Brandon Sanderson / Re: Dragonsteel
« on: December 13, 2008, 07:40:46 PM »
Yeah, I loved Dragonsteel.  At that point, it was one of my favorite books ever.  (I don't know anymore, since I hadn't read any of Brandon's other books at that point.)  Dragonsteel is the whole reason I even know about Brandon--I remembered his name because I loved the book and from time to time looked to see if he had any books published.  When Elantris came out I was very excited.  I read it, made my roommates read it, and then they took Brandon's class, got to edit Mistborn 3 and are in his acknowledgments.  Oh life ain't always fair is it? ;)  (I had no time to take another "fun" class.)

What prompted you to check it out?  Did you know about Brandon before or did you just pick it up on a whim?  I wouldn't go searching in the Honor's Thesis section for reading material, but that's just me...  I've thought about taking his class, but I've heard it's hard to get into, and while I like writing, I don't think I'm up to anything epic and I don't have a lot of time to write. *sigh*

The cliffhanger was unexpected on my part.  I kept wondering when Jerick would go back to the city and resolve the issues he left behind, but it never happened, and then the city was demolished before he even seriously thought about going back.  I wanted to know what happened to all the characters that weren't explicitly mentioned.  And I really wanted to know how Jerick's new found realization about the death of his father would change his attitude.  I guess at this point I kind of imagine him going Strider/Aragorn on the world.  I also wanted to know what's *really* going on with the Sho Del.  They seem untrustworthy, but I just can't bring myself to believe that they're the real enemies.

I don't know if you can read it if you don't go to BYU or can't get someone to check it out for you.  And I don't know if BYU would do Interlibrary Loan with an Honor's Thesis, but who knows?  Maybe if Brandon has a draft saved somewhere and you asked nicely, he'd send you a copy, but I have no idea.

Brandon Sanderson / Dragonsteel **SPOILERS**
« on: December 06, 2008, 11:47:16 PM »
I went to Brandon's signing today and met him and Ookla.  I mentioned that I'd read Dragonsteel, and Ookla suggested that I come post a forum topic about it.  For those of you that don't know, Dragonsteel is Brandon's undergraduate Honor's thesis.  It just so happens that BYU has a copy of it at the library, so being a good Sanderson fan, I checked it out and settled in for a good read.

Has anyone else been able to get their hands on it?  If you have, what did you think of it?  I rather enjoyed it, even if it's one of Brandon's earlier pieces of writing and unpolished.  It has the characteristic unique magic system, and I can't help but wonder if it was influenced by Brandon's early undergraduate days as a biochemistry major (because I'm a biochemistry major).  I also see some parallels between Dragonsteel characters and characters that have shown up in other books.  I think Jerick and Elend are quite alike, as are Topaz and Kelsier.  I'll have to check it out again and figure find Hoid references for you theorists out there.

The downside to the book is the ending is killer.  I started reading thinking it was a stand-alone novel--not so!  The ending has one of the biggest cliffhangers I've seen anywhere.  The worst part about that is that when I talked to Brandon today he said he probably wouldn't finish the series. :'(

At any rate, I'd love to discuss it with everyone that has read it, or even those that haven't.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Best Mistborn Fight Scene *SPOILERS*
« on: December 06, 2008, 11:21:09 PM »
I have to go with Mist-wielding Vin.  When I got to that point in the book, I started saying (out loud, to myself, in my room), "No way, she's going to fight all those Inquisitors?!  No way!" and got even more excited because I realized that the HoA cover art wasn't a spoiler for book 1, like I originally thought, but for book 3!  It was epic.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: HOA book of the year?
« on: December 06, 2008, 11:14:45 PM »
I'd go as far as to say it deserves "Fantasy Book of the Year."  The problem with fantasy books is the majority of the general populace would prefer to read about fads, like crash dieting and Breaking Dawn, if they read at all.  That's why it's our job to convert the general populace, yes?

If you're looking for something good to read and you don't mind reading it on the computer, I say go for it.  What better way to spend the Christmas break? ;)   The revisions don't really change the main storyline anyway.  Then go buy it when it comes out and enjoy it all over again!

@ GreenMonsta -- No, you can't get them from his website.  I made it using my meager Photoshop skills.  It's just an iron-on.  I'll have to take a picture and show the back too, because it says "Mistborn" on the back just like it appears on the cover of book 1.

@ Chaos -- Yeah, that's from the release party.  That's the advantage of going to college where Brandon went to college--he's around all the time. :)

@ Pygmalion -- Yeah, I did.  It was fun.  And an Allomantic table shirt would be wicked-cool.

The other idea I had for the shirt was to put, "Do you always read at balls?" on the front, then on the back have a picture of me in a prom dress w/ the Mistborn books and "Whenever I can get away with it."  That will forever be one of my favorites quotes from the series.

I can't say enough good things about this book. There really isn't a word that adequately describes how wonderful, spectacular, and amazing this book is. It answers all the promised questions, and takes you on a crazy philosophical and emotional rollercoaster.  There were several times that I made verbal exclamations as I was reading the book--that was how physically and mentally I was into the story.  I was in no way disappointed, even though I was sad about Vin and Elend.  I understand that it just needed to happen that way.  But it adds to the emotional poignancy of the book.

This isn't really specific to HoA, but I'd love to see some kind of pronunciation guide for Mistborn terms and names.  The first time I met Brandon, I was terrified I was going to slaughter pronunciation.  For instance, is atium pronounced with a long "a" or a short "a"?

I had some interesting and enlightening discussions about Mistborn and reading in general with both Qarlin and Nessa as we waited in line for almost 3 hours.  I had no idea this signing would be so popular!  But it was totally worth it, and I'm glad there are people out there who are just as nerdy as me when it comes to Mistborn.  Also, note my awesome shirt, if you can read it.

Brandon Sanderson / Re: Ruin and Preservation
« on: March 06, 2008, 06:08:55 AM »
I agree, there's definitely a light/dark and good/evil duality going on. But, like Miriel mentioned, the Lord Ruler is a force of Preservation to the extreme, so much that it stagnates the world. And technically, the Lord Ruler is evil, too, because of all his atrocities. That means even the paragon of Preservation, the Lord Ruler, can be evil.

Therefore, it can be reasonably presumed that good/evil is independent of Ruin and Preservation. Ruin/Preservation are forces, not ideals.

So rather than "good" completely winning out, there will have to be a balance struck at the end of MB3, to prevent another Lord Ruler from existing. Plus, doing something like that seems like the typical, cliche-breaking thing Brandon would do.

I wouldn't say the Lord Ruler is evil, per say.  Sure, that's the way he seemed, due to the extreme oppression of the skaa and whatnot, but if it's true that the thing in the well is as horrible as we currently believe, and he was keeping said thing at bay, he was doing everyone a big favor.  It seemed that it was a big burden on him, too.  I think that either Vin and company will have to find a way to re-seal the well spirit and keep it contained the way the Lord Ruler was doing, or perhaps eradicate it entirely.

I would, however, agree that Ruin and Preservation are independent of good and evil.  Good and evil are arbitrary terms.

I figured out what I was doing wrong on a brutally difficult physics problem!  Note to other readers: never take physics unless you HAVE to do so.

A question about Vasher.
How can Vasher use all his breath and become a drab? Doesn't using all their breath extinguish their life?

We know that Vasher has more information and experience with how to use Breath than pretty much anyone else currently living.  Vasher has some way of Returning and un-Returning himself.  My guess would be that as long as he's in un-Returned form, he can use up Breath just like anyone else, even to the point of becoming a drab.

Also overused would be prophet, but it's ironic in a way. You have to spend your profit to be a prophet.

Edit: Breeze would say something like "Never gamble with a prophet, because that's just what they'll do."

Haha, that was a classic play on words.  Thanks for making my day!

... wow, that was enlightening... especially how my mind managed to blank out the part of "Kelsier is Blonde."
Tarnation. I forsee there will be some rereading I need to do in the near future.  @_0

You're not the only one.  I had in my head that Kelsier had brown hair up until I re-read it.  But it's right there, page 49 in the PB version, right when Kelsier saves Vin from Camon's beating.

Huh, that's a good idea.

Can I suggest maybe that you might want to consider starting a thread in conjunction with the fanart thread of physical descriptions/references to what characters look like? it seems like lots of people here do fanart so it might benefit you guys to lump together...

I'm not sure if I should start a whole new thread for this, so I'll just post descriptions here for now.  They're straight from MB1.

Kelsier - tall, hawk-faced, light blond hair, mid-thirties, nobleman's suit (colored vest, dark coat and trousers, thin cloak to keep off ash)

Dockson - shorter than Kelsier, squarish face, stocky build, black hair, short half-beard, nobleman's suit

Breeze - sharply dressed as a nobleman, hat and dueling cane, older, a pit portly, well-styled black hair

Ham - build of a soldier, sleeveless shirt, well sculpted arms, muscular but not massive, close-cropped hair

Clubs - Dull tan overcoat, pair of brown trousers, simple white shirt, face knotted and gnarled, eyes show with disapproving satisfaction

Yeden - short with curly brown hair, gray skaa clothes, worker's coat

That's what I have so far.  Feel free to add and improve the list!
