Title: What else are you reading, lately?
Post by: kaimipono on August 16, 2008, 08:25:08 AM
You know, besides Brandon.  To get you through till October.

It seems to be kind of a dry spell lately, all around.  The Republic of Thieves isn't due for another 6 months.  Ditto for The Wise Man's Fear (which got bumped back).  And it's really anyone's guess when A Dance With Dragons will be out.

I'm thinking of picking up the new Sc*lzi (which looks like it's getting good reviews).  Either that, or swallowing all pride and borrowing my wife's stack of Stephanie Meyer.

But before I go that far, can I just take the group's pulse?  I may be missing something obvious.  What are y'all reading, lately?  Non-Sanderson category only, please.

I've started reading some King.  I just started The Shining and it is really good.  I have seen the movie a dozen times but never read the book.

But this goes in the books section. (http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?board=11.0)

Also there is already a thread for this here. (http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=3978.0)

Not necessarily...I mean, they want recommendations from someone who reads Brandon's stuff, and therefore would have similar interests to their own. It could, theoretically, go in the book section, however, putting it here gets them that element. If this whole site were Brandon's, then it'd go in books section, however, because it's a question specifically for Brandon's readers, it goes here.

And what's with the freaking out about thread locations lately, anyway? If the mods think they need to be moved, they will move them.

Now, for the question posed....that really depends I guess. It would help if you told us what you've already read, so that we don't give books you've already read. Right now I'm reading the Malazan Book of the Fallen Series, by Steven Erikson, beginning with Gardens of the Moon. It's a little confusing for the first 200 pages, seeing as the author drops you in the middle of a war, but I was pulled right in and stayed with it through to the end. About the 200 page mark it gets intense. The author doesn't mind killing of characters if necessary, so you get a somewhat Martin-ish feel. Beyond that, the scope of this series is HUGE. Like, massive. Like, probably as many characters as Wheel of Time or more. Plus there are already 8 books out, so they should keep you busy.

Like I said, if you could tell us what you've already read and liked, it would really help. But that's a start.

If it's not about Brandon's stuff, it goes in the other forums. Period.

Err, sorry about that.

Like Andrew suggests, I was hoping to hear specifically from Brandon fans (a group that has already demonstrated good taste and judgment).  I didn't realize it was against board norms, though.  Sorry bout that.

some people are really anal about topics starting up again and what posts go in what forum. Maybe its not proper forum ettiquete but it really_is_not_a_BIG_Deal. They don't take into account that your a Brandon Sanderson fan therefore you only want to post in Brandon's forum and want to know what books other Brandon Sanderson fans are reading. They read the title of the post but still felt some obligatory need to correct you as if to teach you a lesson. Personally I say if you want to make a post then go for it, Ignore the nay sayers. They have a choice to ignore the thread completely if they wish and let those who truly wish to comment back do so. But they don't. Some people should get off their high horse  and relax a little bit, it is just a forum.  It is easy for people forget their manners online.

FYI
Read the Rhapsody series by Haydon
ALl the star wars books by Timothy Zahn and the ones by Anderson (jedi academy trillogy i believe)
Sword of Truth by Goodkind
Runelords by Farland (I think) was an interesting series as well but I admit even I havent read the last 2 or 3
A game of thrones by George rr martin is pretty good. (last book wasnt great but the first few are fantastic)
as well as all of the drizzit D'Urden (Sp.) Series ( very easy but cool reads) by RA SAlVATORE

Those should last you awhile.

I honestly think that if the question is specifically intended to garner the opinion of fellow Sanderson fans on what other books they like then this is a fine place for it.

And on that note... I just finished "The Blade Itself" by Joe Abercrombie and I will be buying the next one this evening.  Bloody awesome book. In all ways.  Really enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

I've been reading Mark Chadbourn's books before I found out about Brandon. He is similar in that he tried to do something different with fantasy. Its basically set in modern England as the world for some inexplicable reason turns to a place of magic again and technology begins to fail. I liked it a lot the first two times I read the series it has some cool concepts about christianity and paganism. He's nowhere near as good a writer as Brandon though

Yeah, my mom buys me Brooks' books whenever a new one comes out, even though I haven't cared for him for awhile now. She just bought me Gypsy Morph and I am forcing myself to read it. I haven't had the heart to tell her I don't care for them because she takes pleasure in buying them for me. It keeps us close I guess despite the distance.

I don't think I'm gonna read anything past the High Druid of Shannara series that I just started. I mean the books are ok even though they lack a lot of depth. But to continue to read after the whole Four Lands thing is done and see what else he can do a lack luster job on isn't to appealing.

Lets see... in the past week or so I've read,

Karen Miller-- Kingmaker(book1) & Kingbreaker(book2)
J.V.Jones-- Cavern of Black Ice(book1)
Guy Gavriel Kay-- The Wandering Fire(book2) & The darkest Road(book3) [I seem to have lost book1]

The new Genesis of Shannara series (gypsy morph being the last) bridges between Word and the Void and the Sword of Shannara. It explains a few things, etc. His next series will probably bridge the 4 lands to Landover, meh.

I think any reader who enjoys Brandon will enjoy the works of Scott Lynch (Lies of Locke Lamora) and Pattrick Rothfuss (The Name of the Wind).   If you haven't read them yet, I'd say bump them up to the top of your list.

The last few books I read were:

- Robin Hobbs Assassin trilogy (starting with Assassin's Apprentice) - The first two are great, the third is worth reading.
- MB:HoA - Amazing.  I'm as much of a super fan as many of the other people here, and this won't disappoint.
- The Eye of the World - I just started this, about 1/2 way through and enjoying it so far.

I think my next book is going to be Brisinger when it's released in a few days.  I know the Eragon series get's a lot of criticism, but I found the other two entertaining enough to read twice.   After that I'll probably continue with the Wheel of Time.

And this thread DOES NOT BELONG IN THIS FORUM.

In general, I'd agree with you, Ookla, since there's a perfectly good "What are you reading" thread in Books. But since the OP was asking Brandon's fans specifically, and many may not frequent the other parts of the boards, I think it's all right this time. Especially since a lot of the posts are 'If you like Brandon's books, these others may interest you as well" types of posts.

Though might I suggest to everyone that if you'd like to discuss what you're reading in general, as opposed to "in lieu of Brandon's newest books since they're not out yet," to please join the discussion in the Books section? Thanks!

Title: Re: What else are you reading, lately?

Having managed a book store, I have to disagree with you Ookla (I know, it rarely happens).  This is actually the BEST place for a thread of this SPECIFIC nature.

People like to know what authors will appeal to them after having read a certain author.  I DO think, however, that while posting on this thread, you need to make certain that you are posting "If you like Sanderson, you will like (insert author here) BECAUSE (insert reason here)."

What I mean is, simply saying what you are reading doesn't actually fit in with the OP's question.  People want to know what they should read BECAUSE they enjoy Sanderson.  Does that distinction make sense?  If you are just posting what you like, they by all means, get the heck out.  However, if you are posting reasons why people may like, say, Rothfuss because you see similar themes or writing techniques, then that is fine.

Please remember, a lot of book sales are done through recommendation.  But, it has to be done intelligently - not just a list of what you think is neat.

For example, I would never recommend Brooks, Eddings, or Paolini (read: rip-off of the prior mentioned authors and Star Wars) to people who read Sanderson if they are over the age of 14.  They dont have the depth, technique, or intelligence to match Sanderson's novels.

In my experience, many people who read Sanderson's novels tend to gravitate towards the following (note: there are exceptions to all of these):

Guy Gavriel Kay - Something about the settings, and politics seem to strike similarities.  In addition, he is an author that Brandon recommends.

Steven Erikson - He's not for everyone.  But the people who like the intelligence and depth of Brandon's work, and who want even more, really dig this guy.  He is my personal favorite.  I actually sold more of his novels than i did of Brandon's (which says a hell of a lot).  I think more Erikson readers will read Brandon's stuff after reading the 3rd MB novel.

George R R Martin - There will be an endless debate over this and the, uh, appropriateness of some of his writing.  However, it was hard for me to ignore that readers tend to like both.  I think more Martin readers will go for Brandon's stuff after reading the 3rd MB novel.

Patrick Rothfuss - They are friends.  They like each other's work.

Scott Lynch - Locke Lamora is a great novel.  The similarities begin with the heist theme that is introduced in Brandon's MB1.  They diverge after that, but people like them both for the Heist theme.  Beware of language in this book.

Abercrombie - All that you've heard is true.  This guy is great.  Really, he is a 2nd tier "if you like Brandon" book.  The reason being that he is more of a variation on the grittiness and humor found in Martin and Lynch.

Those are a few people I recommend "If you like Sanderson's novels."  There are more, but it all is very dependent on what you do and DON'T (very important - arguably more important than what you DO) like.

So, I, Not Bookstore Guy Anymore, approve of this thread.

As long as you do it my way.  Because that is the correct way.

The End.

Buddha agrees with Not Bookstore Guy Anymore.

And to follow NBGA's formula:

If you like Brandon's books, I think you'll like Jack Vance's Lyonesse series because the magic system and world building are very original.  Very un-tolkien in a good way.

i just don't know if i can say that  because i like Brandon Sanderson i like other certain authors. i don't even know if any authors i read are all that similar.  i tend to change the style of the books i read to what i am in the mood for.

currently i am reading the orc king by R.A. salvatore. if your looking for an action packed book with lots of fight scenes i have to recommend any of the Drizzt books by Salvatore.

last week i read the fall of angels by L.E. Modesitt Jr. it is i think book 6 or 7 in his recluse series. the first book the magic of recluse was a little confusing at first but the following books were generally pretty good. his main characters tend to be builders or engineers of some sort and go into their work in some detail, so if your into that he is pretty good.

ill probably start on the third book in the sword of shannara trilogy i think its whishsong of shannara next week brooks writing is simple and doesn't go real in depth which is just a nice read sometimes.

another writer i like for his in depth and political writing is Alexander Dumas. he doesn't have any fantasy novels but i would definitely recommend the count of Monte cristo to anyone who loves Sanderson. its a huge book around 1500 pages very in depth, a very good revenge plot and just plain good writing.

on a side note i do appreciate the language warning from not bookstore guy anymore. i really do not like to see bad language in any books that i read i think it shows bad taste and lack of creativity. but that is just my opinion.

A thread about other books aimed at Brandon's readers could still be located in the Books forum. People new to Brandon's forum are still asked to post in the main "introduce yourself" thread rather than making threads or posts about that here, even though their interaction is spawned by Brandon's forum alone.

My point is is Brandon's forum supposed to exist as its own little isolated community, or do we want people to be encouraged to visit other parts of TWG? I believe people should be encouraged to think, when they are out of Brandon topics to talk about, "Hm, what's going on in the other forums here? I see a books forum; I wonder what other Brandon fans are saying about other books there" and not just ignore the books forum and ask about it here.

I think that at this point we can assume a majority of the new traffic coming into this forum is coming because of Brandon, even though it didn't start out that way. That makes it almost like a WOTmania situation, where there's a Wheel of Time forum and an Other Fantasy forum. People who want to know what authors other Robert Jordan fans read have to ask in the Other Fantasy forum, not the Wheel of Time forum.

If threads start getting moved that many believe are BRANDON SANDERSON Specific to non-Sanderson forums because a few select people believe it belongs in a less populated forum to promote traffic to other less used areas of a website then Brandon should start looking into organizing his own personal forums where third party politics don't interfere with his rapidly growing fan base. Traffic has probably increased 50 to 100 fold since taking over WOT, and AMOL will escalate Sanderson to rock star status in the fantasy world. TWG should embrace new fans, not bicker over petty issues like where certain threads should be posted. It just makes those few who complain look like little kids throwing a temper tantrum.

Let me put 2 examples out there:

1) When I set up Brandon's MAJOR signing, it was for Mistborn 1.  His table was set up in the front of the store.  When we brought in groups of people to have their books signed and numbered (we had over 200 reserved copies, all of which sold and more besides), we filtered them through a certain area of the store by which we had set up tables upon which were stacked books that were "similar" in style and taste as Brandon's.  People didn't have to leave the line or the area to browse an entire store for something very specific.  Guess what?  People liked that we had done that.  They requested that things like that be done again.  They asked me if there was a mailing list they could sign up for - an electronic version of what I had set up.  We sold a TON of extra books that day because it was geared and marketed to a SPECIFIC FOCUS GROUP.

2) When you go to a bookstore, and you ask for a specific book, does the bookseller tell you to go to another part of the mall before he answers your question?  Does he tell you that for "specific questions" you should go to a different bookstore?  No.  While this example is a bit extreme, it is still relevant.  If people have specific questions about books that could be considered similar to Brandon Sanderson's books, then they should be looking on a specific Brandon Sanderson Thread.  If they cannot do this, then, from my point of view, that specific area of the forum has failed.

I am not telling people to post "I r reading neat stuff" topics here.  That is for the other GENERAL forum.  I am telling people that this is an entirely appropriate place for people to ask questions regarding books that could be considered liked by readers who enjoy Brandon's work.  There is a HUGE difference there.  Skar's example was spot-on.  It's like when authors give other authors cover-quotes.  You don't see Robin Hobb saying, "If you like Brandon, you'll like Patrick Rothfuss!" and then putting that cover quote on Stephen King's books.  This is the same thing.

So pardon me if I think you are all incorrect.

Perhaps something more organized should be started in this specific channel of the forums.  Thread where the original posting is continually modified to reflect  books that could be similar to those that Brandon writes, or even books that Brandon himself likes.  If people was to send me books they have read with reasons why they are similar, I can make and maintain a post that will give people this info.

This type of thread BELONGS HERE.  Anything else is piss-poor marketing.  As the previous poster stated, there is a lot more traffic here than before, and it is directed at this channel in the forum, not the other ones.  The better info in this one of a specific nature, the more likely people will branch out to other threads (good comment mrod271).

I can come up with examples too:

I am interested in people's opinions. Should I trade in my Honda Element for a hybrid? What are the pros and cons? Please, I only want to hear from people that are intersted in Brandon Sanderson like I am.

As someone who frequents too many forums to count, I can understand the need to stick with forum guidelines. It's bad enough when someone like me derails threads at will, its another when moderators allow off-topic threads from the get go.

Since Brandon is in the book business, and not in the car business your example is off-base.  A person asking Brandon Sanderson readers, on a Brandon Sanderson Channel, about books that they can read that are similar to his is perfectly reasonable.  The posters in the General Books forum review and discuss all books - doesnt matter the genre, author, or similarities.

Now, if you go back and read my posts, you will see that I have said that posts of those themes belong in the General Books area.  I have posted there.  The things I say there are very different from what I hope gets started in Brandon's specific Forum, because there its general.  Here, it is specific.  Does that make sense?
Title: Re: What else are you reading, lately?

I still disagree, because if this forum is about marketing anything, it should be about marketing Brandon Sanderson books, not other books. There's a very easily accessible books forum just a click away. If people need a sticky thread that's a redirect to a thread in the Books forum, that sounds like an OK compromise, but there's a lot of duplication if people are posting in this forum about non-Brandon books and also in the Books forum about non-Brandon books.

You don't expect to see Robin Hobb books shelved between Mistborn and Elantris. You expect them a few feet down from Mistborn and Elantris, i.e. a click away within the same forum. I'm not saying people should have to go to an entirely different website/store on the internet/shopping mall, just the shelf space right next to the shelf space that's set aside for Brandon Sanderson's books. People who are members of this forum are already members of the entire TWG site, so why not take advantage of it?

This thread is only tangentially related to Brandon Sanderson. The rest of the forum is also tangentially related to Brandon Sanderson. It's a perfect fit.
Title: Re: What else are you reading, lately?

so it's not ok to to have a resource for fans?  it's not ok to have people clicking on the link from Brandon's webpage directly to his specific forum and see a list of his recommended books and similar books listed?  i'm sorry, but a link to the book thread in the other forum doesnt accomplish anything -  it's TOO GENERAL.  what i proposed was a closed list that could be maintained and updated as new stuff comes out.  no comments, just a list with the "why" on it.  but it seems people would rather keep trying to say why Im wrong than address my idea.
Title: Re: What else are you reading, lately?
Post by: Peter Ahlstrom on September 10, 2008, 10:15:23 PM
And what I proposed was a thread in the Books forum that specifically recommended books to people who like Brandon Sanderson books. But I think your idea is an interesting one, if less forumy, since forums are generally for discussions rather than lists. I have seen some specialized list threads in at least one other forum though.

But I don't think a list is what people clicking a forum link from Brandon's website would expect to find. I can easily picture another link on Brandon's website listing other books the reader might like, if Brandon has chosen the list himself.

When you step back a level and just have fan recommendations, it becomes very subjective. There could easily be books that some people would think Brandon fans would like that other people would think Brandon fans would not like. How do you decide what goes on the list and what gets left off? So I think a discussion thread where people can share their opinions either way is a better idea--and that makes it just a normal thread that goes in the books forum. :)

Ok, you make the rules.

I am intested in attending a convention. Brandon Sanderson has made several speaking appearances, most recently DragonCon, so I was hoping to get recommendations from his fans about speakers that are similar and conventions that I could attend. I would also like to hear from some of Brandon's former students, to get opinions on grading. Do you prefer the bell curve, etc.

Ookla - ah see, i only saw that you wanted to link people to that general book thread that has been on-going.  it made no sense to me.  now i see what you are saying.  What if, like you said, we have a link to the books section from here.  That link makes clear that it goes to a section where people discuss recommendations specific to whether "if you like Sanderson you will like X"?

I think a evolution of this idea we seem to be brewing is in order, and i think you hit it - Brandon should have a list on his personal website where he lists specific authors he enjoys, and authors that a Bookstore Guy like me might recommend to people who like his stuff.

Whatcha think?

Vegas -
you still are taking the theme of this thread out of context.  sorry.  it still doesn't cross over into the root themes Ookla and I have appeared to make a game plan for.

Yeah, VegasDev, your analogies are a bit silly, and I don't think they contribute to the discussion.

Brandon has recommended plenty of authors from time to time in his blog, and I'm sure many people appreciate it. Whether he wants to put a more permanent list on his website is totally up to him (and Spriggan) and is not really any of our business. (He needs to update his bio page...)

I think a dedicated "Books that readers think would appeal to fans of Brandon Sanderson" thread in the Books forum would work just fine though.

[EDIT: Also, the first post in this thread doesn't make any restrictions about only mentioning books that would appeal to fans of Brandon's writing but basically just asks for people to list off whatever other books they're reading. That's definitely not something useful to have here.]
Title: Re: What else are you reading, lately?

ok then.

I will start a thread there that is the product of this discussion.  i will lay down some ground rules in it.  i will then put a list of books that i think fit the criteria and let the conversation flow from there.  In addition, i may include some WoT stuff in there since that is all the rage now days.

Once that is posted (i'll get to it tonight i hope), we should get a stick thread in THIS forum stating "Book recommendations/discussions for those who like Brandon's novels" or something like that.  locked topic with a brief lowdown on what to expect by clicking on the link.  this way, both of our ideas are accomplished - people see that there are indeed Brandon specific fan recommendations somewhere here (like i think is essential), and they see more of the forums and hopefully get more involved (like you think is essential).

yeah? yeah?

once again...

...we are BRILLIANT!!

Since Brandon Sanderson's website endorses this forum as his official forum then all Brandonesque posts should be contained within.  Even those only tangentially associated with Brandon Sanderson. It should NOT be spread out between multiple forums. His link and therefore a majority of the sites traffic is directed into this forum and not the book forum.  Why not just create some static sub-categories under Brandon Sanderson's main forum link. Accessibility is important, I too read a number of forums for a number of different authors. As a new fan I click  travel to this forum through Sanderson's web page. IF there were sub categories listed under the Author that I wished to read about then I would agree 100% to move threads to different forums as long as they are all under the umbrella of the MAIN Brandon Sanderson link.   Administrators working with Brandon's People could determine what those categories are. Since new books are always being released and the book thread's are common in almost every forum out there, it would be a great static sub-category under the main Brandon link. Until then it is simply not reasonable to expect the vast majority of the traffic to back track from a main entry point to the site.

To reiterate: It is unreasonable to expect people who are directed into the brandon forum through the website to back track to an "appropriate" forum. The easy solution is to create static sub categories that divide the topics for Brandon's Fans under the MAIN Sanderson Link.

Which is, in a way, what they are doing. They're creating a link in this forum to the appropriate place to discuss it. The actual thread. I think it's an excellent solution, really.

And though Brandon is responsible for a spike in forum traffic and probably a good portion of the growth, I wouldn't say his fans account for the "vast majority of the traffic." Although, notably, a number of the people on twg are fans of his, it's not necessarily because of him that they're here. I enjoy most of the other sections of the boards as much as if not more than this one.

thats because...

...we are BRILLIANT!!!

mrod271 - this IS what we are doing.  since we cannot make a "Brandon Endorses" list with out lots of discussion with him and his approval (which should be left to his own designs on his personal website), we are doing the next best thing - providing accessibility and discussion.  Brandon's website --> this specific forum --> specific thread in the books forum.

So maybe not a vast majority that statement really wasn't based on any facts but I bet its a good portion of any new growth in visitors to the forum.

The topic should just be made static, not here a link there a link jump around the boards...thats silly. Just keep it all under Sandersons Name.

mrod271, I don't think anything tangentially related should be here, like what movies Brandon likes or what webcomics he reads or whatnot. Why make subforums under the umbrella of Brandon Sanderson when Brandon is one of the founders of The Official Timewasters' Guide in the first place? Brandon's brother even maintains the server. Basically it sounds like you're wanting to read only pages that have Brandon's name on them; well, as The Official Timewasters' Guide is partially Brandon's, you might just consider the whole forum as his forum if it will make you happy.

Yeah, VegasDev, your analogies are a bit silly, and I don't think they contribute to the discussion.

I agree, they are silly. Yet, they are just as valid excuses for discussing other topics unrelated to Brandon Sanderson as those used in this thread. Some people do feel they can discuss any topic as long as it is even remotely related to Brandon Sanderson, despite what forum rules suggest and it will only get worse as AMoL gets closer. Not that I don't care for them (I discussed Brooks earlier), I was merely providing examples supporting any moderator action taken to these types of threads.

I do agree that it will only get worse later, especially if it's not dealt with now as it keeps coming up. The mods that have posted in this thread don't sound concerned though.

Slackers. They should rule with an iron fist; absolute authority. They could learn a little from the Lord Ruler. Hey...wait a minute. Maybe they are, allowing us to rebel so that we weed each other out and get it out of our system. Sneaky.

When I first became a member of this site I wrote Brandon an E-mail about what authors he enjoyed reading and what authors where role models for him when he was becoming a writer. He responded with a this list

Quote
>> Robert Jordan (of course)
>> David Eddings (I don't think he holds up as well as Robert Jordan
>> does,
>> but man can he write fun characters.)
>> R.A. Salvatore. (Nobody else can write action sequences quite
>> like him.)
>> Tad Williams (The only one I know who approaches Robert Jordan's
>> ability
>> to write grand-scale books. He's not quite as epic as Jordan, but
>> is an
>> excellent writer.)
>> Melanie Rawn (I love her magic systems.)
>> Barbara Hambly (Her fantasy book Dragonsbane is what made me want
>> to be
>> a writer.)
>>
>> These days, I've been reading the following:
>> Terry Pratchett. (Brilliant, just brilliant.)
>> Patrick Rothfuss. (Another newcomer like me. He only has one
>> book out,
>> but it's great.)

I will check for the thread you create in the books forum in the morning (or later tonight--don't know if I'll be on the computer later or not), and I'd be happy to create a linking, locked post in this section doing what you asked.

Ookla's right that I'm not terribly concerned about this particular thread, but I'm certainly happy to accommodate those who are when presented with a workable, easy solution such as has been proposed.  :)

The Orc King is good?

I loved Salvatore for a long time but after reading so many of his books he kind of lost me in some of them. I would love to see if this one is any good.

I've recently discovered I have no patience with mediocre fantasy novels since I finished HoA.  I've tried to read several and gave up in disgust.  I've ended up reading serious histories and things like that.  I used to be able to enjoy a brain-dead book, just for the amusment factor, but I can't any more.
