Title: Shardplate running without gems (WoK spoilers)
Post by: Stormblessed on September 27, 2010, 02:43:50 AM
We know that in old days, surgebinders could wear shardplates.

We know that nowadays shardplates interfere with surgebinding.

I think the glyphs on the shardplates is what allows surgebinders to use the shardplates, but I was also wondering if the shardplates can run without gems if they have the glyphs on them. Because if a surgebinder is continuously absorbing stormlight, wouldn't he then use all the stormlight from the gems that run his shardplate? That would mean that they would need to find another way to power the shardplate without stormlight infused gems.

The glyphs might be like an alternate source of power for shardplates.

I know Szeth won't wear Plate, but was because it interfered with Surgebinding? I don't recall there being a stated reason, just that he wouldn't wear it.

His very first PoV scene in the prologue includes a mental comment that Shardplate interferes with his Surgebinding, so he had to choose one or the other.

His very first PoV scene in the prologue includes a mental comment that Shardplate interferes with his Surgebinding, so he had to choose one or the other.

In addition, he cannot create a binding to a shardplate. That is why he binded the furniture to a point behind Gavilar, not to Gavilar directly.
