Title: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Miyabi on April 27, 2009, 05:07:22 PM
I think this goes here.  It's also probably a dumb question, but when is it?

November every year.

Thanks Silk.  I didn't realize that it was like a national event. ha ha.

Haha, more like international. I think they just decided that calling it InNoWriMo would be awkward. ::)

I'mma try and convince a bunch of my friends to do it with me this upcoming November.

I would do it, but I'm afraid that one month of hard core writing will burn me out for a long peroid of time (I wrote seventy thousand words during one month a year ago, and I didn't put pen to paper for three months afterwards).

Haha. It's actually great fun. The sense of accomplishment doesn't hurt, either.

I think everyone should try it at least once. :D

Speaking of NaNoWriMo... what is everyone planning to do with their winnings?  I'm referring to the free hardback printing offered by CreateSpace this year to the winners.  I finished the word count, but my novel is nowhere near completion, so I thought I'd get a few of my short stories together and have those printed.

Anyone else?
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Silk on May 16, 2009, 06:58:56 AM
My novel will easily by finished by then; it's got 20k words left in it at most. So that's what I'm doing.

The short story idea is a pretty cool one too, though. :)

I finished my novel at the beginning of this month.  I have a friend who does amazing art minips so I had her create a cover for me (because from what I've heard you can have a cover added.  If not, well, I'll just paste her cover on because it's AWSOME!)  Now all I need to do is spell check this thing and post it.  :D
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?

Congrats, both of you!  You are very fortunate- I have plot holes staring me in the face at almost every point of my novel... it's going to take a lot of re-plotting and revising before it's done.  And I have the sneaking suspicion that I have a lot left to learn about writing in general! :D
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Silk on May 17, 2009, 02:28:31 AM
Heh, oh, believe me. I think I've nailed most of the plot holes, but despite the fact that the thing is written from beginning to end, it's nowhere near what I'd call "done". It has more problems than it has words.

Oh well. ::)
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: firstRainbowRose on May 17, 2009, 03:45:38 AM
I have the same problem.  I've decided that I'm actually going to break what I call my "book" now will be three different books.  But you have until the 31st to get something submitted, so I'm just calling it good.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Shaggy on May 17, 2009, 03:50:38 AM
I admire you both for your perseverance and dedication. May I ask how long it took you to 'complete' your novels?
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: firstRainbowRose on May 17, 2009, 03:59:31 AM
Do you want total time, or a guess of how long without breaks?

Total time: About three years (this includes pretty much a years worth of dead time)
Work Time: about four months total (this still includes some dead time)
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Silk on May 17, 2009, 04:16:39 AM
Heh. Yeah, a bit over four years for me, but there's a lot of dead time in there, not to mention the fact that I rewrote the first three chapters several times while trying to figure out what my actual, yanno, story was.

I'll be rather more on task with the next one. ;)

ETA: In the interests of honesty, I should probably add that it's not complete yet, but it certainly will be. (By no later than the middle of next week, say, or I'm going to throw myself out of a window.)
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?

Ok, wow, that makes me feel a bit better- no offense- knowing you both took that much time to finish.  Last year was my first year to participate, so now I don't feel so bad about my work ethic (though it is pretty crappy right now). :)
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?

Heh. It takes some people longer. My professor says it took her seven years to write her novel Anomaly. (Which, by the way, is fantastic and you should all read it.)

Yeah, I'm gonna attempt again. I've got some free time on my hands, so why not use it for something as fun as writing? You know, the kind of fun that induces scatterbrain syndrome and mental breakdowns  :)

I'm getting ready to do this. again.

Got my outline started. (I'm one of those that needs an outline if I'm going to make the deadline.)
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: RavenstarRHJF on October 11, 2009, 12:03:05 AM
Hoping to use it to actually finish the book I started last NaNoWriMo.  I started without an outline and no clear idea of what it was about beyond "This is the protagonist, this is what he has to do, and this is how it ends."  So I reached the deadline at either a third of the way through or the halfway point- I'm still not sure exactly which.  Since then I've been working on an actual outline though, so maybe I'll get it finished.  It still qualifies, since I'm only counting what I will write in the month of November, not what's already written. :)
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: firstRainbowRose on October 12, 2009, 07:39:23 AM
I think I've got two different plots well enough outlined that I can do them for nano this year.  I'm also trying to push a couple of half hearted writers into doing a mini word war with me to try and help them be motivated.  But you can definatly count me in and expect to see a shiny little "2009" award to join my current one.  :D

Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Frog on October 12, 2009, 07:06:00 PM
I'm thinking about it. I haven't done it before and it sounds like fun, but I am so close to finishing my current WIP and would hate to abondon it before 'finishing' the first draft. I do have another book that I am brainstorming though, so if all the stars align and I have my first book done, maybe.... :-\
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Silk on October 13, 2009, 07:33:10 AM
You could also just work on your current draft?

Unless you don't think it has 50,000 words left, I suppose...
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Frog on October 13, 2009, 02:34:15 PM
No, I don't think it does. I think I'll be pulling teeth just to get 20,000-30,000 more words into it at this point.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Jexral on October 14, 2009, 07:09:33 PM
I will go for it if I am able to finish the first draft of what I'm working on now, and won't if I don't.  That's what I decided.  I have fewer than 50k words left in this, and if I try writing something else, I don't think I'll be able to finish it.  <shrug>

I have a story, but in spirit of NaNoWriMo I'm going to start a brand new one and see if I can make the deadline.  Lets hope!

Either way, I'm definitely participating.

Uhh, you realize that you're allowed (encouraged) to worldbuild and outline before it starts, right? Or are you just looking for an even bigger challenge?

I did it cold last year and got about 12K done. It was pretty pathetic.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: stridera on October 15, 2009, 12:46:08 AM
I already have the world and story planned.  I've been planning it for a while... just waiting for next month to start.

I've just heard of people who take half finished stories, and basically enter the contest at 25k or so... which is cheating!
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: RavenstarRHJF on October 15, 2009, 05:16:07 AM
See now, that's something I won't do.  I got 50K of my NaNoNovel done last year, but it is by no means finished.  Probably has another 50K in there somewhere, and all I'm counting is the new stuff.  To keep myself honest, I'm going to start a new document instead of working from the old one.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Silk on October 15, 2009, 09:04:01 AM
Yeah. I worked from a "nano" document last year, made the November word count much easier to keep track of.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Gollumite on October 16, 2009, 12:53:40 PM
I'm considering doing NaNo this year too, but I'm feeling a little apprehensive about setting aside my current WIP (which is proceeding at a snail's pace--first attempt ever atwriting anything) to do something that will basically amount to a waste of time.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: firstRainbowRose on October 16, 2009, 08:14:10 PM
It may seem like a waste, but it does help.  I had a book that I had very little in last year, so I put all of my writing into a "nano qualifying text" document (anything I wrote in november on it) as a way to get further into the novel.  By the end I really could appricate writing 2k a day.

Now (and I really do think it's because of nano) I can start a short or something at work and have nearly 2k writing by the time I go home (six hours worth of work, typing in between calls.  They don't allow internet, which really helps.)  So even if the writing sucks, it will help you get into the habit of writing.

I'm doing NaNo again this year. If all goes well, I should even be able to finish. Unlike the pathetic attempt of last year. Argh.

Finish your book or finish NaNo? Or both?
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: little wilson on October 17, 2009, 01:11:39 AM
Finish NaNo....possibly my book. I think it has a little more than 50k words left to write, but maybe not. Depends on how the writing for NaNo goes and what-not.

Also, I still have yet to pull anything close to what you did last year. I still want to. Kind of.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Silk on October 17, 2009, 03:14:28 AM
Haha. I have yet to pull off anything close to what I did last year. The closest I've come since is about 11k in a day. ::)

As for wanting to... yeah! You should totally try it!

Once.

I mean, I had an absolute blast. But I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be healthy to do it often. ::)
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: firstRainbowRose on October 17, 2009, 05:04:48 AM
Silk, that was just plain epic.  I doubt that very few people can say they've done that.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Silk on October 17, 2009, 06:00:04 AM
*wry grin* Epic's probably a pretty good word for it, yes. Especially since I'm a horridly slow writer at the best of times. (No, really!)

I could go all melodramatic and wring my hands and moan about how I hardly wrote anything in December (I think I wrote one scene, and it was a rewrite) but I think that had a lot more to do with end-of-semester burnout than anything.

I'm nervous as hell about this. Mainly because I haven't turned out a full novel yet, but heck, I've got to get the bad ones out of the way, right?

Neither have I. My first novel idea (you know, the "golden idea") never got past 30,000 words. So I don't know how this novel thing goes either ;)

Ditto. To both....My golden idea didn't even get to 20k, though. Sad....However, if I finish NaNo this year, the book I'm working on (different than the golden idea, which I attempted to do last year and failed miserably at, like I already said) will hit almost 80k...I can work with that.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Bravesamwise84 on October 17, 2009, 05:18:15 PM
Yeah I'm slightly nervous that my book might not have enough for that, but hopefully my outline can prevent this.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Chaos on October 17, 2009, 05:26:38 PM
I don't know, my outline for my new book has helped immensely. There are layers and layers of things to uncover, a good sixty chapters worth. I'd personally recommend a chapter-by-chapter outline, rather than anything vaguer.

Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: firstRainbowRose on October 18, 2009, 02:20:28 AM
Outlines like that are great if you can do them.  However, some of us discovery writers......
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Chaos on October 18, 2009, 02:30:24 AM
Well, yeah. Definitely don't do an outline if you're a discovery writer. But me, even when I didn't write outlines, I knew I was an outliner. Sounds counterintuitive, but it's true: I just always had the story in my head. That caused some difficulties, as I'd forget rather important pieces of information.

(I once had a story with seven items of ultimate power. I forgot what the seventh one was, so it got cut out of the story ;) )

For me, outlines are great, and of course, outlines aren't for everyone.

Don't you know?  We're all weird -- we want to be fantasy authors.  That doesn't exactly make us fit in with the rest of society.

On a nano related note, is anyone else excited that createspace is doing the same deal as last year?

Totally!  I'm just a little worried.  Any reason why we shouldn't accept that?  Would it cause problems if we decided to send our novel elsewhere to get published?  I know they do a PoD type of thing, so I was worried that by sending them our novel, they would get some rights about future publishing.

Obviously, I haven't read the site yet, but those are the worries that first pop in my head.

I ended up taking too long and wasn't able to get mine (ask silk for confermation) but basically you submit the info, they send you one copy of the novel and then ask you if you want to sell it on their website.  As long as you say no, it shouldn't show up as a published work.  (Right?  Can someone in the industry confirm this?)

I was kicking around the KiddoWriMo site (http://ywp.nanowrimo.org/) (that should totally be its name for the elementary school age group, btw), and saw this awesome page (http://ywp.nanowrimo.org/workbooks). The HS level workbook looks like it might actually be useful. I downloaded it and am looking through it as we speak. Not bad. Pretty basic, but some sections look helpful. They're worth a look, anyway.

You can choose the privacy settings for your proof copy. Just change the settings so your book is invisible (or whatever it actually said). As long as you don't try to sell any copies ordering a free proof shouldn't hurt you any.

Hahaha. I'm here to help :P

...Oh man. I'm totally going to have to make some sort of "on the list" joke for my ... ahem... winter holiday forum name.

You'll notice I didn't name any specific holidays. That's because, while I'm as guilty of potty-mouth as the next person (err, probably a lot more guilty than many of the people on here) there are some lines in profane language that even I will not cross.

Edit: Though the holiday in question would, of course, involve an iconic character with a penchant for making dichotomous lists. And checking them more than once.

I hate being PC. Just wish everyone a happy 'whatever-holiday-you-happen-to-be-celebrating.' I am not Jewish, but that does not mean I am opposed to having a happy hanukkah.  And I will be very disappointed if such a well placed joke does not come to light. ;)

*Snorts* Oh, I wasn't trying to be politically correct. I think that naming certain holidays of the winter variety up is as bad as (worse than!) uttering certain four-letter words. :P

Carries unpleasant connotations, and all that ::)

So....turns out I won't be doing NaNo after all. School all of a sudden just got super-crazy for me, and if I were to do NaNo, there is a very good chance I would fail my Geology class. I'm still probably going to fail it, but...yeah. I don't want to think about that yet....

I will probably still write a bit, but I'm not shooting for the 50k. I can't afford to sacrifice school in favor of writing...

I'm not sure what my writing goal is right now. I just have to write a lot today because I have to work at my paying job the next four days. That will cut into my writing time a lot.

I have a feeling that I need to write a lot this month since I outlined my novel at 19 chapters and I'm only a chapter and half into it at 8,000 words currently.

After World Fantasy (Parties until 3am, wake up at 9am to get to a panel by 10) I was pretty dead come sunday night.  I tried to write... but ended up going to bed instead.

But... I feel MUCH better today, so I'll see if I can make up for yesterday once I get off of work.

Yeah, see... I wish I could do sass right now.  I'm pretty much stuck with getting it down and worrying about making it funny/amusing/interesting/gripping later.  I doesn't help that I'm trying to pick up in the middle of a story I haven't touched in almost a year.  And changing POV's at the same time.  Good luck everyone who's behind!  I'm trying to catch up myself.

I'm Andrew the Great there. Any of you are more than welcome to add me.

I've been up since 4am this morning since I had an early desk shift. Caffeine is all I'm running on!

This scene is working out so fantastically fluidly, it makes me love having objectives for scenes. "Oh, reveal this and that." I'm not worrying about where it's going to appear, but there have been golden opportunities for this. It's wonderful.

I'm doing well, I'll admit it. I wasn't doing this well last year. Though I am writing fewer than a 1000 words per hour (actually probably around 500 words/hour). I'm just putting in a lot of hours.

If I didn't have to work, I might have hit the 50k mark already.

Also, here's some fun wallpapers I found if anyone wants them.  (I got them by typing nanowrimo into the google image search and making it display only large images.)

Yeah, I'm now 14,000 words behind, according to all of those lovely calendars. But I'm moving in the right direction. 6,000 words two days ago (2,000 of which had to be scrapped later for reasons which cannot be stated. It really pained me to get rid of words, though), and  4,000 yesterday. Total wordcount of 11,332. So I'm where I should have been at the end of week 1. Yay!

If it's any comfort, I'm having real trouble getting the chapter I'm working on right now to work right. At all. Besides, you've got to be relatively close to where I am, right? You did, after all, say that you were around 14,000 words behind.

Also, I didn't say they were 6,000/4,000 good words. Frankly, some of them really really sucked, and I'm pretty sure that the entire second chapter of my book came out sounding like an infodump.

Well I didn't write much yesterday, so I'm now holding steady at 10k behind. I could probably catch up, except I have relatives coming for Thanksgiving on Tuesday, and I will be killed if I attempt to ignore them and write. So i essentially have to catch up 10k, then write another 10k or so to make up for the writing I'll miss during the week. All of this within the next two days. Sounds fun.

So yeah, My NaNoWriMo prospects are looking a little bleak. Though I do have this entire week off school, so that might help. I'll still be attempting to finish, but since i just hit 25k today, it should be interesting to see if I can pull it off.
Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Chaos on November 22, 2009, 07:39:01 AM
I'm 20,000 behind. Looks bleak, yeah? Not so fast.

I'm staying at MSU for Thanksgiving break, and I'm working the front desk. There's no class on Wednesday, so I'm virtually done at 4pm Tuesday. From that time until Monday at 8am, I work a mind-numbing fifty five hours. Wow. So let's see, with the amount that I have done now, to finish, I must write 600 words an hour. A quick calculation supposedly reveals that's 10 words per minute. Not... impossible.

Writing tomorrow and Monday, if I write 6000 words in that time, then I'll have to write 500 words per hour. Even better.

So I can do it, supposing I sacrifice my Thanksgiving, which I planned on. I can do this.

I don't know, even 10,000 is pretty reasonable. You could still finish in 5 days. So that would be about 4 - 5 hours of writing for me (since I'd slow down a ton towards the end). More for some, less for some, but it's doable, assuming you have no life over Thanksgiving.

Basically what he said. Though, I wrote 8k today, and it took me 7 hours, so maybe my estimate of 4-5 hours a day is a little optimistic.

Anyway, came back to report that I just won, with a wordcount of 50,127. I can now go back and fix the multitudes of issues that have sprung up within my novel.

Not for me this time. Took me too long to get around to it, I guess.

Still, got about 35,500 words, evne though most of it's useless in terms of actual prose (a lot of outline-y stuff, and some stuff that's just plain bad). Not bad considering that I started writing, uhh, Sunday. >>;

Title: Re: NaNoWriMo?
Post by: Silk on December 02, 2009, 06:44:23 AM
Mmmyep. It actually pulled something similarly ludicrous last year (and I did finish last year) and knocked out 25,000 words on the last day.

Actually, I suppose that's about what I did yesterday too, since by the time I went to bed on Sunday I only had 11,000ish. Hm.

I just wish more of it was actually stuff that would end up being productive. Most it was outline and backstory (though very detailed outline). I think most of the actual scenes I did end up writing probably won't end up in the book, except perhaps as flashbacks (one scene I may be able to squeeze in early). I wrote them anyway because, uhh, I was sick of doing outlining and world building.

Ahem. No, I wrote them because I needed a way to make the characters accessible to me; they're all pretty far outside of my experience. So, I suppose writing all that stuff was productive. It's just kinda discouraging to think that most of it won't actually end up in the thing itself.

Ah well. That's the way the game works, I suppose.
