Does any one know if Brandon has any intention of selling book plates? He's mentioned them before but I can't seem to be able to find where to buy them.

I know at one point he was talking about selling them in his store, but it doesn't appear that he is. You could email him and he might be able to get back to you on it.

I have emailed him but he is a busy guy, and has yet to respond.

What exactly are book plates? Too many images of what that might be come to mind so I need clarification on this one.

They are small pieces of paper (usually something stronger like card stock) that an author signs that you can put in a book.

I see, I was thinking of either actual plates with the cover of the book on it or some sort of metal plate cover.

Book plates are something he wants to do, what' holding him up is what to charge for them. He wants to make sure his costs are covered for shipping + cost of the plate but he feels that price is too much just for a sheet of paper with his name on it.

Seems that a good "set point" number is $9.95 another would be $12.79. These are arbitrary numbers, but people respond positively to them when buying personalized items. BS needs to remember that the price needs to be high enough to discourage people from buying them and reselling on EBay, and should also offset the time he spends signing them. His time is currently worth a good deal of money and it's false humility to refuse to charge for it.

Well, not to mention the foreign rates have to be taken into consideration. Brandon has a lot of foreign exposure (and will be getting even more). just building a full table of rates would be a chore. Also, he would have to package the plates in a way that prevents them from being bent (both foreign and domestic). This in turn ups the cost of materials and shipping. There is actually a lot that goes into this stuff. Also, he would have to possible make variable rates depending on the size of the novel (HB vs PB vs Trade vs other random foreign sizes/US money making schemes).

I would have to agree Cathar. It would certainly be cheaper for me than travelling all the way over there which I am seriously considering.

I don't think hes ever been within a 500 mile radius of me... which sucks...hopefully this will be remidied on his GS tour...one question can you bring books for him to sign that aren't what hes is touring for?

if the book has his name on it, he will sign it for you.

Don't ask him to sign anything by another author, but books with his name are fair game. I have been lucky enough to be in an area where I can attend signings regularly and he has always been very gracious.

Yeah, he's really good about signing books. The only WoT books he'll sign are the ones with his name on the cover - a few people at other signings have asked him to sign books 1-11 and he politely refused.

It was an impolite request. So good for him about politely refusing. How crude, "Here someone else wrote this material, but I want to rub your nose in it so would you sign it for me?" Or, "Hey didn't you used to weigh about 80 pounds more have grey hair and wear glasses?"

the people I saw asking were pretty cool about it. in fact I haven't seen anyone rude to Brandon at signings thus far. Brandon has a rep as a nice guy which is well deserved.

No I didn't mean they behaved rudely. I was just putting voice to the subtext. The request is inherently thoughtless of the fact that the writer, sitting at that table, sweltering in library heat or freezing in bookstore Air, is a person. :D
I was reading where an actor was sitting in a restaurant and a fan came up, identified him by another actor's name and asked for an autograph. Rather than embarrass the fan, the actor signed the name he'd been given. He laughed, but it stung.
After BS has 50 books to his credit, it might not be a big deal. But right now I'm sure it was a slap in the face, no matter his reputation for being a nice evil-overlord.

It's most likely just that he's associated with WoT now. And Brandon rightly wouldn't sign out of respect for RJ.
