I haven't done this for a few years and I'm tempted to this year. I even have a project I'm working on! So. Count me in! (for now)

Did you finish when you competed?

You know, I may give this a shot. I am notorious for taking FOREVER to finish something. Just ask my writing group. Besides, I need to hone my "outlining" skills. Maybe I'll give this a shot....

I'm thinking I will do it this year. I've been slacking on my novel for far too long, so this gives me a good excuse to make a lot of progress.

The last time I did it, yep I completed the 40k words (if I remember correctly, that was the requirement the year i did it).

Got any ideas?  is your story drama?  fantasy? action? humor? A dramatically humorous action-fantasy?

I gots me an epic fantasy planned.  I have the four main POV characters planned out, along with the major plot points with their stories, as well as the magic system all done.  The important worldbuilding is done, but I need to put more potential twists in it, along with finalize names.  oh well.

I like my world.  all of the mountains and stuff are actually the skeletons of gigantic extinct animals called Colossi, who figure a lot in the religion of the area.  The imperial city-state capital, in all of it's size, can't completely fill a Colossus' ribcage, even with its suburbs and shantytowns.  The colossi also figure into the magic, but only in a minor role.

I like my magic too. To my knowledge, it's not very close to any magic system I've read.  Although there's one that has similar principles to it.

I'm working on an Arthurian legend piece.  Placed after the death of King Arthur in the world of the dead.  Following Arthur on his way to The Hall of Heroes or something.  What would his journey be like?
I have most of it plotted out and some dialogue but haven't actually started writing it yet.  Which seems to work out with this site.  Good luck. ;D

“You forgive me, my People may forgive me, God ‘Himself’ could forgive me, but I will Not!” Arthur shouted, throwing the sword into the lake.  His eyes black, dead; he turned to her muttering,” The dead never forgive, nor forget.  So begins my Curse.

I would really love have a go at this NaNoWriMo, and I've got a cool idea for a story (Its an epic fantasy with an unusual twist on the 'prophesied hero' concept), but I'm afraid that, at the rate I write, I'd have to drop out of college and quit my job if I wanted to get it done. . . bummer. . .

You know, I've always said to myself that I was going to write a novel but I never take the time to sit down and actually write it. So thank you for making this thread, because it reminded me of Nanowrimo and I signed up this year. Hopefully being signed up for it will actually make me start writing.

I'm doing this again this year. I did it last year and managed to make the 50,000 word goal. It's a lot of work, but I think it's worth it.

As with last year I'll make an award and give it to anyone that completes NANOWRIMO.

42 has the 2007 trophy with the award next to his avatar (I need to re-upload the image which I'll do sometime this week), the 2008 will look the same but with 2008.

I was interested in attempting this and so I tried. I got about one thousands words down I took a read threw and almost vomitted at the level of my writing skills. I then proceeded to throw away the thousand word waste of paper and got back to reading.

Sweet, I'm totally there!  Well I'll give it a shot anyway.  The reason I'm doing it is because I have this annoying habit of never finishing what I start.

I considered doing it but I'm so close to finishing my first book as it is...  :-\

I'll do it next year, when I have another book under my belt and my improvement is more than subtle, then I'll branch out and try a sci-fi. :D

We don't post our stories here. We merely report our progress (honor system kind of a thing). It's up to you to post it or offer to email it to people if you want feedback. Since it's a NaNoWriMo, I don't think any of us expect it to be publishable....

elmandr1,  from what I was told at our meet an greet with other NaNoWriMo's was that nothing is published or even looked at.  It's just about numbers and finishing your goals.  If you think your story is worth persuing after that, then continue onto your 2nd draft and whatnot.  That and they tell you how to scramble the words around when you upload into sys. to confirm your word count.  After that they delete it themselves.  Hope that helps you to join.

Post by: Wolfstar on October 23, 2008, 05:42:16 AM
I've done this the past few years, and I have to say that it is an incredible experience.

I started out in 2006 as someone that has fallen in the trap of developing the same world and story for so long that all other ideas had been more or less pushed to the side.  October came, and I heard about NaNoWriMo from a friend that had done it the year previous.  She challenged me, and me being me, I couldn't back down.  So I looked through my 'Ideas on Hold' notebook to see what I should pull out.  I thought that since the spirit of NaNoWriMo was to write something quickly and feel the flow of an evolving story, I would pick an idea that was fairly vague.

So I selected my host of characters, which at this point only included the protagonists (The Guardians of Tralos), the king, and a few prototype dark mage types and that my keyword themes were "Conspiracy" and "Treason" (which helped spawn the title, The Tralos Conspiracy).  As I wrote, the plot unfolded into a whole lot more than I thought it would be, and found that by the time I had reached the end, something completely different had come out of it.  The "Conspiracy" and "Treason" were still there, but neither were what I thought they would be, and the story was left, by novel's end, unfinished.  Oh, and it was a NaNoWriMo victory, too.

I did it again in 2007, hitting the 50k word line early, but this one did not have the same surprise twist for me that the previous year had.  Part of it was that I decided to go with the sequel to The Tralos Conspiracy, which is The Tralos Conflict.  I'm actually still putting the finishing touches on this one at around 100k words, so it's short, but since my writing is still developing, I figure that these drafts will serve mostly as a guide to when I can come back and write them 'for real' (for fun, of course... this is merely a hobby for me).

This year... I'm not sure if I will be able to hit the mark, but I'm going to try.  When the Tralos Conspiracy and Tralos Conflict failed to be resolved in two books, I fell into the 'trilogy trap,' so with a little luck, I can finish the story and score a third NaNoWriMo victory with The Tralos Crisis.

Sorry for the length... I didn't intend to go off on this tangent when I first started this post.

I've signed up and I've got a story idea that has been brewing in my mind, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to do it for time reasons. I know, I know...slacker. I am. I really want to write the ~2200 words a day that it would take to finish, but I'm not sure I'll be able to. I mean, on a good day, I'm able to bang out around 6k. But then I'm sometimes dry for a week or so after that. :D

Basically, I  just need to do it. We'll see :)

Wait, i don't understand, does everyone already have their stuff written, or will they start from scratch tomorrow? I began writing mine because i thought it was a competition of how much words you could fit in....

Well, i guess that doesn't make much sense either, does it?

You have to do all of your writing in November for it to count. And it's not really a competition against other people, so much as a race against time to get to the 50,000 word mark.

Edit:  Now at 605 words and counting.  Slowly but surely, or whatever.

Doing the everyday goal is hard. I usually only write 2 days of about 3k words every week. I can already tell this is going to be a challenge (/cries)

So my question is this: Do we actually have to finish the book, or just get to that 50k marker?

Also: current count (working on today's work currently) around 900.

No.  You don't have to finish, the goal is 50k by Nov. 30th.  If your not done with your novel (but hit the word count goal) its up to you if you want to continue on with it ,or not.

Hit 4,800.  Now I can go to bed.

Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month 2008
Post by: Nessa on November 03, 2008, 08:56:03 PM
Ya, Sigyn, I'm not even bothering with that. I don't want to use it. But then, technically, I'm not following the rules. I started a story already, with about 20k words, and am working on that, keeping track of the words I've been writing since Nov. 1. I'm to 5600. So, by the time the month is over, I should have about 70k words in my novel, which is not too far from finishing length. Which means I would have written it in two months. Woooo. Then will come the edits (sigh)

I'm at 4072, doing 2000 a day and getting a couple of days off.  It's not all that hard, so long as you have a good plan and don't care about stupidity.  Heck, I'm still developing my main char's personality as I write it, so when I revise there will be good prose had by all.

I do a couple of things.  One:  I reward myself when I hit my goal for the day.  Two:  When my thoughts scatter and i can't really rein them in.  I stop fighting it and take a break for a couple a minutes.  This seems to help so far, but it's only been 4 days.  Oh, and I've made out a schedule to help keep me on track.  Which I've kept so far:  6,666 for the day, cheers!

Wow u guys are really moving along quite rapidly! I'm inspired! I myself am not officially doing it but I am trying to up the amount I am writing. Unfortunately its hard to tell because the computer I am writing on (not this one) doesn't even have a word count tool. I've had to put it on a flash drive and copy it over just to see how much I've done, and I was surprised and encouraged to see I have about 25,000 words! (didn't start this month) which is about 10,000 more than I thought I had.

It was kind of weird.  While I was writing one part of today's work a song came on my ipod that fit the mood perfectly.  It was really fun, and I think it really helped write that bit out better.  Of course, I also discovered the value of backing up your work.  I unplugged the flash drive I have my book stored on before the program I've been using to write it on was compleately closed, and so it gave me this weird error.  When I plugged my flash drive back in the program said that all of the files were gone.  Thankfully the actual files weren't gone, the program just wasn't reconizing them.  So I'd like to remind everyone to make a backup of your book if you haven't already.

Yeah, AX7 and some others really help me out.  I've also found that with some, they give me little inspirations; just tiny bits that help with dialog, or setting, and sometimes even mood.  Its been great and a lot of fun.  I'm slow, but glad to have signed up for this.  It's pushed me to do what I have never done before... writing, as much as I can, everyday.

I also have a new appreciation to those who do this for a living, wow.  This would be great for me...   if I happened to be any good. :D

Actually, it wouldn't be that hard.  I did the math, and if you only wrote 2k words every day you would have a 200k book in three months.  (Of courses, after that you'd have to do the editing, because that was assuming you just write)  The challange becomes making sure you actually do the work each day.

Also:

Today: 2,118

I'm feeling really good about this right now.  I'm all like "Yeah, maybe I can actually get throught this thing."  (Of course, I was pretty much finishing where I had left off yesterday, and my next big event I don't see coming for a while, so tomorrow is going to be a huge challenge because it's going to be another filler type piece which means I've got to figure out what the heck I can even have happen.)

I’ve hit 15,307.  O-M-G! I thought at one point I was doing good then see that, nope, I’m not.  I’ve really had to break my goals down (going for 25k by the 15th) so I don’t get too discouraged, but it’s been a lot harder than I had thought it could be.  I only have 5-days to get 10k!  2000 might not seem like much but I only have 3-4 hours a day to do it in and I’m avg. 400 wds/hr (Yeah, I don’t type fast) so I’m trying to make up word count on weekends and I don’t know if I’ll make it there at The End. :'(

Ok, now that’s off my chest…  :-[

I’m loven’ it.  This is great, I can’t remember the last time I had this much fun working.  Of course, this could just be from lack of sleep, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.  Now if only I could get paid for it… Ha! ;D

Woah, nicely done.  Both for ending it on such an even number, and for getting out that many words.

Here's my update,

I just wish I could do a bit more for each of my scenes.  I want to build up a big buffer in case I can't write for some reason, but I just can't seem to be able to.  Oh well, maybe when I reach another of my big scenes I'll be able to get into the flow enough to keep it going for a while.

I've gotten sick the past couple days and I'm surprised how it's killed my writing flow. The consant desire to let my mind wander with the cold-medication mind trip is not helping me conserve writing time.

Oh my gosh!!!  I got to the end of my planned work, and was only like 300-500 words away from my goal, so I decided I'd just figure out something to keep the scene going rather trying to start something new.  However, I had to fight the entire time.  I've learned my lesson though: the story wins.  If the scene is done, then move on.

Although, because of it, I did get to write this cool dream scene, which gave me a whole bunch extra, so now I'm not quite sure.  Maybe we might have both won...  :-\

It is great, now all I have to do is count down instead of up, the numbers are not quite as discouraging that way.  I was in the middle-end when I hit my goal.  I decided to stop when I noticed just how bad it was getting (and this was while I was in the middle of writing it) and watch my show and post a bit before bed.

Just over 31,000.  I'm not exactly sure as I've been doing a lot of writing on paper.  It's a lot faster for me!  Maybe I can convince my wife help me transcribe it, since she types like 400 word/min.  It's amazing to watch!

That is insane.

They say on the offical website that if you hand write everything, and have a second person vouch that your document is the correct lengeth you can use dummy text to be the correct length to submit.  So you don't even really need to transcribe it (at least, not right at the moment)

Just passed 40k. Into the home stretch.

Unfortunately, It looks as though I'll only finish about half of what I have outlined. It looks like I'll have some writing to do in December.

And it's possible to write 5k a day for those who haven't started yet. I just break it down to 100 words every few minutes. Usually I pick put on some music  and say to myself "I'm go to write about this description or this action or this character dialogue before the end of the this song." It usually works out. 100 words is only about 8-10 sentences.

Congrats 42!  You're totally going to have to tell us when you finally hit the end.

And don't feel bad.  I don't think I'll be done for another two months if I keep going the way I am.  See, I didn't realize you were supposed to have everything done by the end of the month.  I thought you were just supposed to be 50k words in.

Woohoo! 33,444 words! I'm especially excited because I didn't think I was going to get any writing today, but my husband encouraged me, and I did it!  And I must be tired because I'm ending every sentence with an exclamation point!  At least I didn't do that in my story!
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month 2008
Post by: Necroben on November 20, 2008, 05:57:24 AM
Actually, I think that is the goal, just 50k words.  If you keep going great, but I think its just about motivating people to write.  Congrat's 42.

I'm now around 36k.  I've stopped typing altogether, its so much faster for me to just write it out on paper.  otherwise I won't make it at the end.  I'll have to get my ML to review what I do by hand to get approved--I just have to buy him a cup of coffee, I think.

lol, ThankSigyn, great job!

Congrats Sigyn, sometimes the hardest thing is to simply sit down and take the time to write.

Today: Unknown the exact number (see below for why)
Total according to Nanowrimo.com: 40,010

I'm so happy they have their offical system available to check our numbers.  It's so much easier then me trying to copy and paste my file with all my qualifying text into ywriter, and then from there type in the number.  Plus, then I know for sure if I need to add text or not, rather then going "well, I hope my program is close to theirs."

I had like 39,929 (or some such) and I was like "I can totally write those last 80-something words" and set off to edit a few scenes until I got over 40k.  Now I just have five more days and I'll be offically green!  :D

I think in theory you might be suppposed to produce a finished work, but the major emphasis is definitely on getting those 50k words.

I'm totally bending the rules. I have 40,000 words already, and even if I make the NaNo goal and hit 90,000 words I probably still won't be done. I'm guessing my MS will end up around 120k.

I discovered today that writing is totally theraputic.  I was having a really stressful day, to the point where I was really considering just not writing today.  But I knew I'd regret it if I didn't.  So I sat down to pound it out, no matter how bad it ended up being and came up with some of my best work (I think).  I also felt tons better by the end of it.  It was just a great little reminder of why I love writing.

Haha, I'm the other way around. The screen does bad things to the quality of my writing. Plus, I can take a pencil and paper anywhere. Not so my desktop computer...

I actually have kind-of noticed this as well.  When I am writing with pencil and paper, I tend to just write instead of constantly scrutinizing every single thing I type out.  When I eventually transfer it to the computer, it ends up in a much sleeker form then it would have if I just typed is straight through.  During the transfer process, you can add the little things that you missed and you catch a lot of your mistakes.  I think it also allows for your voice to come through a bit more.

It might just be me, though.  :P

On another note, I really wish I participated this year.  Time is running a bit for me as of now, though.  Next year is definitely a go, though.

EDIT: In reality, I have written a good 25k words this month, but they are either replies to other people's fiction, or just short stories.  I wrote one thing that's about 15k, but, meh.

Like I said, next year is a go.

It's sad....I was honestly looking forward to this, and then I pretty much died before the month even really began.....I've lost almost all interest in the book, yet I've gained a lot of interest in an idea I conceived late last week....which puts my ideas up to 11, and my finished products still at 0...I'm horrible at this.

I think I started well, but then all hell broke loose. :( I haven't even cleared 10K.  :'(

I did, however, learn that 2K per day is possible for me (assuming all hell doesn't break loose. :P ) So overall a good experience for me; I just don't think I'll be able to get out 40K in a few days. Especially when I have places I need to be most of those days.  :-\

Heheh. I'm still planning on trying to churn out as much of those 40k words (okay, 38k) left as I can. I have places to be most of those days too... But Saturday should be good. Saturday I'm off. ::)

Wow I am really bookin' it! I hit upwards of 4000 today and I might not even have stopped yet!! I've still got almost 7000 words I need to write, so actually finishing all 50k is impossible, but hey. I am racing like a madman and it is so much fun!!

I made it!  I finished enough to reach the goal this morning, and was able to confirm it on the NaNo site tonight.  51,637 is my official word count, and that may go slightly higher if I actually complete the novel tonight or tomorrow (I've still got two or three chapters left).

Good luck to everyone else that is working overtime to finish up.  You can do it!

Congratulations!

...

At this point, I think I've just resigned myself to enjoying success vicariously, through everyone else.

That doesn't mean I'm not still writing. Only 27695 words to go!

(Hah...)

Only 27695 words to go!

Sweet! You're almost halfway there!....And that "enjoying success vicariously" won't be experienced for me, I'm afraid....I'm sorry. If I'd known you were going to depend on vicarious success, I might've tried a bit harder to complete NaNo.  Now I kind of feel bad (not really). :P

You should be sorry! You should have tried harder! *waves fist*

The halfway point creeps ever closer. I've only 26231 words left to meet the deadline.

This is so encouraging. ::)

Really? You wrote over 1,000 words just in the last hour?...Man.....That disappoints me (simply because I can't focus long enough to write that much--it's horrible), but good job! Way to stay focused! If only I could do that.....I swear, when I'm on my computer, I'm ADD or something....
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month 2008
Post by: Silk on November 30, 2008, 07:39:07 AM
I usually am too! Today's actually the first time I've ever really tried writing massive amounts on a screen (I've probably written about 8000 words today if you count the "2am before I went to bed stuff, which for me is pretty massive) because I'm HORRIBLY ADD when computers are around. (I mean, I'm here, aren't I?)

This is actually fun though. I'm enjoying this retardedly fast-paced clip. If I can just figure out what to write next I might still hit the halfway point by midnight!!

Stupid plot holes. *waves fist*
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month 2008
Post by: little wilson on November 30, 2008, 07:45:39 AM
Wait. There's still another day of writing, isn't there? It's not officially over until tomorrow, I thought.....Not that it really matters for me. There's absolutely no way I'm hitting even 25k by tomorrow, but I might try to hit at least 12k....maybe 15. I think 15 might be do-able....

And I know! The internet is addicting. This site is addicting. It deserves it's name. It's a huge time-waster, yet I can't seem to tear myself away from it. I'm supposed to be reading The Count of Monte Cristo, because I need to have it completely read by Thursday  for one of my classes, and I'm only on page 25. I actually think it's good so far, yet I can't stay focused on reading it, because I keep coming back here. It's bad. It's really, really bad!
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month 2008
Post by: Silk on November 30, 2008, 07:49:13 AM
Yup, midnight tomorrow. You should totally go for the 15k! Every word you write for NaNo is one you wouldn't have written otherwise. I think this sorta thing is very valuable even if you don't "win". (She says, trying to console herself.)

Haha, I have that problem with Internet forums too. (At least the interesting ones.) It's why I never posted here after I signed up  - I really didn't need another time waster. I blame RE for drawing me in. ::)
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month 2008
Post by: little wilson on November 30, 2008, 07:58:32 AM
Haha. Yeah....I know I don't need any more time-wasters (facebook is enough, yet i still find more...), yet I signed up here, anyway. And I've been posting on here pretty much non-stop since then. I mean, I registered on the 13th. And I've already posted over 100 times....I need a life. And RE's just going to make it worse. Especially since I've got submission on Monday (speaking of which, I REALLY need to go back and finish editing my chapter 1...).

I think that editing (I'm adding a scene) will probably take up a bit of those words I'll write tomorrow. Probably won't even be 700, but still....If I do hit 15k, I'll at least be finished with Chapter 4. Maybe even 5, too, depending on how much I write....That would be sweet. Maybe that will give me the push I need to get back into writing this story...

...I actually wanted to win. Kind of. Obviously I didn't really want to win a whole lot, because if I did, I would've written more.... ::)
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month 2008
Post by: Silk on November 30, 2008, 08:04:54 AM
Facebook at least is not among my time-wasters. Well, it sort of is - I have an account because I wanted to put up a page for the swing band I play in - but I can't stand facebook and therefore ignore it most of the time. I seem to do pretty okay on time-wasters anyway.

Haha. I wanted to win, too. I want to win more now, which is sad 'cause I don't actually think it's going to happen. We'll see, I guess...

26k words in 24 hours? I'm all over that!

(Actually more like 20 hours, since I have to go to work Sunday night... damn...)

And don't worry. If writing itself doesn't give you the push you need to get back into the story, your caring fellows down at Reading Excuses will. ;)
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month 2008
Post by: little wilson on November 30, 2008, 08:12:23 AM
Well, Facebook wasn't originally one of them...and even now it's not my only one. I think imdb's coming back into being a time-waster....that site goes on and off for me. And at the moment I can't remember the other major ones, even though I know there's a bunch. Myspace used to be a huge one, but now I hardly even go there....I think it's more watching things online--whether that's movies, or tv shows, either one takes up a LOT of time....

And I'm sure it's possible to write 26k words in 24 hours....you'd just have to be on roll....and have a lot of caffeine, or something to keep you awake....

And sweet. I'm actually really looking forward to submitting, and seeing the other people's submissions. I love reading other stories. It's so much fun!

Haha. I can't honestly say I even know what imdb, and I never really got into the social networking sites like myspace, facebook and the like. My Internet time wasting is mostly forums (two general, one RP), webcomics, and author/publishing blogs. And designing my own websites.

I just broke the halfway point. Only 24960 to go. Waugh!

imdb is the internet movie database...It's pretty sweet. I go there for the forums. One particular movie forum, for one of my favorite books that's being made into a movie sometime....So not counting facebook (which isn't nearly as bad now as it once was....), my two main time-wasters are forums....I like forums. They're fun.

And good job! I still haven't written anything today. I was thinking about doing it, but then I got totally absorbed in The Count. It's a fantastic book! I've read over 200 pages today! I say that makes up for me not writing anything...

I totally have plans.  If I continue at the rate of 2k a day I should be done by the end of feburary.  But the issue is writing.

Anyone up for an after nanowrimo word war to see who can get the most words done by the end of january?  (So I have something to motivate myself with)
Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month 2008

50,021.

I can't believe I actually did it. (The word count my Nano profile reads differently but their bot thingies actually added to my word count, for some reason.)

Yeah, I still have to actually FINISH this bugger of a book. And I've learned this weekend (aside from learning that it's possible to write 25k in a day) that my book is, once again, probably bigger than I thought it was. *sigh* I've been guesstimating it at around 120k, but with my NaNo done it's at 90,000 and I'm not even sure I've hit a halfway point...

Hmmm. I'm all for wordwars, though I dunno about January. ANyone up for a December match? :P

I ended just shy of 30k, which is too bad because I didn't finish, but pretty good because I did a ton of other stuff during the month (a copy edit, incorporating as a business, etc.). And I'm still far ahead of my actual deadline with my publisher, so hooray.

Even not finishing, though, I got to experience that awesome writing "high," and I really love my book. If the rest of world likes this one have as much as I do, I will be a rich man.

Oh, it's a book you've probably never heard of. A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray....Who knows if they're actually gonna make it, though. It's been on the site since 2006, and production still hasn't started. The director keeps putting other works ahead of it.

And RAETHE! Wow. I'm in awe of your awesome-ness. Holy Hannah, I am seriously amazed! Congratulations. You're one of my new heroes. 25k in one day....wow. Just....wow....

I'm totally up for a December Word War or whatever. Hopefully I'll write more than I did this month (or technically, I guess it's last month, since it is now December....). Although to be completely honest, it would be hard to write less than I did and still call myself a writer...

I'm totally in for a word war. I really want to finish my book by the end of December anyway (since I'll be starting another one in a different class in January.)

Yeah, writing 25k words in a day is pretty... epic. I'd actually thought that trying would be a miserable experience - I can't believe how much FUN I had. (Not that I don't like writing normally, but the thought of making half of the month's word count in a day was pretty intimidating.) That's probably the only reason I finished, actually...

I even slept for almost two hours and worked a 4 hour shift!

btw, Fell: It's not fair to say stuff like that! We're already waiting with bated breath for your FIRST book to come out, jeez.

Oh, geez...Imagine doing it 3 days in row. Or even 4. Wow. 100k words in 4 days. I wonder if it's ever been done....Probably. But I doubt it's happened very often. I can tell you, it's not something I'm going to try.....although, it would be a pretty amazing feat.

But what am I saying? 25k in ONE day is an amazing feat. Seriously, Raethe, you should get an award just for THAT.

Wait!!!  I stand corrected!!! Raethe, you are the offical reigning champ.  Quote from the blog (http://mistborn.livejournal.com/2007/04/24/):

Quote
I spent yesterday in a marathon write.  Got up at seven, wrote until three am, with some breaks in between to do stuff like eat and talk to my wife.  It's kind of funny the feeling I had when I was finally done, at three.  I'd written some 24k words that day, and it was like I'd forcibly ripped every bit of creativity and imagination out of my brain and stuck it on the page.  My head throbbed, and I had trouble thinking about anything at all.  Very strange.  I should have fallen asleep right away, but instead I just lay there, feeling numb.

It wasn't like it was hard during the actual writing process.  Everything came easily and flowed rather well.  It's just that when I was finished, if felt really, really drained.  More so than other times.

Title: Re: National Novel Writing Month 2008
Post by: little wilson on December 03, 2008, 06:03:17 AM
Actually, you make a good point. I am a rather competitive person....assuming I know I have the slimmest of chances, anyway....so maybe I'll just spend December racing against RainbowRose, and hope that maybe SOMEHOW I can catch up to you....

And wow. You beat even Brandon. That's pretty amazing. If I'd known about this before last Saturday, I might've mentioned to him when I saw him at the signing....I might've said "You've got a challenger for most words written in a day. One person wrote 25k, and it sounds to me like that's throwing the gauntlet...." or something...I would've tried to make it more clever, but....yeah....It's a shame I didn't know. I'd would've liked to hear his response...

Ya know, the funny thing is, after reading that blog quote, I'm almost curious to try writing that much, just to experience that drained, numb feeling....

Nah, I figure I'll just tell him about your amazing feat, unless you tell me otherwise.  And it won't be in a q&a area, it will be while he signs my book.  As he does so I'll tell him about it.

That's what I meant...In the signing books. That's where I met him. Not at a Q&A (I wish I'd got to go to one of those...). But that almost makes the scene even funnier. I'm just picturing him like how I met him, and this happening...as a bystander, I'd be entertained...

Haha. Well, I may or may not have been joking about the 30k part. I haven't decided yet.

Maybe that's shooting too high? Should I go for 27k instead?

Haha. You can tell him about it if you really want. It just seems... well, if I were him, I imagine I'd think it were pretty random. XD

This it true.  I almost want to bring someone with me to record it... wait, wait, I have an idea!  Maybe ask him if I can get him to record a small little "words of wisdom/condolances" for you.  What would you think of that?

I'm more then likely going to tell him, simply becauses I think it will be intresting to see the reaction.

Too high? You wrote 25k in one day....Shouldn't you be making it harder? I say 30....27k is too little an amount to up it. (but what do I know? I have yet to write 5k in one day...)

And I'm curious to see the reaction. I wish I could be there to see it....And a words of wisdom/condolences sounds good...I'd like to hear that one too...

You know, where it's been over a year (almost two) since the last time he did it, and you're still recovering from yours, I think saying a challenge of 27k wouldn't be too bad.  (Or even simply to do 25k again).  But that's even if you honestly wanted to do it, which I would compleatly understand if you didn't.

Haha. Oh, I'm totally all for another 25k/27k/30k word challenge. As long as I can get some outlining done before then, that is.

I still don't see why EUOL particularly has to know about it, but if you WANT to tell him, go for it, I guess :P

Edit: Um... Should we maybe move this over to the Word War thread now? We've kind of taken over the NaNo thread and tgat might be a bit more appropriate anyway.

In the end it is up to you.  If you feel like you don't want me to say anything, I really won't.

Haha, oh, it really doesn't matter to me. I dunno if he'll say anything more than "that's cool" but you can if you want I guess. It just seems like it might sorta be awkward for both of you. :P

I actually had to try a couple of times before I could get it to show. The first time I saved it as an active award it didn't seem to take.

For those who don't know...

Free Proof Copy of Your Winning NaNoWriMo Manuscript in Book Form
CreateSpace, an Amazon.com Inc. owned company, is generously offering every NaNoWriMo 2008 winner a "free proof copy" of their 2008 manuscript. What this means: A free proof copy of your manuscript in paperback book form---just by following the instructions below. They'll even cover the costs of basic shipping to you.

To redeem the offer, you'll need a special NaNoWriMo winner's promo code. To get your promo code, you must be an official NaNoWriMo 2008 winner, and be signed into the NaNoWriMo site. Once you are, your unique promo code will be displayed at the bottom of this paragraph. Note that this code will not be used in the "referral code" box when setting up a CreateSpace account, but will instead be used after you've uploaded your manuscript and are actually ordering your proof copy.

Coool! :o

That is pretty neat. Wondering how they'd like my ninety-thousand-and-counting word MS though. ::)

I think they're expecting that.  I mean, you do have until June to get everything done.  I plan on submitting mine (which at min I'm hoping will be around 150k)

Whoa, really? That's awesome, then.

And yeah, I'm expecting mine to be at least that long. I thought I was going to end up around 120k when I was done, but between the 40,000 words I had before and my crazy, crazy NaNo I'm already at about 91,000. And this story has more than another 30k words in it, I think.

I'm the same way.  I thought that I'd have 50 maybe 60k, but nope, it'll be at least 100k before I'm done.  But I want to see that book on my shelf, staring at me, watching, motivating me. :'(

*Not a NaNoWriMo writer but....*

So are you actually going to do it, Raethe? The 27/30k in a day?

................ Madness :P

Congrats to all of the other winners.  Raethe, I thought you were joking when you said this late on November 29th:

That doesn't mean I'm not still writing. Only 27695 words to go!

Amazing!  I thought I was doing pretty good with a 6K output one day!  Oh, and thanks for the reminder, Necrobells.  I am looking forward to having a proof copy of my NaNo novel, even if most of the contents are crap. :)

Haha. To be entirely honest, I thought I was joking too. It never occured to me that I would actually make it. But came a point when I just decided I was going to keep trying if it bloody well killed me. (Which it just about did. In case you're wondering - totally worth it.)

Hayley: Yes, yes, I am.

I was actually going to try for it tomorrow, but I just remembered I have a swing band meeting that day and a concert to go to that night. It'll have to come sometime next week :P

What instrument do you play?  Or are you just going to the concert?

Just going to the concert, but in the swing band I mentioned, I play trombone mostly. Have a couple of vocal numbers too.

I salute you!
