Title: This week at Worldcon: "Rolling up the Wheel of Time" panel with Sanderson, etc.
Post by: Peter Ahlstrom on August 05, 2008, 06:22:55 AM
At 10:00 a.m. this Saturday, August 9th, the World Science Fiction Convention in Denver will host the following panel:

449: Rolling up the Wheel of Time
CCC - Room 504
Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series has been rolling on for quite a few years now. Find out how Jordan wanted to finish the series, who is going to write the ending, and how the publishers are making it happen.
Brandon Sanderson, (m) Moshe Feder, Peter Ahlstrom, Tom Doherty.

I am not sure why they put me on the panel (that's a daunting group to be in!), but I'd like to make the most of it as a sort of representative of the fans who won't be able to be there. So I'm throwing this thread open to questions, of which I'll try to ask as many as possible.

Just a couple ground rules--

I'll be paying the most attention to the questions submitted in the next 24 hours, since I'm leaving for Denver on Wednesday morning. As for how you'll get your answers...I'm guessing that at least one podcaster will record the panel, but I'll still take as many notes as I can.

You should ask if he's going to stick 100% to the concept outlines RJ left behind or if he is going to decide to throw some of it out.

-Getting close to level 40 I see. ;)

I know the answer to that, but sure, that's a good question to ask. :)

Sorry if the answer to this question is common knowledge, but it's the only question I really have.

Are all of the relations to the classic arthurian legends on purpose?  If so, what is their purpose?  I don't really see much of the book being a really long twisted version of them, yet so many of the characters have names that are shared with those of the classic (and I mean, like "Le Morte d'Arthur" old.).

the only relation to the once and future king that i can think of is Artur Hawkwing. What others did you have in mind?

Ask Brandon now that he has Jordan's notes, how big is randland, and how much of it we will not ever see.

Just a few of the ones I can think of off the top of my head are Morgause and Elane -- also known as Arthur's sisters (he had three, but most only know about Morgana or Morgen La Fae).  The Dragon also the symbol of the Pendragons.  Nynaeve is one of the three most widely used names for the lady of the lake (also known as Narcissa, and one other name that starts with "N"), Galad was one of the knights of the round table.  And I don't know about anyone else but he also reminds me of Lancelot or Galahad.

Those are just the ones I can think of right now (yes, most of them are names, but like I said, that's mainly what I wanted to know.)

Will the dedication page at the begining be for RJ himself, if so will there be some sort of tribute in the first editions to the original author?

Will Brandon be doing a book tour for AMoL?  And if so, will he make it to the East Coast?

From what I have seen, you do more than any other author that I have followed in terms of communicating with your fans before, during and after the writing process. What, if anything, can we look forward to you sharing with us while you work to complete this book? Also, will you be doing annotations of the chapters once you are done writing this book?

He was asked this at the signing in Denver.

He basically said he isn't going to do the annotations, but he does want to release a much more in depth "the making of" type of book.  He said if it was something he did/could do, it would contain things such as which sections are Jordan's and which are Brandon's.

Yes. I'll go into more detail in the report, but Tom is dubious the book won't end up being split into two volumes. It sounds like the probability is high of a part-1-October/part-2-November release, with the possibility of a collectors-quality special edition single volume. However, no one will know for sure until the book is done. Brandon is just under 200,000 words and told Tom the book is 1/3 done, but it's possible the other viewpoints will end up shorter than currently estimated.

My conclusion: Tor doesn't care a bit about what RJ said. They don't have any respect for his wishes and just want to make some extra bugs. The shadow rising is almost 700 pages in hardcover and it's 400.000 words. So a 600.000 words book based on how they published book 4 would be about a 1000 pages.  That's possible to publish: See a Storm of Swords by GRRM. If they are not considering doing that, than my only conclusion is the money. 3 books make a lot of money. (part A+B +collecters item)

Especially if they publish them a month apart. Nothing more than money making. No reason not to bring them out at the same time to respect RJ's wishes.

Actually, there is a good reason not to put them out at the same time: Bookstores would have a much easier time stocking two books in different months than two books at the same time. They only have so much shelf and display space they can use at a time, and twice as many copies of one book in one month and another book in another month makes it easier for people to find the book and buy it.

I'm not saying it's the best or only decision to make, but the needs of bookstores is a valid consideration that fans may not be aware of.

If it comes down to seperating the book or trimming content, the choice is pretty clear. Besides, if Brandon does his job like I think he can, seperating the books won't even be an issue; it will seem like two seperate books rather than two halves of a single book. I'll wait until they hit the shelves before I form my opinion either way.

Pesonnally, it doesn't matter to me.  I'll buy both, then the collector's edition and give the individual volumes as gifts.  by the way, thanks Ookla for taking the time to ask our questions for us.  I look forward to your report.

1. Two books won't be two self containing stories. That is not possible. RJ said it himself.
2. Plus how would they name it? A memory of light A, A memory of ligt B? or A memory of Light and Tarmon Gaidon?
Whatever it will be it's not something that RJ choice and that is way important.
3. Going against the author wishes while it could be publised as one book. Very disrespectfull.

4. I frankly don't care about the stores. how will they advertise for it: Buy now part one, not the full story, it will leave you hanging and than in a month buy the other small half. 60 bucks for two books.

I don't mind two books, I just mind paying for two books  :(

And about the collector's edition, I am sure it would be available no earlier than book 2 so if someone wanted the collector's edititon they would miss out on reading the first book when it was released (unless they buy that too).

What can you do though? I don't blame Tor and I certainly can not and will not blame RJ, Harriet, and/or Brandon.

The movie deal was not mentioned or asked about by anyone.

How the split would work, if the book does get split, was not mentioned beyond the October/November idea. Brandon is NOT writing it with splitting it in mind. He's writing it as one coherent book.

To me personally I'd pay a hefty price whether the book came out in one or 100 pieces. Although, Isabel has a good point here and it is that RJ wanted this in one volume and that should be honored. In the end it wouldn't be Brandon that would split it into pieces but the publisher might and the only reason for that is money. Whether to make it fit onto a shelf to save space and therfore money or too get people to buy mulitiple copies. It is alll about the money the story will be able to generate. Sadly in this world it usually does come down to money.

I'm honestly mystified by this attitude.  Publishers shouldn't make money?  They should maybe publish books for free out of the goodness of their hearts?  Give me a break.

If they were talking about splitting a 120,000 word book into two parts then you'd have something to gripe about, but a 600K work?  Please, that's perfectly reasonable.

I don't think it matters if they split it or not cause I know every one here will go buy it anyways. I'm sorry  I didn't see this thread earlier but was anything mentioned about the graphic novels and when they might start production on those.

I think it was Harriet that made the decision.  RJ didn't want anything to do with picking who wrote the last book, so even if he DID read EUOL's books. . . it wouldn't have mattered.

EDIT: Sorry for the DP.

Give you a break??? Really???? Oh and Myabi, "noob at life", what are you five? You both missed the point completely. I never said anything about them not making any money. My point was that it was sad that they would bypass  RJ's wish only to make a little extra money. They are going to make money whether it comes out in 1 book or a series of books. So, I'm not asking for a free book here I'm asking for a little honor that the world lacks. I'm not naive, or a "noob at life" I know that world doesn't work that way that doesn't make it a good thing though. This was a mans life work and he wanted it done a certain way and now that he is gone it's up to those left here to make that happen and if the publisher looks past that to fatten his pockets it is a shame. I never griped about paying for two books. In the beginning of my post I stated that I am willing to pay a high price for up to 100 books just to read this final installment on one hell of a series. I am just pointing out how that it is an absolute shame that money overrules everything in this world.

But you AREN'T seeing the point.  It wouldn't be divided in a way JUST to make extra money.  I mean honestly could imagine carrying around a 600K WORD BOOK!?!?!?!  That thing would be HUGE!  It's about what will be easiest for the reader and so it will look nicer on your shelf.

I think people also have to take what RJ says in a QA session at face value. We don't know what kind of agreements RJ had with his publisher in the end and with Harriet being executive editor with Tor, I doubt they would do anything against his (or Harriet's) wishes.

If Jordan were alive and turned in a 600K book, they'd split it into two for practical reasons.  Why should it be any different now that he's dead?

On another note, I don't think Brandon is going to hand in a 600K work.  I don't have any special knowledge, I just doubt it's going to be that long.  He and Jordan both have tighter writing styles than that.  Most of this 600K speculation comes from differing off the cuff estimates of how much he's got done now.  It's never a good idea to make plans based on WAGs.

I don't think I said that it was 600.000 words, but only that it was a 1000 pages.
So taking the same setting as a Shadow Rising, a hardcover can be a 1000 pages, same as A storm for Swords ;)
That is the biggest GRRM book.

I understand the desire to respect RJ's wishes, however, he said the rest of the story would be one book, not that it would be published in one volume. Regardless of whether it's published in one part or two, it will still be one book. If RJ had handed in a 600k novel, it would have been split, the same way a feast for crows was split into two parts. I can see the reasoning, and as long as they don't start another book, I'll be ok with it.

Oh, right, sorry, you were talking about page count.

My parents have a copy of Les Miserables that's 1492 pages in a single volume. So, technically, it can be done somehow. There may be other technical considerations, though. The machines Tor's contracted printing house uses for binding may have a maximum size less than 1000 pages, for example, necessitating a switch to a more expensive printing house. There would be a point at which printing two books is more economical.

Ultimately, yes, it's a question of economics. And Harriet, with her publishing experience, may be more pragmatic in regards to the practical concerns of the publisher than Jim was and may have been planning to ultimately convince him to allow a split. And regardless of Jim's statements on the matter, it's difficult to say he never would have been convinced. However, this is all moot. Jim has gone, and the moral force with which he may have stood up to publishing demands can no longer be brought to bear. The book won't be split without Harriet's permission, that's for sure, but how she will weigh in on the matter is currently unknown.

I have a Shakespearean collection (one book) that's 1263 pages, but it doesn't even feel as durable (thinner pages, and I've had the binding break quickly on one of those). Like when they print Bibles; those pages rip easy.

This is the Pattern at work. I began telling people after The Path of Daggers, when the title for Winter's Heart was first announced, that the Wheel of Time would take thirteen volumes. After Crossroads of Twilight was released and RJ repeatedly stated during interviews that he would take no more than two more volumes to complete the series, I worried that he was resisting the tug of the Pattern.

Given how significant the number thirteen is throughout, once the story reached nine volumes it was clear to me that the Pattern would demand thirteen.

Of course, that and $4.29 at Starbucks...

They can split it into part 1 and part 2 like Tad William's did with To Green Angel Tower, which was a great book. I'd like to see them use the cool reverse cover art thing they did too.

I don't mind a split and a collector's edition; however, being a WOT nut I am going to want the collector's edition plus I will want, at least, the dust jackets of the two volumes.  I doubt nuts like me will be able to be satisifed (without buying the two volumes also).

Spoiler Alert
When talking about viewpoint clusters, Brandon mentioned a "Perrin Faile and Galad" cluster, so, we know where Galad is going.

Well, if you read KoD paying attention to geography, they were basically in the same spot at the end of the book.

Not that I realized it myself until Brandon told me at lunch in May. But this info is not a surprise to most of the hardcore fans on the other forums.

I'm only on Lord of Chaos on my 4th or 5th read through... It's months since I last read KoD.

Yeah, that's just confirmation of what we've theorized about for a long time on dragonmount. Although I had to have it pointed out to me too.

Ook your the man. Your post about the conferance was awsome and it was good to see you asked questions from the fans. Although I didnt realize that for ever misdirecting comment you make you must lose a little hair. Im kidding, really as a fan of both WoT and Brandons it was a great read and I wouldnt have seen it if you didnt post it.
