Title: Storm Leaders
Post by: Patriotic Kaz on September 17, 2009, 03:29:56 AM
Yeah i signed up for Dallas Nov. 14 because i live in one of its suburbs... no back up because the second nearest is in Gerogia i think...anyone else fill out the form yet?

Edit: Storm Leaders help with the signing for TGS and get to meet Brandon and in some places (Dallas is one of them thankfully) Harriet.

I think I might go and burn down the place were Bandon is going to be signing on Mass Ave. I was so angry when his tour didn't go to Mass last time, now hes coming to Mass and I can't go. Don't worry there will be no arsen but I'm angry and I want to do something about it. At least he's coming to Mass, maybe the next time he comes around he will come back and I will get to meet him. Enjoy.

I put in for San Diego, where I was fortunate enough to meet Brandon on the HoA signing tour.

I think the original post said we'd hear within a week of the 27th.

Monsta,
If you can't go to the Boston one, why not go to the one in Milford, NH?  It's only about an hour away.  That's the one I'm going to (although not as a storm leader, I wasn't sure I could make the extra commitment).

I want to know why more of us weren't picked....by posting on the forum he uses it shows we like him significantly for reasons other than WoT... else we wouldn't spend, in some cases, obscene amount of time here. I think i just feel sour i didn't get picked.

P.S. my excuse is being honest ( on the why should Brandon and Harriet want to meet you I put I could string you along a story but simply there is no reason why they should want to meet a UTD freshman who can't even chase his dreams for fear of being a pauper.)
Title: Re: Storm Leaders

Yeah, that question was a bit difficult. I just gave a background my WoT fandom and tipped my hat to Brandon by referencing Writing Excuses in the response. It wasn't particularly well written; I wrote my application late at night and got a bit emotional, but I kept it honest. I also suspect that there wasn't much competition for the Vegas signing. I really thought that I blew it with that answer. If I could do it again (wait, I do... next year!), I'd focus more on what makes me different as a person, not just as a fan. Typical job interview stuff (hasn't murdered anyone, likes long walks on the beach, has a tendency to ramble, etc.).

Hey there,

Look! I actually do lurk here on theses boards :D (And over at Reading Excuses when I can)

Thanks for this post.  I know it might sound strange coming from me, but I sincerely empathize with you over not being selected as a Storm Leader.  I know what its like to not be selected for something that I felt I'd be perfect for. :(

Choosing the Storm Leaders was, without a doubt, one of the hardest jobs Jenn and I have had in a long, long time.  I know that I specifically selected at least a couple of people who described themselves as die-hard Brandon fans who enjoyed MISTBORN and WARBREAKER as much as they do WoT.  The fact that you guys spend a lot of time on TWG is definitely in your favor.  But keep in mind that this is a Wheel of Time tour, and not a Brandon tour. (See the difference?) So while you might be a huge fan of Brandon's, there were a lot of die-hard WoT fans who also applied for these Storm Leader positions.  Jenn and I tried our best to choose SL's who came from both camps.

If you did not get picked for this year, I encourage you to try again next year.  We'll be sure to include a method for you to tell us if you applied this first time around, and if so, that will be something in your favor.   And when you apply, be sure to mention that you are a frequent contributor to TWG!

PS: Champion Kaz... Dallas was by far the most highly requested city that we had!  (Half Moon Bay, CA was the lowest if you want a hint for next year) ;-)

I remember reading Kaz's application and liking his honesty enough that he went in my "To be considered" pile.

But yeah, Jason is right. This was incredibly difficult. There were FAR more qualified applicants than there were positions. If we could have picked all of you, we would have.

Jason, thanks for your insight. I guess I'm a little confused. In my application I wrote about being a fanboy of both authors. What should I include next year to warrant greater consideration?

I apoligize.... i have found most people prefer lies to honesty....and i applied in Dallas because it's the only one i could possibly make. Anyone know how many books we can get signed? I was thinking on bringing my Mistborn books with me along with TGS.

Not sure I agree that "most people prefer lies to honesty", but I get what you're trying to say.  My "tip" about Half Moon Bay having better odds was mostly a joke. If you applied to a specific event, that's the one you got. There are not "switch ups" later on.

That will be up to the specific book seller hosting the event.  We'll try to gather that info and post it on Dragonmount.com

Hi mccullough -- I don't have any specific advice. I honestly wish there was.  99% of the applications we received were "worthy".  We just looked for a good mix of people for each city. We looked for people with different levels of interest in the series (everyone is die hard, but some have been reading for 20 years and some for 1. Those are examples of two very different perspectives on the series, and we wanted to honor both). We selected people who had interesting jobs. We selected people who were aspiring writers. We selected stay at home moms. We selected teenagers in high school. Basically we tried to find a diverse group.  And sometimes... we just had to flip a coin.

So for next year, just let us know what you're into, mention that you read every BS / WoT book the minute it gets posted, and mention that you're a contributor to this website's forums.

Oh - and send me cookies. haha. j/k

Thanks Jason! I probably should have mentioned that I broke the rules while on my LDS mission in order to read A Crown of Swords the day it came out and that a friend and I went to four different stores after midnight for Knife of Dreams only to find out none of the stores in the area were putting their stock on the floor until the next day, let alone having a midnight party. :)

My biggest weakness was probably my brevity. I was warring with myself on how much to write because I did not want to add to the overwhelming reading you guys had to wade through.

LOL!  Awesome. Yeah. Tell us that sort of stuff.  Better yet, convince your local bookstore to HOST a midnight party and then tell us about it.   It's one thing to be a super fan, and another to be a super fan who makes stuff happen.  That's what we love in our Storm Leaders.

(Although we specifically chose more casual fans too cause they deserve to get perks too)

Good luck next year! No promises, but may the Force Source be with you.

Still works as a place to talk about it all.

anyway, someone above was asking why some were picked over others?

when you fill out the application: think of it as a job, not a reward.

they're not picking the best fans, they're picking people who will help them run the signings.  I think that my two years in a bookstore, staffing multiple author signings at Loyola and Northwestern Universities is what made the difference.

anyway, good luck next year!

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I worked at the BYU Bookstore for three years and still have a relationship with several of the General Book staff. D'oh.
I guess that's what my point is, AGrey. You were rewarded for having a bookstore background, but that's not all they were looking for. Did you read Jason's post? They took FANS. CASUAL FANS. Hmm, interesting that. So, maybe not so much of a job interview, but how can one make one's self interesting to the powers that be.

If I am coming off as a touch bitter, I will admit I was a little at first. But I can appreciate the task of sifting through the applications and trying to find the best candidates is a difficult one. There isn't room for all. So the best the losers can do is learn from this year and try again next.

AGrey, I reread my last message and realized I responded a little harshly. Sorry about that. I agree with you that the organizers are looking for certain talents and skills, which is why you(deservedly) were selected. The point I disagreed with is that they were looking for the same in every candidate.

Anyway, best of luck at your signing. And may the Source be with you. (Sorry Jason, that's too good a line to pass up!) :)

By the way, if you live anywhere near Brandon, you do have the option of taking him (and Emily) out to eat sometime of your choosing. He accepts invitations like this with a reasonable frequency, especially if you can get a group of people together.

I apologize for being bitter earlier (to late to deny it isn't it....wait forget what i said i deny everything where is my lawyer!) it comes with a slight superiority complex (which I am working on and is gradually decreasing give 5 years :P) and bad luck for not being chosen for anything not work related (I get low wager jobs quickly and i interview well...probably better than i preform).... i can't ever remember being chosen for passing out cupcakes ect... little things build up and become frustrating

(if that made anyone pity me....you are wasting your time I'm a private person and it's a consepuence of my own actions and i only keep a small group of friends and never really hang out with aquaintances to make new friends)

If you're serious, I really do bake very good low-fat chocolate chip cookies... ;)  I think that this a really awesome thing you're doing for the fans and I just really hope to have a chance to participate during one of these releases.

I don't know if my favorite bookstore (Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego) would think they'd get enough traffic for a midnight release, but they've already been promoting the release in their emails.  I'll talk to them next time I stop by.

Lurker here, but wanted to let Titus know that I'm on this board, too. (He's the leader in my group of storm leaders :) )

As far as the application goes, I honestly have no idea how I became a Storm Leader (aside from the fact that I've been reading WoT for 10 years).  However, I did read somewhere that if you are a leader this time around you can't be for the next 2 books, so I think everyone will have a better chance next time around if you care to try again!

Not leader, silly. First among equals. We're a team, and I'm uhh... the only guy that some of the team's management will speak to. :P In the books, the only thing higher ranking than Tsorovan'm'hael is M'Hael (according to WoT Wiki), so we're all maxed. The M'Hael has to be Jason, who's either a forsaken just a dude who was forcibly made a forsaken's pawn by a circle of Blacks and myrddraal.
However, I did read somewhere that if you are a leader this time around you can't be for the next 2 books, so I think everyone will have a better chance next time around if you care to try again!
Aw, man! That would be way sad! I could totally understand, though.

Darkfriend power! Go us! And, in this case, the dark side literally does have cookies. Delicious oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies. Oh, and some grasshopper cookies. I would die without those. (Oh no, my weakness is exposed!) *disappears to munch*
