Title: Mistborn Wallpaper One
Post by: EUOL on March 12, 2007, 02:04:46 AM
Folks,

I looked on Naomi Novik's site, and lo and behold, she had wallpapers for download!  Why didn't I think of that?

So, I've spent my Sunday afternoon playing with my favorite toy (Photoshop Elements) and trying to piece together something that looked good to me.  I'm not a visual artist, and this will perhaps make the Photoshop experts cringe, but here's what I came up with:

800 by 600 (http://www.brandonsanderson.com/graphics/MistbornWallpaper1-800.jpg)
1024 by 768 (http://www.brandonsanderson.com/graphics/Mistborn%20Wallpaper%20One%201028.jpg)
1680 by 1050 for you screwy people like me (http://www.brandonsanderson.com/graphics/Mistborn%20Wallpaper%20One%201680.jpg)

The art is by the talented Isaac Stewart (http://www.nethermore.com/") (a.k.a. Nethermore, a.k.a. Ctz Zed here on the TWG.)  I got the backgrounds from a nice person on Deviant Art named
merely-anger. (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/26310222/?qo=14&q=wallpapers&qh=boost%3Apopular+age_sigma%3A24h+age_scale%3A5")

What do you guys think?  Worth posting on my site?  I know it's a bit busy, but I tend to like wallpapers like that myself.  If I do another of these, I'll try for something more minimalist.

That kinda looks like a spoiler.

I see 8 pairs of things that look a lot like the symbols that are associated with the metals -- therefore 16 in total.

And, why not one more?  Seeing as to how I can't sleep.

1024 (http://www.brandonsanderson.com/graphics/Inquisitor%20Wallpaper%201024.jpg)

800 (http://www.brandonsanderson.com/graphics/Inquisitor%20Wallpaper%20800.jpg)

As one might imagine, they both look much better when they're the right size.  Anyway, I got the face for this one right here. (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/30755660/?qo=124&q=bald+stock&qh=boost%3Apopular+age_sigma%3A24h+age_scale%3A5)   My Photoshop Fu has grown slightly, though I realize these are fairly amateur.  Still, they were fun to make.  Same question as before.  Worth putting up on my site?  (Assuming I can get permission to use this face outside of Deviantart--otherwise I'll have to link there for the wallpaper.)

Nifty. Definitely will have to go on the site somewhere. Maybe a download and freestuff section.

Inquisitors freak me out. But I really like the first one.

I've set the first one as my desktop at  work!

I like the first better, but that might have something to do with the second making me laugh out loud for some reason. I never can take CG people seriously, even when they have spikes through their eyes and they're qouting the Lord Ruler.

That's freaky cool. But, if that's the Lord Ruler's last line before he dies, why do you have an Inquisitor saying it? Sorta misleading. Maybe you could have a quote from that Inquisitor that was stalking Vin all that time--the one who was all happy to finally catch her and Sazed.

That is a good thought Shrain. It might make more sense to those who have read the book. But the Inquisitors did think that they were getting Carte Blanche to basically do whatever they wanted to do at that point, so perhaps that was where the inspiration for the Inquisitor in the picture comes from. I don't know, but I really like the artwork. The colors are very striking.

The first one looks more professional and in some ways is more understandable to somebody who has yet to experience Mistborn.

I would have thought that the guy was wearing funky sunglasses or was born blind and was an odd picture, but not very appealing as a graphic representation from the second -- had I not known that he was an inquisitor.

I thought it was Vin Desil.

I reall like the first one.  It's my desktop.  Not too keen on the second.

EUOL, that really does look great.  Any chance of getting a higher res one for those of use without widescreen monitors?  1600 by 1200 perhaps?  That'd be wonderful.

Who is Vin Desil (and is there a Vin Unleaded?)

Once I get a tablet, I'm definitely making some wallpapers.

...if you let me.

You can check out my fanart on a different thread. But oooOoOO...I have ideas.

Hahaha...more like a personal rant, ack, sorry, ignore me if you'd like.

"I like it."

"He likes it! Mikey, he likes it!"

(Animaniacs)

I have to agree, the first is better than the second. Maybe if we had a different view of the Inquisitor and a quote from one of them instead of the Lord Ruler... Like where he's looking straight ahead with one of those scary, creepy, creepy smiles.

I thought he was wearing glasses until I looked closer.

The most effective pose to show the nails would be at (assuming straight on is a 0 degree angle) a 110-135 degree angle so that you can see the side of the face -- see no glasses are holding in the nails and have the backs of the nails stick out of the eyes.

But fundamentally I believe that it's hard to see what they are without knowing ahead of time.  The guy in the corner of the book merely looks blind to me.

The menacing fellow on the book cover is merely an Obligator, not an Inquisitor, actually. He's got all these tatoos and such, but no spikes like an Inquisitor. Obligators are more the beaurocratic arm of the Lord Ruler if you remember, instead of the militant-mystical arm like the Inquisitors. ;)

Oh, here's an interesting bit of insider info, though: Brandon said that the idea to put an Inquisitor on the cover was discussed, but that it was decided it would just turn out too "gruesome" so they went w/ an Obligator instead.

Edit: If you want to see an Iquisitor in a more "real life" fashion, check out this thread I started a while ago:  http://www.timewastersguide.com/forum/index.php?topic=5089.0

I seem to recall having seen the version with the nails through the eyes.  Did I dream that up, or was it posted a while back?

I dunno, Parker. If so, I don't think I ever saw it. But I would sure be interested in checking it out if an actual Mistborn I sketch was done showing a member of the Steel Priesthood.

There's some allusions to the cover with spikes.  But I forget where I saw it.

The problem with the #2 wallpaper is mostly just my weak Photoshop.  I couldn't get the spikes to match the face right, and so I had to use a filter.  It would look much better drawn, I think, but I'm even worse at drawing than photoshoping.

Mostly, it was just me having fun.  I intend to try again one of these days.  We shall see what I come up with.

Oh, and here's a link to a 1600 by 1200 version of wallpaper one, Morinar:

I think I got it looking good.

wowzers. That's awesome. I hadn't seen that before, even though I've been frequenting the boards for a while. There's no mistaking them as Inquisitors there. Oh, and the ax is a nice detail too. Thanks, EUOL.

I gotta admit, I think that's a pretty cool drawing, I like it better than what was used, though I suppose that would have driven away some potential readers.

Collector's Edition!  :P

For some reason I always pictured the spikes going the other way (so that the pointy end was coming out the eyes). This is not necessarily the fault of the descriptions because I'm not very good at interpreting descriptions as I tend to skim rather than read (especially when I'm excited about what I'm reading).

I had known that they were supposed to be pointed that way, but I had actually pictured them the other way, too, just because I couldn't picture how they would look any other way without them looking just bizarre. Now that I see the way you portrayed them though, driven all the way through their head, they actually make them seem more mysterious and menacing. Also, interestingly enough, I like your portrayal much better than this sketch for the actual cover. Speaking of picturing things weird, I always pictured the Inquisitors having completely grey skin. I don't know if this is actually the way they were described, or if I am just deriving it from somewhere.
