Title: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: CthulhuKefka on November 14, 2008, 06:28:20 PM
Ok, so this thread is dedicated to nostalgic TV shows you remember fondly from your childhood. I'll start off.

Space: Above and Beyond. Was SO glad when I found that they had released it on DVD. Stupid FOX curse of cancelling good tv shows after one season.  >:(

Fox ruined many of my childhood TV shows. Or well, I am still a big kid, but years ago when I wasn't so...you get the idea.

Freakazoid (My love. My joy. My hilarity.)
The Tick
Thundercats
Voltron

I should have probably added Brimstone to my list of nostalgic shows canceled by Fox too soon.  :D

And thanks, now I'm gonna have the Freakazoid theme stuck in my head all day!

Lol! Awesome! I totally forgot about that show. I loved it as a kid. Didn't the SciFi Channel ressurect it awhile back?

A show that I remember fondly is the X-files back when Mulder was still on the show. At least Fox kept that one going for a long while. Maybe a little too long....

I think Sci-Fi picked it, but it didn't run any longer than it did on Fox. There was only one season and most people believe that the studio execs at FOX wanted to tank the show before it was even given a chance.

Dinosaurs. It was a like a prehistoric Family Matters. So cool.
I liked the Mario cartoon that was on for a little while, but don't have much memory of it. . .
Mighty Max! That show was cool!

hmm....Pinky and the Brain was among my favorites. (though I may have been a bit old at that time to call it my childhood) :D

I second, third, fourth or whatever number I am, the Freakazoid nod. I loved that show. And I wasn't a kid when I watched it, you didn't need to be a kid. And now I'm gonna have that theme song stuck in my head all day too. I had to chime in on it, since my head was singing about it.

I also liked the New Adventures of Jonny Quest, but I think that was only on Cartoon Network. I had a fondness for The Tick, and X-Files, and I am not sure they were on too long.  Sometimes long runs are good for shows. I miss all of the old school Saturday morning cartoons, and X-Men especially. Yeah, yeah, I know....shush. ;) But, I miss Animaniacs equally as much as I miss Pinky and the Brain, which was their own special spin off cartoon. I used to love to watch those with my dad and I quit enjoying them as much when he died. Now, I wish they would be shown in re-runs more often, though I do catch them when I find them.

I loved Gummy Bears.  Does anyone else remember that show?  I also loved... oh so many of them.  The Ghost and Mrs. Meir (and if anyone knows of any way to watch that, I would offically declair my love for them.), Alice through the Looking Glass (Old disney.  Live action.)  Mr. Boogitie and Bride of Boogity.

I know there's more of them, but for some reason I can't think of them right now.  But I really wish they'd bring back the old shows.  They were so much better then most of the stuff on tv today.

Gummy Bears, bouncin' here and there and everywhere! That and smurfs were my young childhood counseling.

Also, I feel like one of five people who remember the old live action Alice movie.

I loved Gummy Bears, but I never got to watch a full episode because it started before I got home from school. I also really liked Bruno the Kid (there was a villain named Cuscus, which still makes me laugh).

To those who brought up the old Alice Through the Looking Glass, I want to thank you for reminding me of one of the Nightmare Fuel scenes from my childhood.

Not really scary now that I'm grown, but at the time, whew....

Yeah, that was so scary when I was young.

Growing up, I loved X-Men, TMNT, Animaniacs, He-Man, Dino-Riders... I was a regular young boy.  I also did enjoy Gummy Bears.

I remember the Gummy Bears tune, but I have no recollection of the actual show. I really liked watching Out of This World. You know where the girl was part alien and part human and could stop time. I've always wanted to stop time. Wouldn't that be awesome. You wake up to your alarm, still tired, you stop time and sleep till you are done. Basically, I want Hiro's ability. Then I could always travel through space in an instant to see my family, and never have to pay for airfare. It would be wonderful!

now I feel old - especially when people say "childhood" and then talk about the Fox network, which was born AFTER my childhood.

Ok, favorite show from childhood. If we go back to CHILDhood and not TEENhood, I would have to say StarBlazers, Hogan's Heros, Happy Days, the Rifleman, Three's Company, Battlestar Galactica

Teenhood: A-Team, Knight Rider, Spencer for Hire, MacGuyver, Star Trek (Original, in repeats of course) - of course, back then we only had 3 networks to choose from, and some syndicated stuff on the 2 or 3 local fuzzy UHF stations.

My aunt loved that show, but I think it was largely due to the fact that she had a huge crush on Richard Dean Anderson. ;)

You know....for some reason I have never seen an episode of MacGyver. My parents never watched it and I was never introduced to it. So I am lacking a lot of culture.

(I have a similar cultural void when it comes to James Bond....never seen a single Bond movie.)

On my mission in Portugal I had the opportunity to see MacGyver dubbed into Spanish, broadcast from Spain.  It was bizarre to hear the deep Castillian accent coming from Macgyver.

Yeah I missed the whole MacGyver thing. Never seen it.

The A-Team is a differnt story thoug. Oh man was that show awesome. "Have a glass of milk"

My mom would watch MacGyver when I was younger. I'm pretty sure I liked the show, but that was probably over 15 years ago, so I can't be sure....

I don't think I've seen most of the shows already mentioned....I watched shows like Growing Pains, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles....And I'm embarrased to admit that for a time I was a fan of Power Rangers (although, to give me some credit, I was only 6 when it came out....). And then there was a sci-fi called Sliders that my bros and I would watch all the time. It was cool...

Ah, yes, power rangers.  Puts me in the mind of really hot days in vegas and pogs.  Did everyone else do pogs?  (And does anyone else still have some of their pogs.  I still have like all of the collectable power ranger ones)

I remember pogs. The last time I was home, my sister and I were looking for my brother's pog collection...We couldn't find it, which was sad. I think he gave them away or something...the hoser.

OMG POGS!

I used to have the Pog Maker Machine thingy. I'd make hundreds of Pogs from pictures in my Nintendo Power magazines. Sadly I have no clue what happened to all of them.  :(

Can't touch my Elf deck. Wellwisher FTW.

Had four of those babies, along with an enchantment that let me untap them and tap them again in the same round, as well as four special land enchantments that let me do the same thing. Yeah, I won by just having 200+ life and the other person ran out of cards.  :D

Ahhh Magic. I had never seen magic until I was like 19 and two of my friends at the time were players. They showed me how to play and it was interesting for about a week. Then I went back to not playing again.

Pogs were sweet. I had some sweet slammers. That was back when yo-yos made a come back for a while. What about those sweet slap bracelets that were made out of metal and could slice you if the cover came off. Good times.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles FTW. I at this very moment have the theme song as my ring tone. Oh the memories Splinter, Shredder, Krang, Beebop, Rocksteady, Backster Stockman, The Neutrinos, Casey Jones, April O'Neil, The Foot Clan, Dimension X, The TetraDome, Pizza, Sewerskates. Sorry about that I could go on for days.

OH MY GOSH! I remember those! Totally forgot about them until just now...Wow. I liked straightening them out...or at least trying to get them to go straight for a time...and then they'd snap back and smack my fingers really hard...Painful. But fun....

I have fond memories of Skip-It, Rock'em Sock'em Robots and there was another toy I can't remember the name of. It was three sticks, you held two of the sticks and had to dance the third stick around between them.

Indo boards are sweet. I have almost a complete lack of balance but I can do it fairly well. the problem is that if you slip up you go down hard. Its great to pull out when you and your friends are drinking. ;D You can just sit back and watch the show.

You know, I can understand someone who is sober thinking that people who are drinking are boring. I have been out with people who are drinking while I wasn't and I had similar feelings. Congrats on the 10 years, that's a big thing. I don't know. . . drinking isn't needed but it is a welcome relief sometimes. Its not a relief in the manner of getting drunk to forget about things. Its a relief in the way of providing a more loose environment to enjoy yourself and the company of others. I know that sounds cheap but its true. I enjoy having a couple of drinks with friends while watching movies or playing darts or whatever. I don't like getting drunk all the time because I like to be in control of myself but having a couple every now and then can be a good time. Now on occasion I do like to get drunk. Those are the times that are few and far between. They are also a lot of fun.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: mtlhddoc2 on January 02, 2009, 06:43:23 PM
Thanks for the congrats...  wasnt really that difficult for me. I had just had enough on Dec. 22, 1998 and never drank again. No AA or anything like that. Just, thats it, Im done. LOL

I too, like to "relax" with a couple now and again, but for me now, it is near beer (like O'Doul's) - there are other things besides the alcohol in beer and wine which help produce the calming effect. And the non-alcoholic versions do that job well enough.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!

Might just be my personality, but I find it easy enough to relax and have a good time in a crowd without drinking, assuming I speak their language.

Same.

Mostly (from watching people I've known) drinking seems to be a social crutch.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: GreenMonsta on January 05, 2009, 05:45:31 PM
I can see how it could be viewed in that manner. I know a lot of people who are not very sociable unless they are intoxicated. Unfortunately in that case you are correct. I personally enjoy partaking in an alcoholic beverage from time to time. Not for a crutch but for the sheer enjoyment.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!

I always thought it was a little sad how many young teenagers took pleasure in getting drunk when I was little. I remember this time I was eating in a restaurant with my family, and these two teenagers were boasting about how drunk they were last night. And they were telling this other kid he should try it, and he looked really uncomfortable and I felt bad for him. I hope he didn't give in.

Not that there's anything wrong with drinking. But when you're 15 and you're boasting about getting drunk…that's different.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: mtlhddoc2 on January 07, 2009, 02:12:28 AM
no different than 40 year olds boasting about it either Shaggy, having a few drinks and a good time is one thing, getting loaded and passing out is another and thinking you are "cool" for doing so is just stupid, no matter what age you are.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!

Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: Shaggy on January 07, 2009, 04:04:50 PM
I am very aware of that fact. I was never denying the stupidity of it. But there are certain decisions and actions that should be for adults only. Drinking heavily at such an early age (15!) can effectively ruin your life. You can get into trouble with the police, you can get a record, your grades can stop droppin…. Oftentimes, they don't know exactly what they're getting into. So, yes, I think it is sadder seeing teenagers drown themselves in alcohol.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: mtlhddoc2 on January 07, 2009, 04:55:25 PM
As a teenage alcoholic myself, I dont think it is sadder, sad, yes, sadder? no. Sadder is that same teen in 25 years doing the same damn thing he did in high school. I have an old classmate, a drinking buddy if you will, who is still the same disaster of a erson she was back then. Which is sadder, me, drunk at 15, but made something of my life, or her, drunk at 40, having made nothing of her life and still acting like a teen?
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: Shaggy on January 07, 2009, 05:15:21 PM
If you look at my first post on this thread, you'll see my point was more about the boasting of getting drunk than the actual getting of drunkness (?) itself. There are those who get drunk to raise their social status, or to be able to brag about doing something 'bad.' That is sad. That is my point. That is not what you are talking about.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: GreenMonsta on January 07, 2009, 06:00:37 PM
The thing about that Shaggy is that threads tend to "evolve". There is a certain ebb and flow to a forum. Notice that your original post outlined the fact that bragging was the problem but then later you posted that it was sadder and he just responded to your new post.

I don't see a problem with drinking and we have to realize that kids are going to do it. Like mtlhddoc2 said, as long as there is a limit and the person can function and be successful then there isn't an issue. Technically a person isn't an addict unless the addiction has adverse effects on their life. So I could go home and get drunk every night as long as doing so didn't effect my job or life style.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: Shaggy on January 07, 2009, 06:03:24 PM
I know, I've noticed.

That's actually not true–if you have an average of more than two alcoholic drinks a night for a week, you are a legal alcoholic.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: GreenMonsta on January 07, 2009, 06:36:27 PM
Ahh but you see that I didn't say alcoholic. I said addict. Just because someone said that having two alcoholic beverages a day for a week makes them something negative then what would people do if the same rule applied to coffee. I mean there are a lot of coffee addicts out there and it does contain an addictive drug (caffeine). I mean if you look at it, two drinks a day could be consumed during an evening meal and have no effect on the drinker, and a drink of wine is supposed to be healthy so I don't see what the "legal" definition has to do with anything.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: Shaggy on January 07, 2009, 06:42:43 PM
(1) An alcoholic is, essentially, an adddict of alcohol. (2) It's MORE than two per day in a week. (3) Did I say it was something negative? No, but  you did. (4) See number 2. (5) It may be healthy in some ways, but potentially damaging in others. (6) You don't see what the "legal definition" has to do with anything? Well, in cases of law, evidence that proves someone an alcoholic can be extremely useful, and maybe even turn the direction the case is going. (7) And since the fact that certain peoples are alcoholics is almost always taken into account in a court of law (see number 6), it obviously does have an effect on a person.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: little wilson on January 07, 2009, 08:00:52 PM
I hate to do definitions, but Monsta, an addiction doesn't necessarily carry with it adverse effects. Here's the definition(s):

To cause to become physiologically or psychologically dependent on a habit-forming substance

or

An individual who has developed physiologic or psychologic dependence on a chemical such as alcohol or other drugs

or

A person with an uncontrollable urge or habit for a drug or situation

And I'll stop right there, because 3 should be enough. But I could copy/paste more. There are plenty available.  You'll notice that no where in ANY of those definitions does it say that the addiction is harmful. Some addictions are harmful, like alcohol, but some are totally innocent, like say a chocolate addict (me).

Addict to me means anyone who would have a problem breaking free of a substance, whether that substance is alcohol, nicotine, chocolate, or a particular flavor of ben and jerry's ice cream. And if you're wondering, yes, it IS possible to become addicted to certain flavors of ben & jerry's. I succeeded with Half-Baked. It was delicious. And very unhealthy.....

And I think this thread just evolved a little further.  :P

Thank you so much. Monsta–You see, that the definition of 'addiction' never mentions it being harmful. However, the common view of the populace is that alcohol addiction is harmful. Do you know why? Because it is.  Never doubt the power of alcohol addiction.

Oh I am not saying that addiction is a good thing especially when it comes to alcohol. And thanks wilson by the way. I can count on you to set me straight whenever I stray. I was saying that the "legal definition" provided by Shaggy was flimsy and didn't have much ground. I know addictions aren't always negative. Alcoholism is negative though. And if that's all it takes to be an alcoholic then I think its sad.

I am however proud of both Shaggy and his parents. For some reason this seventh or eighth grader has a firm grasp on alcohol and that's a really good thing. Good for you man. Don't let your views completely drive you away from experiences later in life but its good to see you are a smart person and I'm sure you will deal with those decisions correctly.

Oh…then I guess we were sorta saying similar things all along…although this thread has changed so much I don't really know. And just so you know, I wasn't providing the "legal definition" of addiction–just of an alcoholic.

Thanks. (seventh) Yeah, my parents are pretty firm about that thing–my mom had a cousin who died in his early 30s from alcohol/drug overdose. So they're pretty big on that.
And I'll take your advice to heart. I've been shown too many times that often what I've been taught is simply from one perspective. And I am not going to avoid alcohol as an adult–I'll just be conscious of how much I take in. Thanks again.

Wow we really took over this thread lol.

Haha niceee. Would that be irony? I think it would be but not really sure….

Hey does anyone know how to get a picture to go next to your name thing? I know there's a slot in your profile but I don't know how to put a picture there….

Ok, I feel I need to chime in here. Addict, alcoholic, legal definitions, yadda yadda.

Anyway, even though I said I was a teenage alcoholic, I am not an alcoholic, nor was I ever. I only fit the "book" definition of an alcoholic accoriding to AA.

during my early to mid 20s, I drank every day, all day. I got drunk every single night. I would put vodka in my coffee to wake up. Then one day, I decided I had had enough and quit. I never had any urges to drink, and even the same DAY I quit, I went to a bar and did not drink, yet they still call me an alcoholic and try to say "oh, you will always be one, etc etc." It is a bunch of bull. I am not, and never was, addicted to alcohol, even though I was barely sober for a day for nearly 5 years.

I am however, a caffeine addict, and a nicotine addict.

dont believe the rhetoric. An addict is someone who cannot quit on their own. No more, no less.

Dead on! Sounds like your in my head. I've done my share of drinking in the past and to be honest I still drink almost every weekend. I'm currently 23 and I enjoy going out to bars and drinking and hanging out with friends and drinking. The thing is that I don't have to drink. I do drink fairly often and some might consider me an alcoholic but to me I'm just enjoying things that I like. On the other hand I am also a caffeine and nicotine addict. Those ones are though not to have urges for.

I think you're right, mtlhddoc2. Lol your definition is better than all that dictionary crap.

(now would be a good time to put in my own two cents but I'm only 12 so my two cents would be like I once dipped my pinky in my mom's glass of red wine and that sounds really pathetic typed up)

Yes, that was kind of what my dictionary crap was getting at....And I what I was trying to get at by posting it. I just didn't want to write it out. Felt easier to copy/paste.....I'm lazy like that.

Anyway. Alcoholics. Addicts. Not necessarily the same thing. Can be. But doesn't have to be. As long as you can quit cold turkey, you're not an addict....which actually, I did with the ben & jerry's, so I guess I wasn't an addict. Sad....And it was so fun to say that I was once a B&J's addict...Oh well. At least I'm still a chocolate addict....

And Shaggy, your 2 cents is STILL more than mine would be. I've never tasted a drop of alcohol in my life, and I never plan to either, so....you beat me with the pinky-dip. Congrats (I guess....).

Hehe thanks. For once, the experiences of a 12-year-old boy in an adult-world actually count for something. I should celebrate. Maybe another pinky-dip?  ;D

Take a risk. Make it two. ;)
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!

Honestly Shaggy, dont take the risk until you know you will be able to RESPONSIBLY consume. I was not responsible, I was very immature, and then one day I woke up and realize I had missed about 10 years of my life. I am doing fine now, but I am way behind.

As for wilson: I think you are Mormon right? If so, then it is against the religion to consume alcohol, so your "dryness" is certainly understandable :)

Yes, I am LDS.

And as for the risk....That was a joke about taking two pinky-dips into the wine. Because two pinky-dips of wine is hardly risky.

Exactly. It was meant to be ironic.....Not sure I pulled that off, but I think it's funny....The image in my head makes it even more humorous.

Post by: Shaggy on January 10, 2009, 01:49:46 AM
I think it's funny, too! But then the question is…would I do two pinky-dips in a row with one finger, or use both pinkies and do it at the same time?
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: little wilson on January 10, 2009, 06:15:47 PM
Heck, you could do two pinky-dips with each pinky. Then you could get double the wine....Double the risk.

Go for whichever you want. You could even choose one you know nothing about. I mean, if you're taking a risk with pinky-dips, you may as well take a risk on the wine, too....

And on that note, I'm levelling up with this post.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!

Congratulations! I haven't levelled up in a while; I miss it.  8) What IS an absolver, anyway?ß

You have too leveled up. You've been shooting up in the leveling. It's insane. Your daily average post count is 19. I was the highest before you registered and the highest I ever hit was 17....It's not going to be long at all before you catch up to me.

And an absolver....well. It's a person who grants absolution.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: Shaggy on January 12, 2009, 01:21:42 AM
Haha thanks. Posting is my new hobby. And all I did was start/reply to a bunch of threads, and then everyday I check my unread replies to my posts and I have a ton and I respond to each one, sometimes they respond back, and I end up with anywher efrom 10 to 25 posts a day. It works pretty well. (Then again, I'm just in 7th grade, so I can make the time to do that.  8))

Lol of course!

And…just a slight correction…my average is 22.909 per day :D

So if you're an Absolver at Level 16, what class are you training in?

Stop double posting, please.

(There are a few limited contexts where double-posting may be appropriate, such as when several weeks have passed from the previous post and you have something new and useful to add, or such like, but generally you're better off using the "modify" button.)
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!

Ummmm is double posting when you post two things in a thread one after another?

Yes.  (Did you read the FAQ?)
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!

Yes, but I forgot most of it.

Sorry, I didn't realize I was double-posting. I'll take care not to in the future.
Title: Re: Nostalgia Alert!!!
Post by: little wilson on January 12, 2009, 08:07:02 PM
I double-posted on the Stupid Titles thread yesterday....but that was only because I leveled up and I didn't really want to modify the previous post, since it was entirely different.....And I wanted to vent about my stupid title....

Anyway. Your post count is now over 20 (as in, decimals over 20, not digits). I think I found more time to post when I was in school than out too. 'Cause now I'm working so I'm not home as much. It's sad.

And my class is a Student of Light Magic. You can check that by going to a person's profile (click on their name). I'll be Medic and a Healer sometime soon...I can't remember which is first and I'm too lazy to pull up the Titles file on my flash drive so...yeah.

I'm actually doing fine in school, so I can afford it. And I find it…refreshing…to talk to intelligent people with real thoughts and feelings. Not that there aren't many in my school (kind of the opposite), but in my grade, most of the people I have classes with aren't exactly like that…some of them, anyway.

OH!

Perfect topic.. Exelent.
This is difficult for me, I dont remember the name of the "show" but ill try;
There was these 4 characters.
One was princess, in Pink! Then one Otaku(Blue). One fatty(green and liked monsters.). And KOGO! (red hero of ages!)
They croused space with their superawesome battleship and utterly-destroyed a bunch of stuff.
Its Anime! Love at first sight.

Bumbibjörnarna. Bouncing the forest with their speed-potions.
Nallepuh, Håning-bear and sad-Ior;( and kristoffer-robbin!
Turtles.Luftens hjältar.Robbin hood.Mowgli!

I dont expect you to go to wikipedia and look it up for me. Ive tried!

Gummy Bears, The New Adventures of Johnny Quest, and Wishbone.  I loved those shows.  Invader Zim, too, but I still watch that on DVD sometimes.  hehe.
