I like boston cream pies, blueberry pie, and apple pie mostly.

I like cake, too, but pie wins.

It matters not how cake is spelled, it will always prevail.  8)

My vote should be obvious.

Come on Pie! You are my tastiest candidate!
Title: Re: Pie VS Cake: The Official Thread
Post by: Shaggy on June 02, 2009, 10:27:27 PM
But the question is: if 'cake' is not spelled like 'cake,' is it still cake? *scratches beard with two fingers while squinting eyes mysteriously*

And, if it's not, then you are technically putting in a vote for something other than cake, in which case your vote should be subtracted from the poll.…

Why do you think clowns throw pies at people instead of cake? Because they would rather eat the cake than throw it.

And on the seventh day, the lord rested and had cake. ;D
And on the second first day, he created pie because the cake was not to his liking. Also on that day: penguins!
Title: Re: Pie VS Cake: The Official Thread
Post by: Shaggy on June 02, 2009, 10:52:53 PM
And the penguins became poster-boys for pie, too.

Oh, and by the way…the apple in the Garden of Eden was actually a vanilla boston cream pie, and that was why Adam had to eat it–'cause it was JUST. SO. GOOD.

The Lord, He createth pie. And he tried it and said, "hmm... something is wrong here." And so he created cake, and saw that it was better.

Does Creme Brulee' / Flan count as pie or cake?

Next to those I like half chocolate half blond brownies with rasberry and chocolate sauces.  Then third in line is Chocolate fudge cake made in the Torte style not the Kuchen style with butter cream icing.  Not sure if that aligns me with the Pie Faces or the Cake Walkers. ;P

No way flan isn't like pie at all it is it's own catergory though torte is a fancy sweet cake... it honestly falls into that catergory while flan doesn't fall into any catergory other than flan so VOTE CAKE!!!!!

It's a close margin now.... I really wasn't expecting such a showing from cake, but they are doing quite well. Considering the quality of product they have to work with.

Remember, the cake is a lie.

Bush was born in Connecticut. Don't compare him to real Texans. 8)

He was born in Connecticut, but RAISED in Midland and Houston. Where you're born has nothing to do with where you've lived at, and where you are an official citizen of. Considering he wasn't even in Connecticut long enough to start school there (i.e. until about 4 or 5 years old), he's pretty much just as texan as anyone born and raised in texas, since, basically, your only social interactions to that point are your family.
Title: Re: Pie VS Cake: The Official Thread
Post by: Inquisitor on June 04, 2009, 05:20:04 PM
That's just not true. If you've ever been to Texas, you'll know that there is a big difference betweeen someone born and raised in Texas, and someone just raised in Texas  ;D
Title: Re: Pie VS Cake: The Official Thread
Post by: Patriotic Kaz on June 04, 2009, 05:33:31 PM
It's a citizenship thing and all Texans know it the only way to be nationalized other than birth is to marry a Texan by birth and stay wedded to them for a miserably long time... :P and all hardcore Texans were conceived born and raised in Texas
Title: Re: Pie VS Cake: The Official Thread

I will never understand Texans. I wouldn't apply the same standards for naturalization to the nation as you do to your piddly little state.

Yeah. I called Texas little. You only have 7.4% (http://www58.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=land+area+of+texas+%2F+land+area+of+the+united+states) of the total land area in the nation. So eat it. Eat your inferior spurious cake! Leave the pie for me. :P

Apparently Henry VIII likes pie....Interesting. :P

Apparently Henry VIII likes pie....Interesting. :P
Of course he does! Between the ages of 2 and 4 I refused to answer to anything but "The King of England". I also sang the song "I'm Henry The Eighth, I Am" and used the phrase "The King of England doesn't eat/do/clean [var]." Apparently I was just as crazy as a kid as I am now, which is comforting to me for some reason. *shrugs*

I have constructed a Venn diagram detailing a possible source of compromise: Cheesecake.
In the center of the cake square there you will see the Ocean of Decency. This is where cakes are actually quite delicious. Cakes in this area are of a perfect moisture, and can have a variety of frostings and toppings without getting out of hand with either. If you get far enough toward the corners you get deliciousness as well (Moist - Sweet Cream; Toppings - Flying Solo; Frosting - Caramel, Cotton Candy, etc.; Dryness - Wafers).

Pie has no corners, and so cannot be rated on so simple a scale. If I were to include all 360 degrees of deliciousness the diagram would look too busy and confuse half of the audience. You can assume that the degrees overlapping most centrally the square of cake are toppings, with the very center section made of the fruits. The 7th Circle is the most dangerous area to a pie-lover's palate, containing some of the most busy and evil pies ever made. While few cooks venture here, less return alive.

So, yeah! How about it, cake and pie dudes and dudettes? Cheesecake! It has the name of a cake and the deliciousness of a pie! (Naw, I'm just ribbing you cakers. :P But seriously. :|)

P.S. Has anyone else tried a pecan cheesecake? They are AMAZING!

It's probably a good thing that the Wedding never happened....Hayley never would've known what she was getting into...I'm sure she likes her head....on her shoulders.

P.S. Has anyone else tried a pecan cheesecake? They are AMAZING!

My brother and my dad love it. I don't like pecans, so I'm not a fan. My favorite pie is chocolate cream, but I also really like ice cream pies--like strawberry in an oreo crust, with chocolate syrup on top. Delicious.

I voted for cake, though. Yellow cake and chocolate frosting? Mmmm. It makes me happy just thinking about it.

Chocolate cream is a good choice, and for the record my favorite cheesecake is cherry. Or is that sherry? Or is that Sherry? ;););)

There must be some genetic thing that makes it impossible for me to understand why cake lovers love cake. :-\

There's no question about this.  A good pie will always be better than a good cake.  I'm not saying that there isn't any overlap.  There are definitely some cakes that are better than some pies, but when we're talking about the best of the best?  Man, no competition.    :D

We need order to our ranks. How about the following:

High Pie-ministrator (this could be only the leader's title. Also: Fellow Pie Supporters, we need a leader!! Who should has the filling to fit such a crust position?!)

High Knight of the Grand Pie  or High Dame of the Grand Pie

Knight of Crust or Dame of Crust

Scribe of the filling

Filling

Crust

Pie initiate

Wonderful ideas all. Welcome, Brother Dan.

Hmm. . . .Well, since sortitus started the thread, I think he should be the highest position. . . .How 'bout if you first posted on the 1st page of the thread you get one high position, on the 2nd then you get the next one down, 3rd and you get the next one down, and so on and so on until we reach the page which equals the lowest rank. After that, all posters whose first posts were on pages AFTER that are the lowest level. And sortitus can raise you. OR each time we get a new page, people progress one something like that.

It seems we have a nomination for sortitus, any one else fit for it, fellow pie-monauts? (for fairness sake, i suppose no nominating yourself, otherwise everyone might just pick themselves :P )

edit: Also, i suppose that since having a "leader" won't mean much if we give him some kind of power or something, he gets the power to give custom titles or something, outside of the standard ranks. Anyone oppose this? :P

Actually, if you agree with this, say 'I eat pie with sortitus.'  :P 'Cause then if all the pro people don't post we won't know if they agree or they just haven't read the thread.  :P :P

If you don't, then you should either vote for someone else or nominate someone else.

(Eerongal, should we start a new thread with a poll of candidates or just run it here? And when should the voting close?)

Our leader needs a properly regal sounding name. How about His/Her Majesty King/Queen [name], Guardian of Crust and Cream, Master of Desserts. We could give other titles to the other nobles of our kingdom (Dukes and Lords of various toppings). We'll have to have a clear order of succession as well, naturally giving the second in line the title His/Her Royal Highness appended to the start of their name.

Eerongal, you started the discussion of pie on the source thread (I would like to announce!), and the Order was your idea. I propose Eerongal as King for starting this, and LAVGRS as heir apparent for his contributions to the cause.

Let's run the voting elsewhere. We don't want to let this thread get too off topic. I'm feeling a bit too lazy ATM to make it myself....

On topic: Come on, pie supporters! Don't vote without posting! Tell us your what your favorite kind of pie is!

The actual cake of cake is OK, but it's fairly incompatible with anything but ice cream. Pie, on the other hand, is good with almost anything! Meat! Fruit! Jumping jacks! Cloth! Meteorites! SONAR! American Heritage dictionary:Cake
A sweet baked food made of flour, liquid, eggs, and other ingredients, such as raising agents and flavorings.

Which cheesecake has none of.

American Heritage dictionary:Tart
A pastry shell with shallow sides, no top crust, and any of various fillings.

Which cheesecake is all of.

It's also referenced on wikipedia, apparently, which i've seen you disregard before.

Also, on season 5, episode 7 of good eats, which is about cheesecake, alton brown specifically mentions as part of the history and etymology of cheesecake that it is in fact a pie (specifically, he said it is a custard pie), not mention the part about it actually being a tart, which as i said is a type of pie.

Also, this was in cooking classes I have taken.

if you put cheesecake as a catergory you have to separate all the categories or you are just being discriminatory... not to mention i don't think a cobbler is technically even a pie so it should be up there along with custards so Reonard can vote for his flan and creme brulle

I am a newcomer to this thread, but claim a superior knowledge of the subject as a former pastry chef in a world-class hotel.  Cake is fine, but pie requires a vastly greater skill set to do well.  The crust must contain some butter, but be flaky with a minimum of ice-water added quickly enough to keep the dough cool.  You must knead just enough, not too much, and not too thin.  The end result must not be soggy on the bottom, very difficult to achieve (but I have a secret.) The filling must set up, but be devoid of that floury or corn-starchy taste.  I have made chocolate mousse-filled cakes, dripping with butter cream and festooned with magnificent edible roses, that would put you cake lovers into rapture, but nothing beats a perfect holiday pie.

Hey, I never said I wasn't a pie sympathizer. You're the one who seems to think it's a terrible thing to be a cake sympathizer. I don't find it bad at all to like multiple kinds of desserts. Makes for an all-around better-tasting life. Especially when one of those desserts is Ben & Jerry's Half-Baked. Mmmm. Even thinking about that delicious goodness packed in a pint-sized carton makes me happy.

French Silk Pie:

Toast a bunch of shredded coconut, cool, add melted butter and sugar and pat into a pie crust. (sorry, I never measure)  Or pre-bake a Marie Callender's or Pet Ritz pie shell and cool.

Plop some homemade chocolate mousse, flavored with vanilla extract or Grand Marnier, into pie shell and top with freshly whipped heavy cream.  Shave dark baker's chocolate all over the top and chill a few hours.  It's so good it's almost a cake!

Cheesecake is indeed a cake!!!!!!!!! unless you get the frozen ones at the market and that's just a custard in a graham cracker crust.... i spoke with my father on this (and he was an executive chef at a 3 out of 4 star restaurant before practising law) and he says that new york style cheesecake AND all other cheesecakes that are restaurant quality or better have eggs and generally have milk  (and there is always a dairy product) not to mention they rise when you bake them...ha in your face whoever corrected me like 2 weeks ago... this is to late but ha anyways :P

sorry, but i believe my sources are a bit more reputable than your "dad saying so".

To repeat them, the new english oxford dictionary, wikipedia, a publicly broadcast tv show that covers the etymology of foods with food historians (they do exist), and my own personal experience with cooking classes. I'm sorry to say but those both out number, and generally out qualify your dad. :)

Also: Having eggs and milk doesn't change the fact that it still fills the tart description: "A pastry shell with shallow sides, no top crust, and any of various fillings."

the show includes CULINARY HISTORIANS AND ETYMOLOGISTS. Not chefs. You are basically saying with the above post that a history teacher is more reputable than a historian. A top notch chef doesn't care about the history and etymology, whereas these peoples sole jobs are to do that.

And if we're gonna play THAT mud slining game, which means nothing at all in any debate, I have well over 20 people in my direct family that have culinary degrees, so your 4 culinary degrees don't impress me (the reason why i don't bring it up, is because it's a moot point, the same as you bringing it up, it means nothing in a debate :) )

Chocolate and it had a bunch of different kinds of chocolate chunks cooked into it. And it wasn't too rich either, like some of the cakes here in the States can get....It was just...perfect. My favorite cake in the States is at Chili's. The  Chocolate Molten. It's delicious. Similar to your lava cake, Shaggy.

Although I think my favorite dessert in the States has got to be at a local place here in Rexburg. Craigo's. It's called the cookie monster, and it's this huge cookie--really thick--fresh out of the oven so it's warm and gooey, and it's covered with vanilla ice cream, and whipped cream and chocolate and caramel syrup...It's so freaking good.

Title: Re: Pie VS Cake: The Official Thread
Post by: Andrew the Great on July 15, 2009, 05:16:47 AM
Oh, come on, little wilson, you don't think I can prepare a good long rant? The only reason Chaos always has longer rants than me is that he gets off topic and includes other things in his rants.

It also depends on what you define as really long. I think anything above 1500 words is epic for a forum post. If you want a 20000 word essay, that's a little bit different.

Chaos, if you want to write it I'll write up a list tomorrow of all the reasons I can think of that cake is better, and send them to you. Or, I could do it, though I would appreciate your list of reasons if I do so. Between the two of us, we should be able to come with a rather extensive rant on the subject.
Title: Re: Pie VS Cake: The Official Thread

Together, we shall be unstoppable!

You should write the list. I have a cold and numerous headaches, so I'm not really in the mood to think up a big list. Hey, the headaches will just add to the "hazy thinking" that makes a ChaosRant™ so desired ;)

Post by: Andrew the Great on July 15, 2009, 04:56:45 PM
I'm sorry, Andrew. But Chaos' ChaosRant™s  just stand out more....

I won't deny that. He's typically more groundbreaking with his rants/crazy theories than I am. Usually what happens is something like this.

1) Chaos sits at his computer reading posts from TWG
2) Chaos decides it is time for a good ChaosRant™
3) Chaos types extensively on a subject, listing various thoughts without ever really taking an opinion
4) Chaos begins taking opinions on the subject and adds them to the ChaosRant™
5) Chaos posts an epic-length ChaosRant™ to TWG for all of us to read and wonder at. We all read it and wonder at it. Then we read it again and wonder what exactly Chaos was thinking. Section 22x can't be correct, and section 398b contradicts a statement from Brandon.
6) Andrew decides to do and epic-reply to the ChaosRant™
7) Andrew steals most of Chaos' ideas, shuffles them around a little bit, organizes them into a theory that works, and posts it
8) Everyone reads it and says, "Hey, that works! I love/hate it!"
9) Andrew takes credit for stealing ideas and putting them in a great big post.  ;D

Oh, and there are other reasons his rants tend to stand out more. Like the fact that he's actually able to attempt to convey drama through text, which I haven't yet really attempted. Like the fact that his rants have a trademarked name, whilst mine are just epic p0sts...... You get the picture. If we could call my rants anything as exciting as ChaosRant™ then it might be another story. For now..... Yes.

Chaos, I'll send you a list in a bit. Right now, I have to go to a piano lesson.

EDIT: And I have yet again forgotten that 8 + ) = 8) . You'd think I'd learn to use a different numbering system....

Space Text Opera time!

Which gets me thinking. Why don't we just append "Opera" to any genre to signify epicness? Steam(/Cyber) Opera. Sword and Opera (should that be Opera and Sorcery?). Urban Opera. I foresee problems with this, but we should run with it like it's a stolen croissant.

Which makes me think of other French baked goods. Notably eclairs and the excellent pie that was lent the name.

Title: Re: Pie VS Cake: The Official Thread

No, all that sign says is that if there's a British "Ninja" around, you're likely in danger. You see, they'll try to do something cool and ninja-ish and will end up seriously injuring themselves and anyone within 20 ft. Anyone within 50 ft will die of trauma at having their opinion of ninjas so thoroughly obliterated.

It is my right, and I will defend it to the death!

So, you're going to pull out your anti-European sentiment now, are you? Such bigotry shall not be tolerated here, sir, and I resent your insinuation that I do not have the genetics necessary to perform incredible feats of concealment and murder.

Have you no respect for your British forefathers, who risked their lives to sail to this continent on the Ninja, the Pinto, and the Santa Marina? No human not present on those ships saw those who sailed on them for months! Some were not seen by others for years! That should be all the proof you need. Need I insult your manhood? Need I?

Good lord! The residents of this house go through boxes of cookies like an angry rhinoceros goes through a grass hut! My baking hand is going to send me an emergency fatigue warning if this keeps up!

You're also insulting mine. I don't appreciate that. The British are cool. British Ninjas, however, are not, because they are certifiably false.

sort, you're just trying to change history now, aren't you? Changing history and names of ships won't help you convince us British Ninjas are true. It just lets us know that you think you live in some alternate universe...Or something. In this universe, it's the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.

Yeah, Scotland and Ireland are totally not in the British Isles.

British ninjas are the best of the best. This is why you don't ever see them. Don't mistake the random British people you see wearing ninja suits for ninjas. In Japan, they'll call you a ninja if you have the suit and proper wait-our-turn villain etiquette. Oh, and you have to be enrolled in a martial arts school. In Britain, you have to earn that suit. Ray Park has mad martial arts skills and is still not a Brinja. Yeah. They're that hardcore.

Oh, I'm sorry, miss history. I won't challenge your worldview with little-known facts about America's colonization. Though I will admit to making a mistake on one of the names. It's "Pinata", not "Pinto".  It would be totally silly to name a ship after a bean or a poorly designed automobile.

To give Kaz credit, he never did say British. He said English....So I guess if you don't have English blood, he's not even insulting your genetics. He's still insulting mine though, which is sad, because I, like him, am a cake supporter, and cake supporters should stick together....

Whoa, the Brinja's haven't even accepted Darth Maul into their ranks? Exclusive bunch....Or maybe they just don't like people who've fried themselves in half....I may be able to accept their existence if Ewan McGregor is one of them...Maybe.

Ah. Pinata. I wish you hadn't messed up. I didn't believe you the first time because I couldn't believe they'd name a ship the Pinto....But Pinata makes much more sense. What were those little-known facts you were talking about?

Of course, it's difficult to say who's English. Just Saxons?

If Ewan McGregor is a Brinja, he has truly mastered the skill of hiding skill. Hensojutsujutsu, as it is called by the Brinja clans.
Ah. Pinata. I wish you hadn't messed up. I didn't believe you the first time because I couldn't believe they'd name a ship the Pinto....But Pinata makes much more sense. What were those little-known facts you were talking about?
Oh, the fact that these ships were British, and their actual names. Stop the Spanish propaganda!

Well I'm mostly Danish and English, so I'm insulting my own forefathers, yes. They'll get over it.

Seriously, I'm much more inclined to believe that the so-called "Brinjas" are non-existent. Honestly, with no major achievements and no one knowing about them, except apparently sortitus, I refuse to believe they are more than a bunch of wanna-be ninjas. I would have made wanna-be plural, but I have no idea how you do that. Wanna-bes? That just looks weird. Hmmm... I shall have to ponder on this. Maybe ask a REAL ninja.

In that example, wannabe was an adjective. Perhaps you're looking for "ninja wannabes"?
Maybe ask a REAL ninja.
Good luck finding one. Like quicksilver they are, and nigh impossible to detect in the first place.

On reflection, Ray Park could be a deep-cover Brinja. You know, a Brinja pretending to be a guy who acts like a Brinja but isn't, but actually is one. Those Brinjas are way clever.

Semi-related: my nephew calls Asian pears "ninja pears". It's super-cute, especially since he doesn't say "ninja" right (inja pears :D). My sister got him addicted to them by telling him that they helped me get my ninja skills. Also, I teach him and his little sister how to jump off high things safely and kiai. Good times.
