Mississippi- Bob Dylan

Every step of the way we walk the line
Your days are numbered, so are mine
Time is pilin' up, we struggle and we scrape
We're all boxed in, nowhere to escape

City's just a jungle, more games to play
Trapped in the heart of it, trying to get away
I was raised in the country, I been workin' in the town
I been in trouble ever since I set my suitcase down

Got nothing for you, I had nothing before
Don't even have anything for myself anymore
Sky full of fire, pain pourin' down
Nothing you can sell me, I'll see you around

All my powers of expression and thoughts so sublime
Could never do you justice in reason or rhyme
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Well, the devil's in the alley, mule's in the stall
Say anything you wanna, I have heard it all
I was thinkin' about the things that Rosie said
I was dreaming I was sleeping in Rosie's bed

Walking through the leaves, falling from the trees
Feeling like a stranger nobody sees
So many things that we never will undo
I know you're sorry, I'm sorry too

Some people will offer you their hand and some won't
Last night I knew you, tonight I don't
I need somethin' strong to distract my mind
I'm gonna look at you 'til my eyes go blind

Well I got here following the southern star
I crossed that river just to be where you are
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

Well my ship's been split to splinters and it's sinking fast
I'm drownin' in the poison, got no future, got no past
But my heart is not weary, it's light and it's free
I've got nothin' but affection for all those who've sailed with me

Everybody movin' if they ain't already there
Everybody got to move somewhere
Stick with me baby, stick with me anyhow
Things should start to get interesting right about now

My clothes are wet, tight on my skin
Not as tight as the corner that I painted myself in
I know that fortune is waitin' to be kind
So give me your hand and say you'll be mine

Well, the emptiness is endless, cold as the clay
You can always come back, but you can't come back all the way
Only one thing I did wrong
Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

America--Ventura Highway

Chewing on a piece of grass
Walking down the road
Tell me, how long you gonna stay here, joe?
Some people say this town don't look good in snow
You don't care, I know

Ventura highway in the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger than moonshine
You're gonna go I know

'cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair
And the days surround your daylight there
Seasons crying no despair
Alligator lizards in the air, in the air

Did di di di dit ...

Wishin' on a falling star
Waitin' for the early train
Sorry boy, but I've been hit by purple rain
Aw, come on, joe, you can always
Change your name
Thanks a lot, son, just the same

Ventura highway in the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger than moonshine
You're gonna go I know

'cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair
And the days surround your daylight there
Seasons crying no despair
Alligator lizards in the air, in the air

Did di di di dit ...

No Myth --Michael Penn

So, she says its time she goes
but wanted to be sure I know
she hopes we can be friends
I think yeah, I guess we can say I
but didn't think to ask her why
she blocked her eyes and drew the curtains
with knots I've got yet to untie
what if I were Romeo in black jeans
what if I was Heathcliff, its no myth
     maybe she's just looking for
     someone to dance with
See, it was just too soon to tell
and looking for some parallel
can be an endless game
We said goodbye before hello
my secrets she will never know
and if I dig a hole to China
I'll catch the first junk to Soho
what if I were Romeo in black jeans
what if I was Heathcliff, it's no myth
     maybe she's just looking for
     someone to dance with
Sometime from now you'll bow to pressure
some things in life you cannot measure by degrees
I'm between the poles and the equator
don't send no private investigator to find me please
'less he speaks Chinese
and can dance like Astaire overseas
what if I were Romeo in black jeans
what if I was Heathcliff, it's no myth
     maybe she's just looking for
     someone to dance with

Somebody's cold one is giving me chills.

And The Superfly theme song
Superfly-- Curtis Mayfield
Darkest of night
With the moon shinin' bright
There's a set goin' strong
Lotta things goin' on
The man of the hour
Has an air of great power
The dudes have envied him for so long

Oooh, Superfly
You're gonna make your fortune by and by
But if you lose, don't ask no questions why
The only game you know is "Do or Die"
Ah-ha-ha

Hard to understand
What a hell of a man
This cat of the slum
Had a mind, wasn't dumb
But a weakness was shown
'Cause his hustle was wrong
His mind was his own
But the man lived alone

Oooh, Superfly
You're gonna make your fortune by and by
But if you lose, don't ask no questions why
The only game you know is "Do or Die"
Ah-ha-ha

The game he plays he plays for keeps
Hustlin' cards on ghetto streets
Tryin' ta get over
(That's what he tryin' to do, y'all)
Takin' all that he can take
Gamblin' with the odds of fate
Tryin' ta get over
Tryin' ta get over
Tryin' ta get over
Tryin' ta get over
Woo, Superfly

The aim of his role
Was to move a lot of blow
Ask him his dream
What does it mean
He wouldn't know
"Can't be like the rest"
Is the most he'll confess
But the time's running out
And there's no happiness

Oooh, Superfly
You're gonna make your fortune by and by
But if you lose, don't ask no questions why
The only game you know is "Do or Die"
Ah-ha-ha

Superfly
Superfly
Superfly
Superfly

"Tryin' ta get over... [9x

Best ones I can think of are Mitchell, Santa Claus v Martians, I accuse My Parents, the King Arthur one with Basil Rathbone and some charlies angels clone...

My wife cracks up at that one... especially at the part where all the Buxom women run up the beach at one point and Tom Servo blurts out... "Its double "D" day....

Yeah, I'm okay...but I now have six hours to study for and take two exams.

Shouldn't be too bad though.  The test wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be.  I mostly just have to know who wrote what and why.

It should be better. You had one hour to study for 1 test from farther back last night. Now you have three times as long per test. Good luck!

(personally, I'd break it up, study for 2-2.5 hours, then take the test, then study for the other test the rest of the time).

Just got back. North by Northwest. I love Cary Grant. And I love Hitchcock. Together, they're brilliant. And funny, too. I forgot how funny that movie was.
Title: Re: Superfly in the Iron Mask
Post by: fuzzyoctopus on February 27, 2005, 02:29:19 AM
I have to be in the right mood for Cary Grant. Sometimes he's just too smug for me to handle.   ;D

You know? he's one of those people who always plays himself - like Will Smith. No matter what his character's name is, he's CARY GRANT (tm).
Title: Re: Superfly in the Iron Mask
Post by: stacer on February 27, 2005, 02:49:15 AM
That's true. But he's so good at it. Though his love scene in NbNW really is quite funny to watch. He doesn't quite know what to do with his hands, so they just kind of sit on the back of the girl's head.

So I got a listing for the most amazing New York apartment today, and she's flexible on move-in, so it might actually stay available till May. $815 a month, for a private room on the Upper West Side, with washer-dryer, dishwasher, wireless internet, and a block from Central Park. That's amazing. It's about made my decision.  ;) Of course, I do need to find a job, all that. But that's just icing, after seeing pictures of this apartment!  :D 'Course, depends upon the roommates, too. I'm going to go see it over spring break, if it's still available. But I'm afraid it'll be snapped up.

Oh, which reminds me--just talked to my sister today, and they're probably going to come out for my graduation. Yay! They went out to BYU for my undergrad graduation, too. It's really nice to have family there, especially when you're not expecting anyone to come. Still not sure, but she's looking into it.

Wow.  I want to move to New York!  That's awesome Stacer!

I talked to my mom on the phone today and I told her that she and my dad don't have to come to my graduation.  They don't really want to come out to Utah, and I don't really care that much about the ceremony, so we're just going to not.  I wonder if I'll regret it, but oh well.  We're going to do something fun over the summer instead.

I had the same discussion with my parents. I'd rather the money for the plane rides be spent so *we* could fly to Ohio for a little while.
Title: Re: Superfly in the Iron Mask

Yeah, between plane tickets and rental cars and hotel rooms, my parents are going to save a lot of money by not coming.  So we're going white-water rafting in June with the money.  I'm soooo excited.  So, if I get sad that my parents aren't here in April, I'm just going to think about that.

Wow, whitewater rafting sounds really fun. My sister and bro-in-law went snowboarding while they were in Utah, so it was vacation time for them. I babysat Abram all day (he was 7 months old at the time)--it was hilarious to have him in the baby backpack and have people give me the "I didn't even know you were married!" speech.  :P I know Izzy and Jeff met him that day--don't remember who else was at the HumPub back then. Probably just them. Maybe Kristy.

I'm really excited for it--I can take Abram to the Children's Museum, down to the ducklings and the swan pond, etc. It'll be a blast.

Oh, and if you guys care to see pictures of the apt., I put the link on my lj.

I've come to the sad realization that I have no life.  On the plus side I'm realizing how completely neurotic and focused I was on my job.  On the minus side... um i have nothing to do now but look for a new job and remind myself that i have great hair.

Is it sad that I really love The Carpenters? I've loved them since I was a kid. Currently playing: Top of the World. But the sad songs have always made me cry, too. And the sappy ones--Siiiiing, sing a song, sing it loud, sing it stroooong! I love them.

Wow, I'm gone for a few weeks dealing with the new baby and the SFNC just disapears. Where is everyone?

In case anyone is curious, baby girl (here on refered to as "My Precious") is doing great! Momma had to go to the hospital for an infection, and had to have some surgery, but looks like she will make a quick recovery. Leaves me on Precious duty tongiht, not that that is any different. Has EP been around, cause I really hope to get in a little Maelstrom action between feedings.

Good news, the outage is over. Bad news, back to rotating shift work. Which means, not as many late night sundays to game. But I can be flexible when I'm not working. I'd be happy to email you my schedule if it can help you plan.

Rotating shift work means no day is the best. In five weeks, I have to cover 7 days of days, 7 days of nights, 4 traing days, plus cover anyone who calls in sick. So good days rotate with the shifts.

So I filled my current journal today...the thing lasted me two months, basically.  (Not that it's been an eventful two months or anything.  Goodness.)  That's the shortest time it's ever taken me to fill one.  Usually they last a good six.

Anyway, so I pulled out some of my old journals to read them, because I don't do that as often as I should.  I was reading my journal from when I went to Senegal in spring 2003, and it was neat because I could remember some of the scenes I describe and all...but overall what I realized is that I'm an incredible dork.  It made me want to stop keeping a journal, because I don't need a written record of my dorkyness.   :P

That's my rant about that.
Title: Re: Superfly in the Iron Mask
Post by: fuzzyoctopus on February 28, 2005, 02:39:52 AM
Yeah, I felt much the same way when I found the one I kept during my freshman and sophomore year of high school.  Sophomore year was worst actually.  I was a very miserable dork.
Title: Re: Superfly in the Iron Mask
Post by: MsFish on February 28, 2005, 02:41:30 AM
See, I know that my highschool journals are much much worse, but I can excuse myself for that.  I started keeping a journal when I was fifteen.  I can deal with the fact that I was a dork at fifteen.  But this was two years ago.  I was 21.  This leads me to believe that I'm still a dork, I just don't realize it.

Self awareness can be a terrible terrible thing.

My journal lies among my many things to do when I can't sleep. Others being the net, music and drawing in one of about 4 sketchbooks.

While it's in my head: anyone have any idea about a way of stopping me from waking up at 4am every...single....morning? (This has been going on for bout a week and a half).
Seeing as I can't sleep before about 12, I'm getting 4 hours sleep a night :S

Title: Re: Superfly in the Iron Mask
Post by: stacer on March 01, 2005, 01:33:11 AM
I've been keeping a journal since I was eight. I tried to earlier than that, but I've lost the old journal. My mom wasn't keen on me keeping one before I was eight because she wanted to give me my first journal for my baptism.  ::) I guess I take after my great-grandmother--she kept a journal from 1916 to 1970. Some amazing stuff, though she stopped keeping one about the time she was married, then stopped again when my grandpa was born. Apparently she had a lot of health problems, so I completely understand the gaps.

I like writing in my handwriting journal, but it takes so long, so I've taken to a computer one, but still update my written journal in conjunction with it. There's just something about the handwritten one.

But I never go back and look at the handwritten one. I'm too much of a dork. I usually write when I need the catharsis, which means either moaning about something significant to me at the time, or when I'm depressed. My progeny are going to think I'm a boy-crazy lunatic. But it helps me to work things like that out in words, and then leave it behind. So the online journal I use in a different way, since it's mainly friends-only postings. I actually become informative (though I still have my private rantage)--and I can go back and scan it to remind myself of things I do want to remember much easier than a handwritten one.

Sorry, I'm on my way back to bed. I totally threw my sleeping schedule off tonight--fell asleep right after supper. It was a long day on my feet in bad on-your-feet shoes (good shoes overall, just not for standing 8 hours at a cash register). So I woke up at midnight, made revisions to my paper, and finally emailed it out to the people who had requested it at LTUE.

No, celery needs peanut butter.  Unfortunately if he's going for healthy, the peanut butter has more nutrients than the celery.

Go with radishes, or cauliflower, which are the veggies I can eat plain and raw with no dressing.

"His name is Ted."

If I get stressed, or depressed (usually they go together) I have a friend who suggests we go somewhere with penguins and then take some sleeping pills (I've been getting insomnia lately...). We both get very irritated by school, so we're always talking about escapes of one kind or another. The one with penguins is the best yet. Actually I think it had palm trees as well - good thing we weren't in Biology class at the time ;)

If you can wait a week, since I'm still reading it, I can mail you my copy of Groundhog Day with your book. It's VHS. Probably not the most convenient form of loaning, but there it is.

Still only halfway through Skin So Green and Fine because of homework precedence, but next week is spring break, and I'm not going to New York after all, so I'll have all week to read. Yay! I'm liking it. You know, there's a B&B variant that involves a green snake-man? I just found out while reading something for my folklore class. Haven't read that tale yet (it's a French salon literary fairy tale from the 1600s), but now it makes me wonder if that was also an influence in this tale. I've only gotten to the part where she's in his house and looking all through for him, so don't tell me how it goes beyond that! Will try to finish at least that one tomorrow or Monday.

Wow.  Right on cue.   ;D

I have to filet chicken breasts that are still on the bone, because I don't have the sense to check to see if the chicken is on the bone before I buy it.  And so far I've just massacred it.  Help!
Title: Re: Superfly in the Iron Mask
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on March 06, 2005, 11:21:09 PM
On the bone is good.... You need to find the grain of the meat and debone it... do you have a boning knife? Otherwise you can use a chefs knife and cut it at the thinnest point.
Title: Re: Superfly in the Iron Mask
Post by: MsFish on March 06, 2005, 11:23:08 PM
I have a very very dull kitchen knife.  Or a serrated knife.  These are my options.

I don't know what the grain of the meat is...and I don't know what you mean.

*Fish glares at her chicken some more.

I probably wouldn't be this frustrated if I'd eaten in the last 23 hours.
Title: Re: Superfly in the Iron Mask
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on March 06, 2005, 11:35:28 PM
Use the serrated...

the grain refers to the grain of the muscle...

But slip the serrated knife along the bone and watch you fingers...

never ever cut with a dull knife...
ever

Your more likely to hurt yourself...

Title: Re: Superfly in the Iron Mask

You can get a whetstone get it nice and wet with water and holding your knife at a 45 degree angle cut down the length of the stone firmly... then flip the angle and the knife and cut the other way. The idea is to sharpen each side evenly. They make diamond sharpeners too that do both sides equally.

I love my new knife set for this reason. Well, technically it's not new anymore, as I bought it when the girls in my last apartment threw out my knife set (I'm hoping it was on accident) when we moved out. Just as well, the old set was serrated and you can't sharpen them. Even if you can, they were so flimsy it wasn't worth it. Anyway, the new set is Chicago Cutlery and came with a sharpener. Which I should probably use on the steak knives; they're getting rather dull.

no, the evac was a precaution... but everyone either went to shelters or to relatives houses...

Acid fumes arent too bad... a worst case scenario would have been chlorine... then it would have been the potential for 8000 dead.

Fuzzy--you see, I am also too stupid to do my own taxes.  Unfortunately, I don't have anyone but me to do my taxes.  So for the last four years income taxes have resulted in me sitting on the floor surrounded by paperwork bawling my eyes out for hours until the numbers somehow fall into place, probably by the grace of God.  I haven't been ready to deal with that yet this year, so I'm putting it off.

I know about not wanting to go shopping before going out of town. I didn't go shopping the whole week before leaving for Utah, and ended up not really stocking up for two weeks after that because of all the running around catching up I was doing. And I'm headed out again in a week, going to Florida for the second round of paper presentation. I'm not looking forward to traveling again, but it should be a good experience professionally.

98.7%

Interestingly, that's the exact amount of DNA we have in common with chimpanzees.

60% with slugs.

40% with cabbages.

Jeffe,

I succumbed today and bought some Rooibos Tea. Now it'll take me a few days to work up the courage to try it.

Of all the gifts we have received
One is most precious and most terrible
The will of each of us is free
It's in our hands

And if we hear a voice
If he speaks again, our silent father
All he will tell us is the choice
Is in our hands

Our hands can choose to drop the knife
Our hearts can choose to stop the hating
For ev'ry moment of our life
Is the beginning...

There is no journey gone so far
So far we cannot stop and change direction
No doom is written in the stars
It's in our hands.

We cannot know what wil occur
Just make the journey worth the taking
And pray we're wiser than we were
In the beginning
It's the beginning
Now we begin...

Children of Eden
Grant us your pardon
All that we leave to you
is the unknown

Children of Eden
Seek for your garden
You and your children to come
Some day to come home

I tried the Rooibos yesterday. The flavor reminds me of something, and it's driving me crazy that I haven't pinpointed it quite yet. Perhaps I've just had it before.

I'm glad I got the Madagascar Vanilla Red. I almost picked up the spice one...ew.

When I was young, I used to wonder, didn't you,
Why Mr. Spock had one head instead of two.
How creatures who are not our distant kin
Would hit on breathing through the pipe that food goes in.
It taught us an unscientific view,
The sameness in a Federation crew.

Chorus:

You'd think the dance of life for several billion years
Would produce more variation than just pointed ears.
It violates the laws we thought we knew,
The sameness in a Federation crew.

We're closer to a radish than a Romulan,
An unrelated creature of a foreign sun.
How can a Klingon/human couple mate?
She's closer to the gak that squirms upon her plate.
How could each evolve from different gobs of goo
To the sameness of a Federation crew?

(Chorus)

What makes a moose a moose and not a kangaroo?
Remoteness for a hundred million years or two.
And breeding for a mere few hundred years
Can yield a dog with floppy or with pointed ears.
No billion-year-old seeding program grew
The sameness of a Federation crew.

(Chorus)

Did convergent evolution shape them all by chance,
To fit in Star Fleet's regulation shoes and pants?
What narcissism makes five-fingered hands
Prerequisites for venturing from native lands?
There's more richness in a single planet's zoo
Than the sameness in a Federation crew.

(Chorus)

I like.

However, obviously the person who wrote that never watched the TNG episode "The Chase".

Everyone knows the humanoid worlds were seeded.

No billion-year-old seeding program grew
The sameness of a Federation crew.

Written by Bob Kanefsky, btw. Off his Roundworm CD.

Well I disagree with Bob's doubtful ways.

While we were playing Magic at lunch today, an employee started singing us a song about how people used to have lives but now all they do is play Magic.  He said it was a folk song. I looked at him and said it sounded more like a filk, and he about had a heart attack.  Apparently he's a big symposium goer.  Recognized your name.  No, I don't remember his.

If you see him again, try to learn his name!

Well, I was thinking about it, and if you take Greg Bear's "Darwin's Radio" approach, the unclassified DNA bits in our genome could be encoded viruses that activate themselves every few dozen million years to create an evolutionary burst, and these could have been programmed by the progenitors (or whatever their name was). But without a mechanism like that, and left to our current understanding of genetics, seeding primordial soup just wouldn't get the job done.

Darwin's Radio and its sequel were good books, by the way.

The Reptilians are coming, run for your lives!  Don't use the elevators (getting you trapped in a steel box is exactly what they want).  Avoid the Chemtrails and viral matter falling from the skies.  Trust no one, and use reverse speach to discover the truth.  If you must, join the Freemasons, but do not let them secretly insert the 666 identity chip while doing a routine blood transfusion.  There you will learn the moon landing was a hoax, propagated by the disinformation unit of the CIA due to secret alien invasion.

Hmm... I'd go further, but I'm running out of wacky stuff.

Doh, forgot crop circles and cattle mutilation.
