The version of Les Miserables I read was a memorable 1492 pages. Not sure that's the longest I've read, but possibly.

The Count of Monte Cristo (around 1600-ish pages?)  It moves along at a good clip, but it was too large to comfortably read in bed.  This is one of things that makes me want an ereader.

For novels it was probably The First Man in Rome by Colleen McCullough. I believe it was 1,200 pages. Longer doesn't mean better.

Was TCoMC really that long?  I guess that would make it the longest book I've read as well.

Dude, the unabridged version is huge. Did you not notice it when you read it, and how could you not? Or did you e-book it or something? :P

Abridged versions are common.  They completely excise several sub-plots.

Which is lame, considering how intricate all the subplots are. It all flows together very well in an extremely well woven tapestry of a story.

We read it for book club (at church) a couple of years ago.  A few of us got the full version and some got the abridged version.  It made for some confusing discussion.  One girl showed up with the Cliffs Notes, and when I looked at it I realized that it was the Cliffs Notes of the abridged version.

Does the Great Book of Amber count? It's around 1300 or 1400 pages but it's 10 books crammed into one, chapters start on the same page as the last one to make it fit.

It's a single book, so i'd say yeah. Basically an anthology. Afterall, it's "longest book" not "longest single individual novel"

ROFL!!!

That's just hilarious.  I so need to read this one.  Got a free e-book copy from Barnes&Noble a while ago.  I absolutely loved the Caviezel-version of the movie.

Hah! That sounds like a fun time.

Yeah, I need to read it too. It's on the list.

Macworld Mac Secrets (http://www.amazon.com/Macworld-Mac-Secrets-David-Pogue/dp/0764534157) - 1300 large pages. I read this in the mid-90's while I waited for my computer to do things, like copy files, download stuff over a modem, or render 3D scenes. Modern computers rarely make us wait for anything, so I could never do something like that today.

Other  than that, here are a few long fictions I've read: The Shadow Rising (393 Kwords) and Lord of Chaos (389) from the Wheel of Time, The Way of Kings (387 Kwords?).

New American Standard longest by far, I've read it atleast 3 or 4 times in totality but certain sections (the Gospels etc.) up to 20 times. I haven't touched it in 5 years but we'll not get into that.

I feel very stereotypical, but the longest novel I've read is also The Way of Kings ( which clocks in at 1008 pages).

I believe that both the Count of Monte Crisco and Les Miserables were serial novels, which accounts in large part to their length. Serial novels, a lot like Japanese manga, is about telling the story while trying to make it last as long as possible while the story is still alive. That led to the length of many of the novels from that era.

Oh, and I've read the unabridged of both.  ;D

Going off of paperback edition page counts on Amazon: Probably the expanded / complete and uncut re-release of The Stand (Stephen King) at 1141 pages.

Also:

I believe that both the Count of Monte Crisco and Les Miserables

Freud got your tongue?    ;D

If he did Cinnamon Buns would've come out instead of 'Crisco'.  ;)

(another bump)

I think if there's ever a lull in Brandon and Pat Rothfuss's career they should do a collaborative book and see just how long it ends up.

Does the Tamuli count as one book? It's one continuous story with no breaks (I think). My copy came in at around 1600-1700 pages.
