Brandon Sanderson / Re: I'm confused with Adonalsium. Can anyone help me?
« on: September 28, 2010, 12:36:19 AM »
Brandon has said that they happen in the order he has them published.

A note however, the letter that revealed that Aona and Skai are dead is talking of past events, so we can't know for sure whether that was before or after Elantris.

I think if he was compelled that strongly, he wouldnt be able to deny anything asked of him by his owner, including suicide or giving up his shardblade, so I dont think his oathstone is anything but a symbol that he will obey
A truthless is commanded to do whatever his current master asks of him other than those two things.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WOK: Navani's Notebook Translation *MAJOR SPOILERS*

The person who translated these books into English treated certain art pages different ways in order to tailor it to the English-speaking audience. The Navani pages are meant to give a flavor for what the writing looks like, yet still be something readers can figure out and understand.
Cool, we can drop the theorising about different scripts then...

Brandon Sanderson / Re: WoK: The Heralds *Spoilers*
« on: September 24, 2010, 09:20:17 PM »
The drunk guy is actually Shalash, and he got rid of his statue using his Heraldic powers because he thought it would be a good practical joke.  He's not actually speaking in gibberish, just a language unknown to Szeth.
I guess the theory makes a lot of sense, but t seems kind of silly to me, why would a herald be around an Alethi peace treaty? one would think Hoid would recognize him.  The druk guy could be Dalinar, he said that when his brother was killed he was dead drunk

Long time lurker first time posting bla bla bla.

Can we even be certain Hoid is a herald and on a simular note, was he the wit back then? It is refered to in the book that he has been the wit for longer then most but I think he was training Sigzil at that point, thoughts?
I think we can be pretty certain that Hoid is not a herald...

I think what guy was getting at was that Hoid would likely recognise a Herald and would probably be there as Wit.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Is stormlight sentient?? (major spoilers)

"I will change. Give me what you have." I'm pretty sure the "what you have" is the stormlight as opposed to the stormlight being what she's talking to.

If she's talking to the stormlight what does she give it?

Brandon Sanderson / Re: How did you find out about Brandon Sanderson?

Unfortuanately we're unlikely to see the sequel to the way of kings untill 2012, because Brandon has pledged to write A memory of Light first...

It could have been speaking of Amaram selling Kaladin.

If this is Alethi script there is a question of why Shallan's notebooks had normal english writing unless it's meant to be two different styles of writing that they use.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Got to learn the Cosmere-Mistborn, Elantris or both
« on: September 24, 2010, 12:36:26 AM »
Whilst not interdependent, Mistborn and Elantris are both set within the Cosmere and both contain some hints about the bigger picture. In my opinion Mistborn's more fun, but Elantris is the one people are discussing more at the moment due to the possible appearance of Elantris Characters in tWoK.

I think it's likely the second Stormlight Archive book which he's not meant to start for 15 months....

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Shardplate and Surgebinding (**Spoilers**)
« on: September 23, 2010, 09:30:37 PM »
These things have been dscussed quite a bit, it's generally thought that there is some method to surgebinding in plate that Szeth doesn't know.

There are all sorts of theories about Szeth and a spren, some think he has one but we haven't seen it, some think he had one and has driven it away somehow, some think it's imprisoned possibly in his oathstone.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: The value of spheres in WoK (no spoilers)
« on: September 23, 2010, 09:27:16 PM »
so, what's the denomination chart?
Quote
Diamond marks, each worth five diamond chips. A single chip would buy a loaf of bread.
Quote
A sapphire sphere was worth about twenty-five times a diamond one. As Kaladin made one diamond mark a day, a skymark was worth as much as Kaladin made in half a month. Of course, a common darkeyed soldier earned five clearmarks a day, which would make this a week’s wages to them.
Those are some long months. 50 days.  Weeks are 5 days.
Quote
It was five diamond marks to a garnet.
Quote
An emerald broam was the largest denomination of sphere, worth a thousand diamond chips. Ten of them was more than her trip to Kharbranth had cost by several magnitudes!
Quote
Kaladin looked down at the sphere. An emerald chip. More than he normally earned in two weeks.
He would earn 10 clearmarks in 2 weeks (if you include his bribe to Gaz, 8, if you include income from selling knobweed sap, considerably more)
Quote
This single emerald broam was worth what a bridgeman slave would make in two hundred days.
If what were told earlier was true, shouldn't it be exactly what a bridgeman makes in 200 days?
Quote
There, she used all her remaining spheres to fill the oversized goblet lamp. To get enough light, she was forced to use spheres of all nine colors and all three sizes, so the illumination was patchy and varied.

Despite all the various denominations, How many have we seen used so far? And does that quote mean that only 9 and not 10 gems are used in money?

so, a chip is worth 1/5 of it's respective mark.  Is a broam worth 5x what a mark is?  That would put an emerald chip at 8 clearmarks... And it would put the 100 diamond broams at 2.5 emerald broams.  I can't decide if these sound right or not.  As far as the worth of an emerald broam: 1000 loaves of bread.
Hmm, where do you get the 8 from? I didn't follow where that appeared from.

From what I understood the "size" referred to the gem inside, not the sphere itself.
Can't think of a specific reference atm, but yes, it's stated that te spheres are all the same size glass spheres, but have different sized gems inside them depending on the denomination. (chip, mark or broam)

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Rights For Spren!!!! (minor spoilers)
« on: September 23, 2010, 10:29:59 AM »
I think it's very clear that spren hate strawberries. The first thing to do if we want to uphold the rights of spren everywhere is to eliminate all strawberries, especially those in a jam form.
I don't know ehere you get that one from. A rights for spren campaign would involve banning fabrials bassically...

Depends which size of emerald sphere. There are three sizes as far as I'm aware, chip, mark and broam.

But I'm afraid I can't think of much to help with assigning values... Noting that we effectively have 30 different coins (10 different types of gem and three different sizes) and we've only seen a few of them being spent on a few occasions.
