Title: Vote for Vin!
Post by: Chaos on March 08, 2011, 05:29:17 AM
Do you remember last year, when Suvudu.com held their Science Fiction/Fantasy cage match? You know, the one Rand al'Thor won? Well, the 2011 cage match starts right now. Guess who's on the bracket? Our dear friend, Vin.

Vin's first opponent is from Logen Ninefingers, from the First Law Trilogy. But come on. Vin + atium? Yeah, I think she beats a barbarian, even atium-less. You should go vote for her. (http://sf-fantasy.suvudu.com/2011/03/cage-match-2011-vin-versus-logen-ninefingers.html) Have multiple computers? Maybe a cell phone with internet capabilities? Go vote for her again. This match ends on Thursday!

Her opponent after Logen will be either Jacob Black or Eric Northman. I'm kind of hoping Jacob wins that one, so we can see Vin utterly destroy the werewolf. But seriously guys, this one is Vin's hardest match-up for a while. Vote vote vote! Don't let Vin's lead deceive you; First Law is really popular.

You can see the entire bracket here: http://suvudu.com/2011/03/your-2011-cage-match-contenders-video.html

Done!  The write up "prediction" was pretty cool, despite the fact that Vin could have just destroyed him at the start.  Just seemed like they were giving Logen a chance even though he never had one :P

I see a Snape v. Lestat fight happening sometime soon...... That would truly be an amazing fight to see.

GOD ???
Who to pick? Vin, the totally awesome Mistborn who would obviously win in real life, or the bad-ass Logen

Long Live Barbarians! Go Logen!  :P

Long Live Barbarians! Go Logen!  :P

Psh. Logen has no proper weapons to fight Vin, especially not if she has atium.

There's no doubt he'd lose, after all he is at his best when beat to a bloody pupl first and I'm pretty sure Vin would just finish him before he had time to go all berserker on her. But I still like Logen better than Vin.

Logen is on a level comparable to a koloss when facing Vin. Despite his greater skill, all he really has is fighting abilities and no magic. I think Vin is the clear winner here.

But I definitely see some interesting fights in New Crobuzon and Ankh-Morpork divisions. Raymond Feist's Pug vs. David Gemmel's Druss the Legend? While Pug is probably the most powerful magician of his world, Druss has been known to kill sorcerers - as well as pretty much everything else.

And just below those two fellas, I see Quick Ben vs. Solomon Kane. I am anticipating this.

On a related note, Suvudu is an awesome place to look for new books to read :)

About last year's competition.. I'm trying to think of people in any book that could possibly beat Rand al'Thor in this "duel to the death".  Really can't come up with a single person who would even be close, who did he fight for the championship?  Was it close?

He fought Jaime Lannister, from A Song of Ice and Fire. It was pretty close. Lots of fans on both sides who wanted to win.

Bah, Jaime Lannister  doesn't have any special abilities does he? He'd get used as a mop.

Stupid.

Pug could take Rand in like a second. (Thanks Argent, I completely forgot about Pug. I haven't read Feist in about six years. Brings back memories)

Under Rands abilities it said "Can take in enough One Power to end all life.".
GREGOR Cleganes said something to the point of "Monstrously large."

Yeah, I really can't see Rand al'Thor ever losing to everyone.  I know I might be biased because I love WoT, but come on...  Even without a sa'angreal he should be able to instantly kill anything short of a God (we will have to find out how he stands up to a godlike figure after AMoL comes out :D).  Vin is great and all, and there are many characters I like more than Vin and Rand, but no one would stand a chance in shear power.

I'd really love to know what who Brandon thinks would win with a Hoid/Rand fight.  He's hinted that Hoid has tremendous power...

I think if he told us, it would reveal too much about Hoid at this point in the Cosmere. :)

I agree.  As much as I would love to see Hoid, Kaladin, and/or Dalinar in the cage match I don't think we'll see them until their full abilities have been revealed in the books.  But when we do, I suspect that Rand will be one of the few people that will have a chance at beating them.  I hope by then they have vid sims for the fights.  That will definitely be a fight worth seeing.

I definitely want to see Kaladin in one of these  cage match things at some point. Maybe in 2013 after Book 2 comes out.
And vid sims would be way awesome.

Kaladin would give anyone an epic fight. Ooh, and now I'm imagining a Kaladin vs. Vin matchup...

Vin would still win, if she had atium.

Honestly, Vin could  beat just about anybody if she had  atium. Yo have to deny her atium i you want most fights to be interesting.

Fortunately I don't think that's usually a problem, given how rare it is. You'd have to set the fights at a pretty narrow window in her character arc if you wanted her to have ready access to atium.

And we could throw Vasher and Hrathen in there too... :) Hrathen mostly because he seems more used to combat situations than Raoden, but Raoden would be awesome too. AonDor versus Allomancy versus Surgebinding versus Awakening, anyone?

Sorry for posting twice in a row, btw... ^^;

Yay!  Vin won her first match!  I have no doubt that she'll kick Eric's pale behind, but I'm worried about the match after that since she may have to go against Zedd.  That'll be interesting.

Rand vs. Skywalker?

Here's my question:  If we have Kaladin vs. Vin, is there going to be some sort of weird interaction between their powers?  If the Cosmere is all one complex magic system, there might be more going on than just a beatdown.

Now there's an interesting question. :) Maybe it's one we'll get answered someday, as more of the overplot starts to be revealed... I personally would love to start seeing some more overt interaction between the various shardworlds.

So now we've got Vin vs. Zedd from The Sword of Truth.

My initial thoughts on seeing that lineup were similar to Brandon's take on it, (http://brandonsanderson.com/blog/972/Suvudu-Cage-Match-Vin-vs.-Zeddicus-Zul-Zorander) but he says it so much better than I could...

It looks like the semi-finals will be a true clash of the titans. We'll probably have Vin vs. Jon Snow on one side, Quick Ben vs. Perrin on the other. And I admit, I don't want a single one of those characters to lose, they all represent giants in the fantasy industry.

after reading Brandon's story about Min and the guy from Terry Goodkinds books, I think Suvudu should do a fantasy author death match.

This will let brandon take out all his rage on Terry Goodkind and put an end to him.

Terry Goodkind would be mad.....he doesn't write fantasy, he writes  books with meaning, because ya know, fantasy is meaningless escapism that never explores important human themes.

Brandon's writeup was so awesome. The only Goodkind jibe it's missing is something about "not fantasy"!

Pity I only know Sword of Truth by reputation.  On the other hand, I have read Atlas Shrugged, so yeah, I follow.

Actually, the first 2-3 books are not that bad.
Title: Re: Vote for Vin!

Bejay: Go back and re-read Richard's brother's "fire is bad" speech at the very start of the first book.  Keep in mind that in pre-electrical societies, (especially ones with no magic,) the controlled use of fire is synonymous with civilization itself.  But people were listening and agreeing instead of denouncing him a an obvious nutcase.

There were a few entertaining bits in the first few books, but on the whole the series is rotten through and through, from the beginning to the end.

To be honest though... Although I much prefer anything from Sanderson vs Goodkin, I did enjoy SoT, and although Mistborn was much better... I don't think Vin could have actually beat Zedd. But... it's a fan based competition, so... go Vin! :)

I liked Wizard's first rule. It's heavy on the philosophy so it's not a fast read, but still really good.  I actually put it in the same catagory as Ender's Game.  Both are really good, but enough was resolved in the first book that I didn't feel a need to read the rest of the series.

Yeah, but at least the rest of the Ender's series was decent, if not anywhere close to as good as the first one.  I really enjoyed the Bean sequels, Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, and Shadow Puppets.  The ones that followed Ender's line were... kind of boring :/

The only ones I read were Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow.  I tried to read the next one in the Ender's line, but I couldn't do it.  It was much too boring.
