Title: I've got mine!
Post by: readerMom on June 05, 2009, 08:06:04 PM
I ordered Warbreaker through my local bookstore and they called me today to pick it up.  So I have my copy and now I can read it over the weekend without feeling too guilty about ignoring stuff.
My husband read it on the computer, but I hate doing that.  He has been impatient for me to get it so we could talk about it.

Yeah, reports of this have been rolling in, even though it's not supposed to go on sale until Tuesday.

Dang! I should have pre-ordered one! I started reading it online, but got tired of reading on the computer screen. Sounds like Warbreaker has some of the best reviews of Sanderson's works so far. I'm really looking forward to reading it!

the early (unsanctioned) release of novels is a big point of anger for me. bookstores dont pay attention to their street-date lists...

In case anyone's wondering what the problem is, it can mess up BookScan numbers for the release week (and thus bestseller ranking) if people buy their copies early.

Ok then your frustration is understandable... i never understood the big deal until now thanks for the explanation Ookla

Then I feel silly because the main reason I ordered it was to help with that first week sales list.
My bookstore is VERY small and probably didn't even think to check the new release dates, they put it in with all the other book orders.  I try to support them when I can because not many towns the size of mine have a bookstore at all.

You can read it quickly, return it, and then buy it again next week. :)

yeah, I just happened to be standing right there looking at other books when the guy at Barnes and Noble walks up and puts a bunch of copies of Warbreaker on the shelf. Needless to say, I suffered from a sudden case of impulse buying.

Crap, now I'm tempted to driver over to B&N to see if they have it on the shelf.

Heh. Me too....Me too....I'd like to see it sitting on the shelf...and yet. I'd rather the release week sales don't get messed up, so....yeah. Regardless, I'm not getting it until the release party. Makes me happy just thinking about that....

So, what day does the "release week" start on?  Calendar week or would it start on Tuesday?  No clue how the publishing industry works.

I'll hold off buying it until I know it helps BS's sales numbers.

BookScan numbers are added up from Sunday to Saturday, so if you buy it on Monday it will count as release week.

Or just buy two copies, I'm sure Brandon won't mind that at all.

I don't think my bookstore will make much of a difference because I am absolutely sure they don't have any other copies of Warbreaker. Their entire sci-fi/fantasy section consists of one three foot bookshelf, about half of it used. B&N doesn't have the excuse of being tiny and independent like Arches Book Company.
Just finished it by the way.  It was great. Now I will have strange dreams tonight.

Egads, that was fast. Did you do anything but read this past day? :o

I sent my husband and two oldest children off camping, made pizza for my younger ones, and put on several videos.
I am an evil Mom, but only when there is a book I really need to finish.

Haha!  Oh the joys of parenting!   ;)

I am tempted to go see if our local store has it out, but I know they wont, and even if they did, I'd rather wait till Monday to buy it due to the bestseller thing.

Just to confirm, I'm thinking about buying a copy today (if its at BN near me) and it will count towards first week's sales?

There were copies on the shelf at Books-A-Million in Oklahoma City this last Friday. That's where I picked mine up (I don't like e-books, they hurt my eyes if I stare at them for too long).

In case anyone's wondering what the problem is, it can mess up BookScan numbers for the release week (and thus bestseller ranking) if people buy their copies early.

I thought I heard this when Mistborn came out so when they called me last week to tell me my book was in I asked them if it would count towards the NYT best seller numbers since it wasn't supposed to be out until the 9th. I got put on hold then...
"Uhh, nevermind, we have your book and you can come pick it up on Tuesday."
"So I can't pick it up today then?"
"Uhh, no, but you can get it on Tuesday."

Now if I wasn't the one to point that out I'd be a little upset... especially if I got up to the register and got denied.

I picked up my wifes copy tonight and mine should be on the way in the mail from sam wellers. Told my wife she could not start reading hers till I got mine.... she laughed..

I picked my copy up first thing this morning and now just need to find the time to sit down and read it.  Although I don't see that as being to much of a problem.  :)

I'm going to B&N on my way to work today to pick up a copy.

You are not going to get much done at work today are you?

I haven't ordered mine yet. I order all my books from the Science Fiction Book Club.  Warbreaker is a feature selection this month.  I guess that means he is going to be getting more sales from the people who forget to decline there feature selections.

I went to the local B&N and they wanted full publisher's price for the book. Are they insane?
 :o

So I went online and ordered it from Amazon.   I added a book (see below) to the order to qualify for free shipping since it looks interesting.  I won't get the book until next week but at least the purchase will count towards release week book sales.

The Way of Shadows (The Night Angel Trilogy)  by Brent Weeks.  Anyone read it?

I read it and I have to say I found it to be a very good read.  It has a good story with some nice little twist, some great characters and the world building and magic is not too bad either.  It's one of my many favourites.

+1 to sales!

you got another sale in chicago today.

I won't read it for a while (still finishing feast for crows), but i'll slip it in to the book queue before the WoT reread i have planned for the summer.

just out of curiosity (without any details) how different is it from the early drafts?  I remember reading one of the first drafts back when the book was posted here as a work in progress.

I know there's a lot of new scenes, but that's all I know about.

Also, I totally had fun at the release party.  I got #3 which was way awesome.

Got it!  My local Barns and Noble had 5 copies, which is a lot for them when it comes to hardcover fantasy novels not within an established series... sounds like good news to me!  And while I was there, I managed to talk to a few other fantasy fans and push them towards some Brandon Sanderson works... so hopefully my campaign will yield some results as well.

I can't believe it. My local, and only new book store, in Muncie Indiana, did not have a single copy. What a waste of retail space for a chain book store.

I would have gotten it from a local independent book store if we had one.
You would think that a university town like Muncie (Ball State) would have a decent book store.

SO, I just ordered a signed one from Sam Wellers. If they are looking for a new place for a store...I know of an Indiana university town that could use a good store.

Bought it at Barnes and Noble yesterday, just finished it now. Wow. Wow. It's late but I won't be able to go to sleep for several hours now. Wow. Have I said that already? And I've got a whole list other books that are on my reading list for the summer, but I won't feel like starting them for a couple of days. It's hard to read other books after I finish one of Brandon's. They just never seem as appealing.

What is it with you people and your free time? :o

Yeah, I'm jealous. Spring Term is winding down, and I'm swamped. It was mere happy happenstance that I was able to make it to the release party.

Even still, I'm 50 pages in. ;D

About half way...  just at the point where I know I'm about to be sucked in and spend the rest of the night reading till I finish--but still have the presence of mind to want to slow down and make it last longer...

Just walked over to the BYU-I bookstore to pick mine up. It started raining REALLY hard while I was inside, and since I didn't have anything to put the book in (like a backpack), I used my body to protect it from getting wet....Now I am soaked. I haven't been this wet since Ireland....But I'm super-happy, cuz I've got my book. It's so pretty-ful...*sigh*
