Title: How did the Lord Ruler survive a beheading?
Post by: scole on August 08, 2010, 05:14:16 AM
I kept expecting to find the answer to this, but I can't figure it out. How could the Lord Ruler survive having his head cut off? It mentions this a couple times in the book, does anyone have an answer?

His head wasn't completely cut off, and he was burning his goldmind (getting extreme bursts of stored health), so he was able to heal from it.

Many of those things he survived from were exaggerations.

Though, couldn't he technically heal a cut right behind a blade if he used enough gold? His head would never separate from his body, but he would have survived a sword passing all the way through his neck.

Ooh, that's a valid point. That very well could be the case, where he was never totally beheaded, but it sure looked like it. A cool way to conceptualize that particular scene, for certain.

Though it wouldn't look so much like it cut his head off as the blade went right through him.  So the rumor would've probably been different if this was the case.

I don't know. If I saw someone survive a sword cutting through their entire neck, I'd say that they survived beheading, even if they technically never lost their head. There would likely be blood anyway (depending on just how quickly he healed), so it might look at first glance that the blow was clean enough that it didn't even shift the position of the head on the neck while still having done the job. I can just imagine TLR getting up after that, with a ring of still wet blood around his neck. Creepy and awesome.

I actually asked Brandon about this one time specifically and he told me that the Lord Ruler was lying. Brandon said he could survive being beheaded.

He then told me that we might see some people in Way of Kings that could though!

I'm assuming that there is a typo there and it should say:
"Brandon said he could not survive being beheaded."

i always pictured him as Burning both Pewter and G0ld, and taking an Axe to the neck.

basically, hes fighting some small army somewhere, and a lucky axeman swings, and hits him right in the side of the next, shearing through most of the muscle, but stopping on his pewter-enhanced Spine.  The LR then jerks the Axe out of his hands, yanks it out of his Next, while Flaring his Goldmind to quickly heal, and then proceeds to Slaughter the rest of the squad.   a few Hundred years of PR and Spin later, and presto.

Healing a sword passing through your neck would be noticeably messier than it just passing right through. ;)
