Brandon Sanderson / Re: The Comprehensive Hemalurgy Thread
« on: June 14, 2008, 07:18:03 PM »
Ah ! I had some nice catching to do ! Fun ! But this time, I cannot add significantly to this thread. Only this quote :

Quote
The Inquisitor paused, and she was rewarded by what seemed to be a look of confusion on its twisted face. Then a hundred shadow images shot from his body.

Lord Ruler ! Vin thought. He had atium too.

So, Inquisitors can "use" atium and it seems available upon simple request. Somehow, I just can't imagine an Inquisitor saying to himself  "I will get my atium dose just in case I meet a silly mistborn that will want to fight me today"... Because, really, does atium have any other influence on an Inquisitor other than give him allomantic powers ? And atium being so rare to start with, would Mistborns (or a potential atium misting) really risk to fight an Inquisitor ? I doubt that very much.

Exactly ! So he was, in a way, saving the world but at a dear cost, wouldn't you say ? If that is what is happening, of course. We'll really know for sure only with MB3.

Your original quote, actually could point to the fact that he wasn't doing it totally by simple free will.

"How many more of you must I kill"

Doesn't "must" indicate an obligation of some sort ?

I agree with Comatose. In no way are we saying that TLR was a loving ruler. He was a tyrant and as such, you can forget about the loving part. What we are truly discussing is, as Marsh, as Vin's Mom, as Zane, was the Lord Ruler a victim of ruin ? Was it ruin who pushed him to kill ? Maybe he did not have Zane's strength to fight the urgency of the killing just like Vin's mom to kill her own daughter and choosing Vin as a princess. This is not the act of a loving mother but can I judge a woman's action if she is driven insane by an outer force ? Can we do the same with TLR ?

lol Lots of thoughts but I can't bring myself to write them all again here, and I am not the only one. You can read "Mysterious Reen" for one, and also the Comprehensive Hemalurgy thread for Marsh and Zane and Vin's mom which you forgot, by the way. Read the Hemalurgy thread first since it is the most informative and delirious (in a good way, of course).

Kwaan's original order was "get him lost and if you can't kill him - he must not reach the Well of Ascension".

We do not know if Kwaan did add something like "be the hero yourself, nephew and go get the power yourself" but he must have given some type of explanation to justify his asking. I mean to a killer, you don't have to justify yourself, but Rashek was his nephew, and no killer as far as we can read. But being family, they must have had some trust between the two. Obviously, Rashek thought he knew the prophecy. Was he wrong ? We do not know yet. But I guess, if my niece comes here and talks about a subject I know very well, I would not call it "justify" but I would gladly share my knowledge with her. So Rashek must have known a few things. I doubt though that he had the mission to take heroship on his shoulder.

The thing is, Reaves, I think that Brandon himself used the word repels. Can you get some quote from the book that would seem to mean what you are saying ? Otherwise we all get crazy here. If you need proof of this, read the rest of this very thread lol

Well, I believe, as you must imagine, that the Mist Spirit cannot be TLR's since it dit exist before TLR himself, before his killing of Alendi, before his ascension. If it was so, how would you explain that the Mist Spirit tries to kill Alendi's friend while Rashek is not yet in any type of power and obviously is quite alive ?

...

The most craziest idea pass by my head. Let's divide your idea Comatose. What would have happen if when the Lord Ruler took the power for himself... the power got in him ? Let's say, lacking words here, he swallowed or absorbed the Mist Spirit while Ruin was trapped by the Well ? He gets killed. Night comes. The Mist Spirit is freed again and mixes with the mists...

Need sleep lol

I agree - let's not forget that Brandon's annotation indicates that the mists are fundamental to the three magic systems. We're back in theory Land.  :D

As pointed before somewhere over the rainbow, the Mist Spirit could be lying. We cannot confirm if it is responsible. I believe, yes, that they were all skaa but we should be investigating about those that survived to start to grasp some truth.

In the meantime, I wanted to report that I made a mistake, I thought that we could see the mist swirls because it was mixing with ash. I was wrong. The mist is white. It is actually a very thick fog, so thick you get wet from it. It evaporates (now, see...) when the sun comes out. I was thinking why is it still staying a bit in the day ? Then I remember, it stated to kill in winter. Maybe it's a colder winter than usual. Why wouldn't they have weather problems if we do ?

Moreover, the mist existed before the Lord Ruler's days.  ;D I am so glad I find that one !

Quote from: Mistborn 1, chap. 7, p.122
The mists are your friend, Vin. They hide you, they protect you... and they give you power. Ministry doctrine - something rarely shared with skaa - claims that the Mistborn are descendants of the only men who remained true to the Lord Ruler during the days before his Ascension. Other legends whisper that we are something beyond even the Lord Ruler's power, something that was born on that day when the mists first came upon the land.

;D When reading Mistborn 1, we read this passage quite fast... or *looks to see if Brandon is around and then whispers* we're bored by the allomancy lesson and our mind sleep. In all cases, we now know that Kelsier had information that most people didn't have, even Sazed did not know about some of the legends that Kelsier knew. Therefore I would say with quite a bit of assurance that the Mist existed before TLR, that allomancy existed also, like feruchemy and I would not be surprised that hemalurgy was around as well. That would certainly explain "the piercing of the hero" Alendi had.

hum... points could be determined with metal... when you get a copper earring, a gold bracelet or an iron ring etc... the ability of the feruchemist could increase following this pattern.

;D Don't worry Ookla, I know how to just tease the surface without ruining everything. I've been teasing people all my life which is keeping on way longer than expected ! lol No Hobb spoilers ever ! Promise !  ;D

Sorry about that Swaindaddy. I guess we kinda change the subject...

The books does say that Inquisitors choose the best, the most promising... recruits. Would it be possible that if you make a certain quantity of points in a very limited time, that you would get the Inquisitor grade as bonus ?

Me ! Me ! Me ! Yes ! I just love Robin Hobb ! I love her heroes, I love the plots, so intricate, so marvelously insane !  I love puzzles too, and she puts pieces here and there for you to find ! You could find them, but my ! You do have to look for them ! Amber for instance... there was so many hints and yet, eventhough I think I could put my finger on something... whoups... it was gone ! Someone that doesn't read these trilogies is really missing a great piece of Fantasy Literature !

To me a single point of view, or a multiple point, does not influence my liking the story. If I can just skip into that world, if I can't just be there, it is good !

My ! Did my heart beat in front of those Others when they wanted to stop Fitz from leaving ? I have to stop thinking about it. I will have to reread them again.

I would be a liar if I would deny that Robin's commentary in front of Mistborn 1 did not comfort me before my reading of Mistborn. I confess I was a bit anxious after reading Elantris to read a trilogy of this Brandon Sanderson. How could someone who writes such a short book would do with a trilogy ? With AMoL ? Brandon won my trust way before I finished Mistborn I.
