Title: Holiday Names
Post by: Nessa on October 22, 2008, 03:07:06 AM
For those of you new to the forums, us regular forum-goers like to mix things up and bit and try to be clever with our nicknames around the holidays.

http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=11.0 (last post info).

Spriggan usually has a Christmas name contest (http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?board=24.0) every year, where people vote and the winner gets an award.

And while I know it's too late really to have a Halloween contest, I came up with a good one this year, I think! (Christmas always stumps me... dunno why)

You know Ness I didn't even realize that you could alter you handle. That is very cool. I may try to come up with a witty name for halloween even though it is so close, it should be fun ;D

You know I can't see why we couldn't include Halloween, thanksgiving in the Holiday award.  I'll have to figure out how we want to keep track of the older names as we get closer to to December or we can just have a Halloween one in addition to the Christmas Hanuka Kwanzaa time.

I'm fine with either.

That's 'Christmanuzaa'. ;)

I really like the idea of the name contest...I think I have a tough one to work with though....

I'm thinking one award for a name you're currently using, it's too much trouble to remember past names. Just one at Christmas would be fine, I'm thinking.

I think this new name of mine is much better than "Lord Chaos" for the Halloween spirit.

ah, but the way I understand it is to make it so people can still recognize you. Without the profile pic I would've had no idea it was you; you know everyone ignores the numbers  :P

That just means I have the ability for more subterfuge, something others don't get :P

Though, Nessa's name of WickedNess is quite frankly the most awesome holiday name change possible. Someone should make her a trophy. It's THAT good.

Brownie Points for you!

Of course, you can't really use those points for anything, and they are just in my head but still.

Unfortunately, my name doesn't lend itself to truly exquisite adaptation terribly well.  Or maybe I'm just not creative.

Well, you could try to make another field like Fell Points, only Brownie Points.

That name is far superior to "Lord Chaos". At least yours is Halloween-y.

I believe, historically, there's only been one for Christmas.  But we have fun every season, all the same.

The only thing I could come up for mind was too silly, and I couldn't find a good representative picture. If I can locate or make something interesting I will change it.

Hey Paper any reference to The Shredder is welcome in my book. Also now that I changed my name I dont even know if I will change it back until spring, I mean the redsox are done for the season. Maybe I'll think of something else idk.

I was looking for an interesting picture of an actual Paper Shredder and wandered by this and thought it was too beautiful. Usually if I can make myself laugh, I call it a win. Thanks for the kudos =).

Title: Re: Holiday Names
Post by: The Jade Knight on October 29, 2008, 11:53:11 PM
As far as I recall, pictures have never counted for anything directly in the contests, so the picture, as Nessa points out, is purely optional.  But lots of fun.
Title: Re: Holiday Names

Ah, well. I do like good clean fun. But if I changed my avatar, it would take an inordinate amount of my time to find the old one again (even though I drew it and its on my website...somewhere).

Mostly though, I'm just plain lazy . :D

Testing the new user name. Couldn't really think of anything too holiday related, was a pain trying to find a Thanksgiving food that started with a K lol.
Title: Re: Holiday Names
Post by: MrPaperCamel on November 02, 2008, 08:41:59 AM
Kettle Corn and Klondike Bar are the only others I could think of. You could be a rebel and spell cranberry with a K.
Title: Re: Holiday Names
Post by: CthulhuKefka on November 02, 2008, 08:45:47 AM
That's true, but then I'd have to find something for C. Well, Corn obviously, but I like CranberryCthulhu, it has a ring to it.  ;) Plus Kiwi + Kefka is just a hilarious mental image for those familiar with the character.
Title: Re: Holiday Names

Kefka and Monsta have come up with some interesting Turkey-Day names. Wish I could figure out something to do for myself. I am sure some random bit of insanity will hit me at the most random point in time.

The Green Bean Casserole is definitely a highlight for me at Thanksgiving. Is NecroCasserole to morbid for ya?

Paper that name is classic.

Necro how could you dare start your name with the color Green. I mean just because I dropped it for the holidays doesnt mean you can jump in my grave. . . . .

Kidding, your name is much more clever than mine and I like it. I also like the recognition when you made it. Thanks for the consideration guy.

A lot of good names this year... I guess I didn't much notice last year's thanksgiving names, but then again - that's when I was ghosting around on the boards. GreenNecroBeanCasserole, Mr. Paperhandturkey, and CranberryCthulu are all uber awesome.

Anyone got their Christmas names picked out yet?

I am wondering though: What adjective do you guys think Ness is going to use? I'm personally betting on Cheerful, but I don't claim to be as witty and cunning as a Mod. [obvious attempt at brownie points]

Jade you are the man. I only wish my holiday names could be more original, with a name like GreenMonsta they always seem unimaginative.

I used to feel like that.  I think I was "The Silent Knight" last year...

Ok folks here's the rules.

PM me with your favorite 3 names by the 27th, then I'll add up all the nominations and the top five will go on to a poll where everyone can vote once.  I'll close the poll the 3rd of January.

Wow, I didn't realize there were so many elfish names, I'll have to come up with something new.  It isnt too late is it?

EDIT:
Well, I changed it anyways.  This one is far better.  I hope I'm still in time.

More poking of Spriggan may be necessary.  That's just how we do things here, you know.  That and the occasional sharp elbow.

it's added, there are 6 because we had a 3-way tie for one of the slots.

Note: Only admins (and maybe mods) can see the results while the poll is open so if you can see the results don't spoil it--part of the fun is not knowing until the poll closes.

This might be the first time I've made the final cut.  I knew I'd picked a good name this time.

Ok so I had a little question. Now seeing how the holidays are now over and this vote concludes tonight, does this end the name changing? I for one will be changing my name again for St. Patricks day but that's not for over two months and I don't really plan on changing it for Valentines day next month. Plus after St Patricks day comes and goes it will be time for baseball season again and I wont have a problem going back to the old reliable GreenMonsta once again.

I do not celebrate Hallmark Holidays, but I do celebrate the most important one of the year. Bring on the Black and Tans!

Congratulations, Jade!

I think what I especially liked about your name, aside from its originality and appropriateness, was that it made me think of chess knights.

I didn't get to vote (I missed it) but if I had I would've voted for you, Chestknight. Very original.

Oh. Do most people have two names here?

we had a silly name contest recently, so a lot of the names you see around the forum are only temporary. I've already changed mine back to normal, but some are still using their Christmas/Holiday names because of the contest.

Oh. Do most people have two names here?

Sort of.  It's a tradition to change one's regular username (such as Jade Knight) into a holiday-appropriate version (such as The Roasting Chestknight).  The goal is to come up with something clever and unique, but still recognizable to those who know you under your regular username.

EDIT: Loud G beat me to it.

Congrats, Jade! It's a good name. (Though I voted for Mr. Paper, myself. That name just made me laugh every time I saw it.)

I'm surprised Santooklaus got so many votes. Glad people liked it!

I almost couldn't choose who to vote for. There were four on there that I loved. I ended up voting for Ook, simply because I remember when I first saw the name, I busted up laughing and said, "That is clever!"....

Anyway, Congrats, Jade. That win was well-deserved.

Thanks =). Was the only real goal I had.

I actually voted for you because I was immensely amused by the variation on your name. Very witty and clever.
