Title: HoA paperback cover
Post by: Glacialis on April 29, 2009, 09:41:42 PM
I know I'm late to the party, but I have to say that I vastly prefer the paperback cover art to the hardcover. To be honest, I'd love to get the first two as prints. The third? I can't find a decent picture of it but it looks tasty from the tiny Amazon thumbnail.

Wait...found one!

I don't know if Christian McGrath is the artist. I liked the HoA hardcover more than the others, but far less than the paperbacks. I haven't read Warbreaker but its cover looks very, very nice.

Anyone who has the book, or who can find the blasted information on the tubes, clue me in on the cover artist's identity?

Thanks!

I prefer the hardcover one just a bit (although this one is more in sync with the first two).  :-\

The cover is by Christian McGrath again.

I really don't like the paper backs period...the first final empire i thought was cooler, and i don't find Vin attractive on the paperbacks and she is supposedly stunning...

I find her kind of…ugly, actually.  :-\

I'm never fond of covers that rely too strongly on photographic model reference. I do like the paperback covers in that they're more character-accurate in certain terms than the previous covers (mist-skirts?), but I agree that this Vin doesn't look quite right to me, either... too bony in the cheeks, and her hair is too thick in the back.

But what the hell, I'm not impartial by any means.  ;D

And you spelled 'giggle' wrong.

I don't know, I really like the black-white contrast in between Elend and Vin

The only part of the cover I liked was Elend.

Poping in here!  :D I like how Elend looked as well. Vin just looks strange. I don't like the hard cover version. It just makes Vin look like a child.

The Vin on the paperback cover looks so much like one of my cousins that it causes this weird cognitive dissonance whenever I see it. Really kind of disturbing.

I thought the paperback cover for Final Empire was the worst. Oddly deformed Kelsier + Grim Reaper Inquisitor = FAIL.

Yes, this greatly bothers me as well.  When I bought the HoA paperback the other day I saw a version of the FE cover that was done in the style of the later releases and wanted to buy, but I'm poor.  I was already buying a copy of a book I already own, no need to buy two!

I will take any McGrath cover over the old paperback cover any day. That said, I'm a bit bummed that McGrath didn't go with a more washed-out/hazy look for the covers like he did with Jim Butcher's and Kat Richardson's novels. Considering the mist in Mistborn, I think he missed a great opportunity.

Too right.  The Dresden Files' covers are great.  The stories take place in Chicago, which definately is not as misty as Luthadiel.

I love the Dresden Files and their covers.  Those would have been really cool.

In that book she was, at least at the beginning... by the end of the book she's filled out and grown up some. By the third book she's around 19 or 20 or so, isn't she?

I like the new paperbacks better than the hardcovers, but the hardcovers are all infinitely better than ugly vin. Yes, I am talking about the first FE paperback. It is, without a doubt, the scariest cover I have ever seen.

*shudder* I was so glad when the new PB covers did away with Ugly Vin.

As for the HoA PB, I quite liked seeing Elend there too. His uniform was a little too... oriental, though, imo. I mean, from the descriptions, I pictured a more Western (European) style uniform. Still, I like how fearless the couple looks.

I believe I could accept the casting of Kate Beckinsale as Vin, if necessary. Though I think if there were a movie, I'd rather see a unknown actress who fits the role rather than a known actor/actress who forces the role to fit themselves.

I could not speak to miss Kate's acting ability. The Underworld movies weren't exactly classy cinema.

Yeah, I always imagined something in a more Victorian or even American military cut. But then again, perhaps that's all influenced by what I bring to the reading as a westerner. I certainly don't recall much detail about the cut aside from it mention of a high collar and it being white.

They only did away with ugly Vin to put another ugo in her stead... but that's just my opinion
