Title: Alcatraz 3 *spoilers* (maybe)
Post by: Plasman on September 29, 2009, 05:23:32 AM
great book! very funny and clever, as always.  best line had to be when alcatraz commented on there being towers on every building and "seizing the throne".  Folsom's Talent was awesome. i can totally seem him surrounded by a whole bunch of Librarians, then putting on headphones and just taking them all out. so cool.  i'll be interested to see where the whole Lybrarian thing goes.  any guesses on who Alcatraz supposedly murders? my guess is Attica.

And is it weird that i was able to read the whole "frustrating part" in chapter 14 without any trouble at all?

*** Note: This post is chock full of spoilers. If you do not desire spoilers, do not read this post. ***

No. I read it perfectly too. My little sister really struggled with it, though, and I had to translate it for her. So I guess if it's weird, then I'm weird too.

I loved the book, as always. I don't know that I can choose a best line. I'm already trying to figure out if it's possible to work the line about "If the knights cut you off from their rock, you get exiled from their giant glass mushroom" into a conversation at all, let alone without looking like an idiot.

Who Alcatraz murders? Attica makes sense. After all, Attica is supposedly trying to give everyone Smedry Talents, which Alcatraz knows from the tomb is not a good idea. My guess would be that Alcatraz tries to stop him from whatever he's doing, and in so doing accidentally kills Attica.

My favorite part of the book was when Alcatraz marries Folsom to Himalaya, and she starts kicking the crap out of the Librarians. That was the one part of the book that I couldn't figure out before it actually happened, and was all the more awesome for it.

*** End Spoilers ***

For those of you avoiding spoilers, the book is great, go read it.

**spoilers as well**

The book was amzing, as usual. I though had trouble reading chapter 14. One of my favorite parts had to be when Al and his mother see each other. Also when he see's her lying about him, that I thought was cool. The one problem I have is I can't imagine Shasta acting as she is to write the letter that she left at the end of book 2. Even worse I can't imagine Attica wrting the note he left on the packege in book 1. He acted through out the book like he didn't care what was going on with the war..that bugged me.

Another awesome entry in the Alcatraz series.   :)

I think my favorite bit had to be the joke:

"Why did the librarian slip and fall down?

Because she was looking through the library's nonfriction section."

Don't know why, but that bit cracked me up for a good 20 minutes.  ;D

i don't know about 20 minutes, but i agree, that was a good line :)

And why is that? Do you not have an amazon account?

I believe that Amazon doesn't let u write a review unless u have purchased at least one book from them

I'll post a review when I get a chance. 'Twill be my first Amazon review.

It's funny. Brandon wrote Book 4 as a break from the WoT, and I read book 3 as a break from my WoT reread. (Ok, it wasn't *that* funny. I mean, I laughed. A little.)

This book took much longer to gain steam than the others (keeping in mind of course how very short they all are). After the explosion, things slowed way the heck down and didn't pick up again until the very end. The climax was far more satisfying, though. The line "I was a Smedry" had me laughing with glee as I realized what he was about to do.

For a while I thought Grandpa Smedry would turn out to be evil. I really didn't want him to, and I'm glad he didn't. He's my favorite character, by far. I mean, he's two parts Dr. Emmit Brown and one part Dumbledore, for crying out loud. I had Sir Leno pegged from his second appearance, though.

I don't really have a favorite line, but one of my favorite things was the Silimatic pig and all of the jokes it created. So classic.

Lastly, will there really be a book 5, or was that just Alcatraz being a tease?

that's what i want to know too.  i think brandon is contracted for four, and a fifth book is a possibility if scholastic thinks its a good idea. so we need to do what Alcatraz says and buy his books!

I was actually thinking the other day that it's entirely possible that we'll never actually see the scene where Alcatraz is tied to an altar (supposedly in book 5). I mean, I can totally see him at the end of the series being like, "Yeah, remember that line I started book 1 with? Yeah, that never actually happened." Or even having it happen in a chapter break or something like that. It would fit Alcatraz's sense of humor so far.

It would also have a bunch of unhappy readers, though.

I suppose I'm a little late in the game here, but I just had the opportunity to read it yesterday. I wish there was more... it only took me a few hours to read, and I do love Alcatraz. There were so many great lines... She Who Cannot Be Named (Swcbn.... bahaha)... the bathroom humor trifecta... crapaflapnasti...

I loved Folsom and Himalaya, especially the scene where Himalaya is sorting the books.

And did we ever clear up the idea of whether or not there would be a fifth book? I was always under the impression there would be...

The information on the fifth book is that it's going to be written up and sent into Scolastic, because they have first rights refusal.  If they refuse it, the plan (at least, last I spoke to him, and it was a "i'd rather" more then a "I will") was to wait for the contract with scolastic to run out and sell it to another publisher when they can also publish the other four books.

Also, do you think "she who can not be named" is a play off of voldi?  I didn't catch that before. . . *looks thoughtful*

I'd always assumed it was a direct Voldemort reference.

Of course it is.

Scholastic's right of first refusal can be satisfied with a book proposal. It doesn't have to be a whole book.

And as popular as the series has been I would bet they will pick up the 5th book.  They have already invested in 4, one more is nothing (in the whole scheme of things, I realize it is a HUGE investment, but they will make it back).

I actually hope they don't pick up the book. It seems to me that they haven't promoted him very well. I think that Tor (or someone else) would gladly pick up a book written by the guy who finished the WoT series, even if it is a YA.

I also love Alcatraz. I have many short friends, and I enjoyed telling them some of the many reasons why it was better to be short. After all, Short people don't need as much material for clothes as tall people so, making clothes much more efficient.  ;)

I agree... Scholastic doesn't seem very big on promoting it.... And it took stores in my areas forever to order in copies, even after I had requested that they do so....

Which is a total bummer, because I, too, have many short friends who would benefit from learning Kaz's rules.... short people make smaller targets.  ;D

I know! One of my friends cracked up when I explained that tall people caused the recession. After all, Short people require shorter buildings, shorter clothes, less transportation, less water and less food. Imagine how much money that could add up to if everyone was short!

I think it will be Grandpa Smedry unfortunately. (I forgot his first name!) When you compare Alcatraz's relationships to his grandpa and his dad in book 3, Alcatraz is much less close to his dad. Killing Grandpa Smedry would hurt Alcatraz so much more and would certainly explain why Alcatraz has been trying to convince us he's a terrible person for the last 3 books.

Not only that, he's become an old mentor like Obi-Wan or Gandalf. :(

Maybe it's Bastille who dies...  (really this time) ;D

He's definitely going to kill Grandpa Smedry.  Though I don't think it will be directly, I think it will be one of those things where he breaks Grandpa's talent for just long enough that someone else kills him.  (Totally an accident on Al's part though.)

I can see this happening. Quite plausible.

Personally from what I gathered during the epilog in the second book I think he kills himself. Or well a part of himself. In it he explains that the young him was getting replaced peice by peice (like the ship of thesus) until there was nothing left of the original. He is now a copy...a fake.

I don't know... :-\

Bastille! You're back!

And it makes a lot of sense that Grandpa Smedry is the one who is killed. Unfortunately.

I thought that the epilogue there merely was about the changes Alcatraz was going through.

Thanks! Been busy babysitting siblings will dad's gone in Germany. Not much time anymore between swimming, family and school! hahaha!

Grandpa Smedry, if it had to be anyone, would have to go. He's like what over 100. Also it would be a big blow to the characters which would be a challenge.

The other post was just me thinking.

If anyone dies, I'm betting it's Bastille (sorry my dear.  And you just came back too.)

Grandpa would be too cliche.  Plus, we already know she dies.  It would be so in series to have her actually die when you think he hasn't.  I mean, look at the firebringer's lens from the first book.

Unfortunately Bastille would be my second choice to go... :( It's just that Alcatraz and Bastille are starting to like each other...

I feel really horrible doing this. Maybe i shouldn't. Ok fine, I will. Does anything...interest worthy happen between Alcatraz and Bastille? I'm not talking about them getting locked in a dark bedroom and doing obscene things but...at least a hug? Bonding of any kind whatsoever?
Ever since I started reading the Alcatraz series I couldn't help but quietly root for him and Bastille in some unused corner in the back of my cerebellum. But totally innocent stuff! *shudders* I'm not that creepy but still. Anything? Or just ignore me, I think I'd feel better about myself if you did.
