I was actually on imdb considering titles for the new thread. The best one was the Superfly Night Crew's Diamonds, or the Sons of the Superfly.

Having a new baby is great! Man did I miss this. She is just so cuddly. Although I would have to say my manhood is threatened when I'm the one who tells the wife which cute little dress to buy. My manhood is fighting daddyhood but I think it will be about even. I'm just so excited! But I'm also ready for a little maelstrom. I need a few minutes of quite time after the last few days.

Friday morning. I was on my way home from work, when the Doctor called my life asking if she wanted to be induced that day. That was her due date, but the doctor also knew how worried my wife was about me missing it, since I work so far away. 5 hours later we had the most beautiful little girl I have ever seen.

Cap't,

You wife has my sincerest sympathies. Pitocin is of the devil. It is evil. It is a torture device formulated especially for already suffering pregnant women. It hurts about ten times worse than natural labor. And it usually takes quite a bit longer than 5 hours.

Here's a toast to the women of your house, Captain.

It's 10 in Utah, Archon. Jeffe and Stacer are east-coasters, so it'd be 12 for them. You on Central time?

Eastern. There are only a few counties in Michigan with Central time.

Sounds like he's either on Eastern (which begins in parts of Indiana) or he's in one of those strange we-don't-like-Daylight-Savings areas, like where my cousins live in western Indiana. I think Michigan is in Eastern, though.

That's part of the reason why I can't take naps. My subconscious leaks really badly when I do. You can ask Fell about the last time I took a nap. I had the strangest dream. It was freaky, and he told me never to take naps again.

Maybe tomorrow... no, no time to take nap tomorrow.

Well.... this is really weird. I just checked my bank account with Keybank. Because I'm a tad paranoid like that I check it at least once a day. Etc. Now, I bought a $242 plane ticket last week. Now, I had about $245 in there. So, there should be about $3. Then tonight I bought $2 in gas.

When signing in tonight I expected to see around $1 and some change. I log in and see instead $243.39. I go to Expedia and look at "My Trips" and see that I still have it there. This really blows my mind.

Post by: Archon on February 15, 2005, 01:45:52 AM
We used to do a lot of camping in a pop up camper. When it rained at night, that was so awesome, because the beds were covered with canvas, which made a really cool noise, but the top was fiberglass, so the sounds mixed, and it was just amazing for sleeping.

Gemm, maybe interest rates are up. :)

Night watch was fun most of the time... except off of Boston in a Nor'easter or at the end of the midwatch....

We'd play games on the mids to keep us up...

it was fun...
plus you get midrats before you go up,... which is burgers and fries and chili and pizza and all the crud that isnt good for you...

Watch was 4 hours long, and split into quarters. 1 hour at helm, one standing lookout, 1 more at helm and one more at lookout....

Lookouts use a pair of binoculars to find ships, obstacles and aircraft... (easier at night thanks to lights or harder thanks to idiots not using them)

Its cool...
Title: Re: The Vicomte de Superfly
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on February 15, 2005, 02:02:07 AM
On lookout you learn to identfy where an object is in relation to true north (using a gyro compass) and where it is in reguards to the ships heading.

So a contact may be at both 220 and 060 at the same time. to find the true bearing of a ship we had these instruments called alidades (from the arabic alidada which were basically a monocular set on top of a gyrocompass. Draw a line on the contact and read the bearing... easier said than done in rough seas...
Title: Re: The Vicomte de Superfly
Post by: Archon on February 15, 2005, 02:03:12 AM
I guess so. The part that I know would really get me about being on a ship like that is being so close to everyone all the time. I am extremely antisocial, and if I am too close to other people for an extended period of time I get kind of agitated and angry.
Title: Re: The Vicomte de Superfly
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on February 15, 2005, 02:05:22 AM
yeah we all did... 100 people in 270 feet X 40 ft x 35 ft of space (which doesnt account for the engine room, helicopter hanger, office space and ships stores [storage]) gets on your nerves after a week. Sleeping in a room with 35 people in a six foot by two foot area is rough... thats why we'd always have an end of patrol brawl.... to liven things up...

But after 2 years you kind of loved them too.

Yeah, but with me, it doesn't matter who the people I am together with are. I need to be alone, that is just me. Although, those brawls do sound appealing. I have never been in a real fight, and I really think it is time.

Trouble
Oh trouble set me free
I have seen your face
And it's too much too much for me

Trouble
Oh trouble can't you see
You're eating my heart away
And there's nothing much left of me

I've drunk your wine
You have made your world mine
So won't you be fair
So won't you be fair

I don't want no more of you
So won't you be kind to me
Just let me go where
I'll have to go there

Trouble
Oh trouble move away
I have seen your face
and it's too much for me today

Trouble
Oh trouble can't you see
You have made me a wreck
Now won't you leave me in my misery

I've seen your eyes
and I can see death's disguise
Hangin' on me
Hangin' on me

I'm beat, I'm torn
Shattered and tossed and worn
Too shocking to see
Too shocking to see

Trouble
Oh trouble move from me
I have paid my debt
Now won't you leave me in my misery

Trouble
Oh trouble please be kind
I don't want no fight
And I haven't got a lot of time

People keep telling me that, but I maintain that that is only true if you don't like fighting or if you are losing, or both. I like fighting so far, and I am pretty good at it, so I want to at least know what a real fight is.

Why is that?
Title: Re: The Vicomte de Superfly
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on February 15, 2005, 02:20:01 AM
well everyone is different, but generally theres too much adrenaline to think clearly after the first few blows... then combat becomes a mess,... throw in a knife, or steel toed boots and things get deadly fast, without even trying...

When its all over your body has to deal with all that adrenaline, and the end result is bad. A lot of people get sick a lot just collapse or start crying...
And thats just the mental part, not the injury you might have sustained
lots of chemicals going off in the brain...
Title: Re: The Vicomte de Superfly

Well I don't think that I would respond like that, but I guess I won't know until I need to fight someone. I am not really looking to get into a fight, but at the same time, if I needed to fight someone, I would be happy to do so.
Title: Re: The Vicomte de Superfly
Post by: MsFish on February 15, 2005, 02:28:05 AM
Call me a girl, but I really don't see why you'd want to get into a fight in the first place. Just messing around with friends and goofing off, I can see. Actually getting into a fight where people are trying to hurt you for real? Why would you want to do that?
Title: Re: The Vicomte de Superfly
Post by: Archon on February 15, 2005, 02:31:51 AM
For me, I just like fighting. I have an older brother that I used to fight with all of the time, and it was fun. I am good at it, there is another reason. I would only fight someone that I hated, or was very angry at, so call me evil, but I would take pleasure in hurting that person.

Pitocin is of the devil. It is evil. It is a torture device formulated especially for already suffering pregnant women. It hurts about ten times worse than natural labor.

She was only on Picton for three hours before the baby came. Pushing only lasted 5 minutes without to much damage, way less then the first one. Since she had an epidoral, she only felt a few effects from Pitocin so it didn't bother her that much. Although I could see that this labor was going to be much more intense then the first, and I thought that the Pitocin might have something to do with it. Luckly we didn't have to deal with that aspect, thank you epiderals! Bad part for me was running on no sleep since I had just gotten off a 13 hour shift running around my billion dollar stair stepper. I felt just about worthless.

Thank you Fish, Oldone, Bones and EP. I'll get some pictures on the web soon (that is realativly speaking) if you guys are intrested in seeing her. Talk to you later, and Happy late V day!

Really? it's 7pm - 3am,and I think I will like it MUCH better than this 8-4 crap I've been doing for the last week and a half. I can't function that early, and I never see my husband who works best at night.

And, should finances demand that I get a part time job, it will be easier to do so with this schedule.

*shrugs* I know they're weird hours, but I also know I'm making the right decision.

Jeffe, that's an excellent question, one that hopefully I'll be able to answer in more detail tomorrow. ;D My job title is Night Clerk/Editor. Apparently I will be processing paperwork and doing some very very light editing.

Valentines day is gone, but it doesnt have to be over
by me-

A thief, a highwayman snuck in and kissed you;
your passionate, powder soft, sugar smooth lips red as a candy apple.
Eyes lucent, bosom heaving, heart throbbing, pulse quickening.
leaving a longing
as fingers twine in downy hair, as balmy palms cup your face, your fevered cheeks in feverish hands. Breath so close you gulp as one. And drink to satisfaction.

Farewell to you, my own true love;
I am going far away.
I am bound for California,
But I know that I'll return some day.

So fare thee well, my own true love
When I return united we will be
It's not the leaving of Liverpool that grieves me
But my darling when I think of thee

I'm bound off for California
By the way of stormy Cape Horn
And I'm bound to write you a letter, love
When I am homeward bound
Chorus:

I have signed on a Yankee Clipper ship
Davy Crockett is her name
And Burgess is the Captain of her
And they say she's a floating Hell
Chorus:

I have shipped with Burgess once before
And I think I know him well
If a man's a seaman, he can get along
If not, then he's sure in Hell
Chorus:

Farewell to lower Frederick Street
Ensign Terrace and Park Lane
For I think it will be a long, long time
Before I see you again
Chorus:

Oh the sun is on the harbour, love
And I wish I could remain
For I know it will be a long, long time
Till I see you again
Chorus:

I ran across an interesting song the other day I really liked. I forget the artist, but its called the Highwayman. Here's the lyrics.

I was a highwayman
Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
And many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
And many a soldier lost his life blood on my blade
They finally hung me in the spring of '25
But I am still alive

I was a sailor
And I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide
I sailed a schooner 'round the horn to Mexico
I went aloft to furl the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they say that I got killed
But I am living still

I was a dam builder
Across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called bolder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around
It all goes round and round and round and round
Ba, da da da da dum

I'll fly a starship
Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a Highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will still remain
And I'll be back again
Ba ba ba ba ba, da da da da

This is a poem by a 13th century islamic poet Rumi

The Way of Love

The Way of Love is not a subtle argument. The door there is
devastation. Birds make great circles of their freedom.
How do they learn it?
They fall.
And by falling, they're given wings.

Lovedogs by Rumi

One night a man was crying,
Allah! Allah!
His lips grew sweet with the praising,
Until a cynic said,
So! I have heard you
calling out, but have you ever
gotten any response?

The man had no answer to that.
He quit praying and fell into a confused sleep.

He dreamed he saw Khidr, the guide of souls,
in a thick, green foliage.
Why did you stop praising?
Because Ive never heard anything back
This longing you express is the return message

The grief you cry out from
Draws you toward union.
Your pure sadness
that wants help
is the secret cup.

Listen to the moan of a dog for its master.
That whining is the connection.

There are love dogs
no one knows the names of.

Give your life
to be one of them.

In the dark of the night, a voice
Slow and sultry, salty and sweet
A shiver down the spine
Like warm honey on an ice cube
You're like the bee, busy at building me up
Fixing my inside and smoothing my outside.
But my skin is paper, and your voice is a balm.
Breathing half formed words that tickle my ears,
Taking my heart and wrapping it in your loving arms..

This is one of my favorites. It's Yeats. He was crazy, but he wrote some cool poems.

When You are Old

When you are old and gray and full of sleep
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true;
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face.

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead,
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

Hmm, needs a bit more work

I sojourn beyond death for the promised land
A place for me that the gods have planned
A mind clouded with pain
Swiming in liquid fire
I heard my name as a legion of voices cried out
There is no suffering they go without
Forward I trod, with an empty hand
Its the passion that my heart demands
Filled with hills so green,
Water that is sweeter than fruit
And a diet of precious manaroot
Please let me into my place of pursuit
So foward I trod with nothing in hand
Let me into the place my heart demands
On the far shores of the river Styx I wait
Come now far as I can
No coin for the ferryman is my doomed fate

To Lucasta, going beyond the Seas
By Richard Lovelace
1618-1658
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IF to be absent were to be
        Away from thee;
Or that when I am gone
        You or I were alone;
Then, my Lucasta, might I crave
Pity from blustering wind or swallowing wave.

But I'll not sigh one blast or gale
        To swell my sail,
Or pay a tear to 'suage
        The foaming blue god's rage;
For whether he will let me pass
Or no, I'm still as happy as I was.

Though seas and land betwixt us both,
        Our faith and troth,
        Like separated souls,
        All time and space controls:
Above the highest sphere we meet
Unseen, unknown; and greet as Angels greet.

        So then we do anticipate
        Our after-fate,
And are alive i' the skies,
If thus our lips and eyes
        Can speak like spirits unconfined
In Heaven, their earthy bodies left behind.

For Eagle
is he all alone, on the end of an electron paradise, where greek myth and modern magic mingle
as moon slides behind the clouds, and stars pulse in haughty brilliance. Are you out there, a SETI program in your own life, or do you wander blind between the firmament and loam.
He is the Eagle Prince, Noble King of carrion,
Fear him! and the power of his presence.
snatched from hades, for cunning crimes he's reticent
now to wander and to roam 'neathe the nether and gloam.

More Yeats. This one has to be read aloud.

Who will go drive with Fergus now,
And pierce the deep wood's woven shade,
And dance upon the level shore?
Young man, lift up your russet brow,
And lift your tender eyelids, maid,
And brood on hopes and fear no more.

And no more turn aside and brood
Upon love's bitter mystery;
For Fergus rules the brazen cars,
And rules the shadows of the wood,
And the white breast of the dim sea
And all dishevelled wandering stars.

This one is Hopkins. I love it.

Not, I'll not, carrion comfort, Despair, not feast on thee;
Not untwist—slack they may be—these last strands of man
In me ór, most weary, cry I can no more. I can;
Can something, hope, wish day come, not choose not to be.
But ah, but O thou terrible, why wouldst thou rude on me
Thy wring-world right foot rock? lay a lionlimb against me? scan
With darksome devouring eyes my bruisèd bones? and fan,
O in turns of tempest, me heaped there; me frantic to avoid thee and flee?

Why? That my chaff might fly; my grain lie, sheer and clear.
Nay in all that toil, that coil, since (seems) I kissed the rod,
Hand rather, my heart lo! lapped strength, stole joy, would laugh, chéer.
Cheer whom though? the hero whose heaven-handling flung me, fóot tród
Me? or me that fought him? O which one? is it each one? That night, that year
Of now done darkness I wretch lay wrestling with (my God!) my God.

I think I got the second verse done

I sojourn beyond death for the promised land
A place for me that the gods have planned
Fear and doubt abound
I step into the waters
Like liquid fire, pain and passion I can't ignore
Both push me beyond mortal realm to distant shore
Is there a test that gods could create
That could keep men from the pearly gates?
Filled with hills so green,
Water that is sweeter than fruit
And a diet of precious manaroot
I will get that which I pursue
Should all I reach is the depths of these waters
My desire will still not falter
I'll claw my way through mud and sand
Whatever it takes to reach the promised lands.
There is no test which even gods create
That could keep me from those pearly gates.
This is my birthright given by the Fates.

A Red, Red Rose
[Hear Red, Red Rose]
1794
Type: Poem

O my Luve's like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June:
O my Luve's like the melodie,
That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare-thee-weel, my only Luve!
And fare-thee-weel, a while!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' 'twere ten thousand mile!

Rose of All the World
I am here myself; as though this heave of effort
At starting other life, fulfilled my own;
Rose-leaves that whirl in colour round a core
Of seed-specks kindled lately and softly blown

By all the blood of the rose-bush into being -
Strange, that the urgent will in me, to set
My mouth on hers in kisses, and so softly
To bring together two strange sparks, beget

Another life from our lives, so should send
The innermost fire of my own dim soul out-spinning
And whirling in blossom of flame and being upon me!
That my completion of manhood should be the beginning

Another life from mine! For so it looks.
The seed is purpose, blossom accident.
The seed is all in all, the blossom lent
To crown the triumph of this new descent.

Is that it, woman? Does it strike you so?
The Great Breath blowing a tiny seed of fire
Fans out your petals for excess of flame,
Till all your being smokes with fine desire?

Or are we kindled, you and I, to be
One rose of wonderment upon the tree
Of perfect life, and is our possible seed
But the residuum of the ecstasy?

How will you have it? - the rose is all in all,
Or the ripe rose-fruits of the luscious fall?
The sharp begetting, or the child begot?
Our consummation matters, or does it not?

To me it seems the seed is just left over
From the red rose-flowers' fiery transience;
Just orts and slarts; berries that smoulder in the bush
Which burnt just now with marvellous immanence.

Blossom, my darling, blossom, be a rose
Of roses unchidden and purposeless; a rose
For rosiness only, without an ulterior motive;
For me it is more than enough if the flower unclose.

Fear is bred by fear
For you reap what you sow
So please take a care, my dear
Or was this something you didn't know?
Remember what I say
Life needs a careful eye
Your boat is coming in someday
Take a good look and see what I imply.
Everything is choice
Free will is mortal fate
What you choose will be voiced
Best shout it out before its too late.
Sometimes you have to take the uphill road
To find what gifts the Fates have bestowed

Okay, I tweaked it around a bit, like I knew I would. So here is version 2.

THE PROMISED LANDS
I sojourn beyond death for the promised land
A place for me that the gods have planned
A mind clouded with pain
Swimming in liquid fire
I heard my name as the Host cried out:
You must suffer now or forever go without.
So I march forward with empty hands,
Following orders that Hope commands.
Filled with hills so green,
Water sweeter than fruit,
And a diet of precious manaroot.
Please let me into my place of pursuit
I left it all behind for the promised lands
Now I don't have the two coins Charon demands
Come now far as I can...
On the far shores of the river Styx I wait
No coin for the ferryman is my doomed fate

Spent all my life seeking promised lands
Only to get arrested by the Fates' remands
Fear and doubt abound
I step into the waters
Like liquid fire, pain and passion I can't ignore
Both push me beyond mortal realm to distant shore
Is there a test that gods could create
That would keep men from the pearly gates?
A green land of such repute,
That eternal joy is absolute.
A place to good to be true...
I will get that which I pursue...
Even if I drown in the river water
This one desire will not falter.
Be it the bottomless Abyss or the fiery lakes
Nothing will stop me from reaching those gates.
I'll write my own destiny and damn the Fates.

Oh, and as far as the nickname goes, rumor has it that that's the place you're most likely to be attacked because of all the trees and it's not very well-lit, etc. I've actually heard of attacks there, too, so it's best not to walk there alone at night, and if you have to, to be alert.

Hows your new Job fuzzy?

Um, did I not regale you with the saga of the vanishing job?

The job that I was supposed to have in Draper starting this wednesday turned out to be not possible. I was told all through HR and the interview, everthing, $9/hr, full time, 7-3am.

Then I get up there for my first day and the person training me is like, "I don't know what they're smoking, but you're not paid hourly, this job pays piece-rate, and ou don't start until 8:30pm." And most of the employees do make from $9-10/hr equivalent, but then on the other side there's only about 4 or 5 hours of work a night and then you run out. Argh. So I told HR thanks for the offer, but it really changed a lot of things, and i couldn't accept it. HR apologized profusely for the "mix-up" and were really nice about it, but apart from the feasibility of the job, I don't know if I want to work for a company where the person who manages a department doesn't know anything about the jobs in said department.

So, still jobless.

So its good all-around.

I got the first 5 Hellsing magnas. That's all of them, but there is at least 1 more coming out. Probably like a thousand pages in total, which ended up being about 3 hours of reading. And that was going slow. Cool, but not very time consuming.

My sister got me some dvds and my brother got me Enemy Mine on dvd (that was one I had been trying to find for awhile), plus he took me out to Constantine, which I really liked. Pretty fun birthday so far, and I'm not even 3 hours into it yet. Although that news about Gonzo shaking hands with Charon is sad, I'll miss his books.

I think I'll go watch some more movies before I go to bed, so later! My birthday is a holiday, so hopefully everyone else has work off and can have some fun too! heh heh.

I like the coats cut too... nice lines, nice lapel (wide but not too wide) the belt makes it more feminine. It would be really cute if it was double breasted...

Loved it. In fact, I think I might want to own it myself. That and Shall We Dance? which I saw on the plane this morning. I saw the Japanese version several years ago and liked it, and I think the American version with Richard Gere really preserved the feeling of the original. Also makes me want to get out and dance again. I'd kind of given it up in the last few years, both because of my knees (which have affected my weight), and because I'm frustrated with trying to find dance partners. It made me think (once again) that I should just find a class and find partners through the class, like Brenna did when she was competing.

No, I was a good girl and read my homework (except when I was watching Shall We Dance). But I plan on reading it on the T Thursday and Friday, then mailing it on Saturday, if that's okay.

To Be Good

Im obssessive
A bit possessive
I dont know when to stop and when to be aggressive
Im a mess
Cant handle stress
I dont know when to lie and when to confess

I know I should
And I think I could
Try a little harder
To be good

Im lazy
Often hazy
I dont know when Im sane and when Im acting crazy
Im a crab
All things drab
I dont know when to drive and when to hail a cab

I know I should
And I think I could
Try a little harder
To be good

I’m obssessive
A bit possessive
I dont know when to stop and when to be aggressive
Im a mess
Cant handle stress
I dont know when to lie and when to confess

I know I should
And I think I could

To be good
I know I should
And I think I could
Try a little harder
To be good
To be good

I could really see my brother-in-law Curt wearing those.

Let me put this into context. To our high school thespian graduation Curt wore a very nice suit and canvas keds that had the batman logo all over them.

In high school I had a big box full of chuck Taylor All Stars of assorted colors. As long as I had a left shoe and a right shoe, I was good.
