Title: Im pissed about stormlight archive.
Post by: MrJon3s on April 10, 2011, 09:54:28 AM
So I borrowed The Way of Kings from my friend because I liked the mistborn trilogy. So I started reading this figureing it was gonna be a trilogy or so. Well I finished the book and go online to see when the next one comes out and find out that its also a 10 part series and the other books not coming out for a while. So if Brandon doesn't pull a rothfuss or martin I have to wait 10-15 years to finish this series.

I loved How he sets up the series.

well,  for what it's worth, Brandon's been pretty consistent about publishing at least one book a year, so he's probably not going to pull a Martin.

If you haven't read Warbreaker and Elantris yet, I recommend reading those for more Brandon, Warbreaker is even  available for free online, also a stand-alone Mistborn novel is coming out in November.

Also, might I recommend joining the 17th Shard forums in order to discuss Brandon's books with an active group of fans? You'd want to stay out of the general theories section til you've read everything though as its a bit spoilerific.

I'd estimate at least 10-15 to finish the series.  Didn't Brandon say that he plans to do 2~ books in between each Stormlight book?  Like another Mistborn trilogy, sequels to Elantris and Warbreaker, and even new worlds.  I don't remember where I read it, but I'll look around to see if I can find a reference to 2~ books between each Stormlight one.

I though he said that he was going to do 2 stormlight books every 3 years. (After WoT is done) I am not 100% on that, but I thought I read that somewhere. Anyways, I am more than pleased with his pace of releasing books.

Two Stormlights every three years, yes. Basically Stormlight, Stormlight, side project, rinse & repeat. A book every year. Of course, we have a little over another year to see the end of the Wheel of Time, which is the current project at hand.

Look, don't be pissed. Just don't read it then.

Brandon is very upfront about the fact that it will be 10 books. Remember that Sonf of Ice and Fire started out as a trilogy. Now it's supposed to be 7 books. And Martin is taking ever longer for each one. That's a reason to say you're a little upset. As for the Stormlight Archive, why don't we just say we all loved the first one and can hardly wait to read the next as soon as possible?  ::)

The time between Stormlight books will give us plenty of opportunity to memorize and theorize.

Yes! This will be the first series that I began the day it was released (being a younger person), and I'm excited to see it all the way through.  Wheel of Time is bad enough, and I only started that after the 10th book was released.

Same here. I've taken it as something of a personal obligation to become an obsessive mega-fan. X3

Not me! I started  the 1990's by getting floored by The Eye of the World, 21 years later we await the final book in what is my favorite series of all time.  I was 19 years old when I  began that journey, and its been a journey that I have truly been thankful for. All the years of speculation, and in-depth conversations with my dear fiends are cherished memories and fondly remembered  times. Sure I may have grumbled a few times in my 20's and early 30's, but looking back I truly have no grumbles, other than Mr Jordan had to leave us.  My other 40 something friends, that I turned onto the WOT years ago, and I were actually looking  at the conclusion of the WOT with a twinge of melancholia, that was until I read The Way of Kings, and I Knew, I had found the series to escort me to my 60's, and its a journey I can't wait to enjoy.

Sometimes I wish my favorite book series were more like my favorite TV series, so I would always know when the next installment would be coming out.

But then I remember how some series get cancelled right when something really cool is happening (Firefly, The 4400, The Agency).  And I am glad that publishers are less likely to do this than producers.

Then I remember how some series take a wrong turn (Heroes, season 2), or run out of steam (Burn Notice), or have really disappointing endings (BSG).  And I am glad that authors can take more time to figure things out than screenwriters.

So I'm in no hurry.  :)

Ugh, don't talk about the 4400 cancellation.  I was so mad about that for weeks.

Yeah, I'm excited for the Stormlight Archive to be my "decade long" journey, much like WoT has been for so many people.

I am excited about Stormlight being 10 books!   I started with both Wheel of Time, Song of Fire and Ice, and many more with the first releases so it has been a long road,  with so many series finally coming to an end I am glad there is another that will be my friend for years to come.

Hear, hear. :) I couldn't get into the Wheel of Time, probably because I started it too late, but I just can't wait to be swept up by this new series and see what it has in store for us. I look forward and imagine what the next ten years are going to be like, what the story's going to reveal, and what kind of changes in my life the Stormlight Archive is going to see me through, and I can't feel anything but excitement.

I'm glad that we know the length of the series already.  There are some series like Feehan's Carpathians and Sands' Argeneau series that have gone on way too long.

Lengths in a series are subject to change. As Brandon works out the story, lots of things he has outlined may change.

Your probably looking at 15-20 years for it to be finished. Since Brandon wants to write other things. He is not a 1 series author.

I believe this is what you were looking for his blog post titled: "Another Long and Rambling Post on Future Books (http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog/925/Another-Long-and-Rambling-Post-on-Future-Books)"

Yes, but unlike most (read: nearly all) other fantasy series, THE WAY OF KINGS had that apparently elusive component:

AN ENDING. And a satisfying one.

Having read books 1-13 of the Wheel of Time and book 1 of the Stormlight Archive, it is hard to imagine the end of the Wheel of Time being quite as satisfying and surprising as JUST the end WAY OF KINGS.

Just like the Mistborn series; each novel stands apart from the others. You didn't get to the end of book one and think "OH NO! I HAVE TO READ TWO MORE BOOKS!"

Nope, you just read and enjoyed the ending.

I honestly held out to read the book a bit because of this reason. I think so many fans are tired of epic series that don't get finished or don't have more material within a reasonable time. It's also been sad seeing fans that were HUGE parts of the community that passed away before seeing the end.

There were a lot of negative reviews about the length of this novel. I just finished it two days ago, and absolutely loved every bit of the story. I can't say there was anything shocking to me when there were the revelations. It seems pretty obvious, but this is a ground work novel.

Speak for yourself.  I was definitely glad I got the boxed set, and I immediately switched to the next book both times. Although in my case it was more "OH YEAH! I GET TO READ TWO MORE BOOKS!"
 ;)

In the case of Mistborn, I was very satisfied with the ending to TFE, although I knew perfectly well that there was more stuff to come.

When I finished TWoA, I was tired after a long night of reading, and was more than a little depressed about the cliff-hanger ending.  On re-read, though, I liked it much more.

HoA?  Amazing.  A deeply satisfying ending, even while sad.
