Title: Mist Spirit *Mistborn Spoilers*
Post by: Stormblessed on October 13, 2010, 11:31:53 AM
In one of the epigraphs from Mistborn: Final Empire there is the quote:

Quote
Like it's [the mist spirit] made out of black fog. Or mist, perhaps

I'm sort of confused.  ???
I thought Preservations mists were white, and that this mist spirit that Alendi sees is a shadow of Preservation. But if the mist was black, then that would make the mist spirit Ruin. Any ideas?

Maybe they just meant the fog was unusually thick.  That's my guess.

I thought that maybe it's because of how he is weakening. Ruin's slowly taking control, maybe?

Preservation probably lost a lot of substance during the thousand years after the ascension.

The excerpt I am referring to occurs prior to the ascension.

EXACTLY. :)
This is why the spirit that was seen by the chosen one was more dense and therefore darker than the one seen by Vin.
Unnamed hero goes on his quest-->Hero sees the spirit of presevation-->Rashek becomes the lord ruler-->1000 years pass during which Preservation loses more and more power-->Vin sees a diminished, and therefore much lighter mist-spirit.

It is also possible that this change was one made by Ruin.

Just read the same passage which comes latter in the WoA (the other passage is onpg 174, this is on pg 353) and it calls it the "dark fog" instead of the "black fog".

However, I can't be sure if this is just a mistake on Brandon's part, or a subtle manipulation made by Ruin.  ???

Well since all of the epigraphs in WoA got altered by Ruin, I'd say it's likely a subtle manipulation, though I don't know what purpose that serves. I have a document that compares the real version with the version Ruin created, and there are other changes that are WAY more significant. This doesn't really seem that important.

So following that logic, it might also be a typo. But given the amount of copy/pasting that I'm assuming went on with these epigraphs, that also doesn't really make much sense.

Which was exactly the same thing I was thinking.
