting time is 2 to 3 months.

The one thing that I've noticed is that I really don't mind reading non-fiction stuff from libraries. In fact, I've gone into libraries and read these books for research. And as Liralyn  mentioned, the BYU library is quite awesome. This many books in one place is a wonderful thing. I have every intention of using the non-fiction stuff quite frequently.

I also will say, I really like the BYU library. I've been there to do homework several times now, and my productivity goes WAY up. There's tons of information available, and all sorts of other cool resources.  Perhaps it will be the library that finally overcomes my hatred of libraries.

Also a factor, I think, is the fact that I simply like owning books. It makes me happy that I own around 70 - 80 good books, all of which I would happily reread. And do. And I can just walk up to my shelf and pluck them off at any time.

Because of this, however, I tend to only read books that have been very highly recommended to me, or by authors whose other work I've enjoyed. Very rarely do I pick up something on a whim. Though it has happened once or twice.

It makes sense.

However, I think if Odium is doing that, then the world is pretty much screwed.
