Here's some love for you, Complete Psionic is in, though it's going to need some editing.  I'm quite tired right now and I think I got creative with when I did or didn't capitalize words and stuff.  Anyway I'm going to add some links to other articles now and if SE doesn't add the amazon link I'll do that from work.

I'm seeing Pirates of the Caribbean 2:Dead Man's Chest in 2 hours.  It doesn't open until 7 July but I'm going to ask if I can post a review a week or so early.  Just a heads up.

Considering our Editors are MIA I'd say go for it, no one's here to stop you even if they wanted.

I was speaking of getting permission from the marketing company that invited me to the screening.  Just FYI.

Hey, has anyone already got dibs on reviewing Lady in the Water? I thought I might give it a go if that's okay.

Edit: Oh, and what about Click? Anyone? If not, I'm up for reviewing that one too.

There are no dibs. There are only submissions.

I believe in the past we have said we're will to accept multiple reviews of the same book, movie, game, or whatever, as long as the reviews have some credibility (i.e. your not a spammer ).

It's because Fell has been MIA for almost 3 weeks due to work and other commitments and SE's been busy too.  I would post it but usually I wait until those above me ask since it's not my job to post articles.

I'll chat with SE about it now.

I failed to get Geek Girl done, again.  But on the upside, I wrote to reviews that I just submitted.  The one for Kitty should probably go up before the other one, as that's a more recent release and a book that was given to me to review.

I'm hoping to get a geek girl up in the next couple of days to go up whenever there's room.  I'm still shooting for getting back to my regular friday bi-weekly thing, but life's been nuts of late.

Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on July 24, 2006, 11:22:05 AM
I don't normally do this, but here's the (tentative) schedule for the next two weeks, just so people know what I'm expecting.

M July 24: The Knight
Tu July 25: Collection of short things that have been sitting in the waiting file for months
W July 26: Kitty Goes to Washington
Th July 27: Dare we hope for a new TW(i)G article?
F July 28: Nerdery 39

M July 31: Arabat
Tu Aug 1: Page 33 # 16
W Aug 2:
Th Aug 3:
F Aug 4: Geek Girl #16

Note that the schedule is incredibly fluid. Things change every time I get new information. For example, I usually get notified about movie reviews a day or two before they run. As soon as I learn about them, I try to insert them to run as soon as appropriate (depending on movie release date, agreements with the marketers if appropriate, and diversity of material). This schedule includes three book reviews. So I spread them out

The main thing I'm playing with right now is Fish telling me she has a GG column coming in soon (see prev. post) whereas I have no information about the date a new Nerdery will show up. Since we have run any of these columns for a long time, I just may swap projected weeks and do P33 and GG this week. This would put the material I'm confident in having earlier so others have more time. (esp since I know I can have a P33 in tomorrow, but I'm not sure about the TW(i)G one). 42, are you comfortable with this swap?
Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love
Post by: 42 on July 24, 2006, 11:32:28 AM
Well, I've started writing new nerdery articles.

I'm hoping to get caught up on a lot of things since I have today free to do things because of the holiday.
Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on July 24, 2006, 05:16:56 PM
So the question is, will Geek Girl or Nerdery get to me first? That will determine what I run this week. Though maybe I'll just shove P33 in tomorrow anyway, since I'm not of necessity linked to Geek Girl.

42, how would you feel if we moved Nerdery to Thursdays? I think it would be a better day since movie reviews often can't run till Friday (not the case this week, since I don't know of any reviews ready -- but just in general).

Okay, I submitted a book review for a young adult novel. To be posted whenever you need it. And it didn't have any html in it, because I don't remember html codes and it's very late for me to try to re-learn something like that. So I hope it's okay.  :)

Let me know if you need me to send it in another format, like as a word document in an email. Thanks!
Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love

Na, HTML isn't necessary for submissions (though it is helpful) as long as you've got basic paragraph formatting already in.  I usually add all the HTML that's needed when it's missing anyway and that only takes a few minutes.

Roger, Roger.

Now since there's some TWG monies going into Worldcon I expect articles from people, Fish I'm looking at you for at least one and I can get Fell to write one, even if it's a wrap up article.

If anyone is planning on, or might want to write one, let me know before you go if you're going to want it posted while you're gone.  I know most people will be busy and may not be able to keep a scheduled time to write so I just want to know if I should plan on waiting for a certain time to see if there's an article for me to post from Worldcon.

I guess we should establish a policy on obituaries on the front page.

personally, I'm against them. I think there are very few that will be recognized as significant enough by a majority of our readership. And I think most of those will be RPG/tabletop designers. which would be .... like four. Two of which are highly debateable. Maybe one or two movie makers.
Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love
Post by: Skar on August 09, 2006, 11:18:44 AM
About all I can say about our readership is that I suspect most of them play games of one sort or another and that most of them read books of one sort or another.

If you have a source of information that tells you more, allowing you to draw conclusions like

"I think there are very few that will be recognized as significant enough by a majority of our readership. And I think most of those will be RPG/tabletop designers. which would be .... like four. Two of which are highly debateable. Maybe one or two movie makers."

I would like access to it as well, please.

In this case, David Gemmell was huge in the world of fantasy novels.  His work seems to fit our readership as well as anything and even if our readership never heard of him, I think alot of them would enjoy his work if they looked him up because we posted his obit.  And, in the end, isn't that the point of the site?  To guide our readership to things they would enjoy reading/doing/playing?
Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on August 09, 2006, 11:47:15 AM
thanks for the contention. and the straw man. but we really didn't need either.

I never claimed any special knowledge.

However, I was making inferences based on the observed tastes of our readership, both in the forum and in terms of the content we get.

I'm not denegrating Gemmel's work. But frankly, I'm a fairly intelligent and educated man -- I've never read him and I dont' think he's influenced much of the culture represented by the people we have here. Not like George Lucas or even Kevin Siembieda has (like him or not, he's pretty omnipresent).

So, no, I don't think a front page blurb is appropriate. A forum thread, certainly, but not the front page.
Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love
Post by: Skar on August 09, 2006, 12:36:04 PM
Why does an obit we post on our front page need to be only about people you/I/anybody think our readers will think is significant or who have already had a "significant influence" on them?  As I said before
Quote

It certainly doesn't need to be "the article for the day" It doesn't even need to front an article, although it could link to the one EUOL linked to.  All it would need to do is take the opportunity of a significant event concerning the man, (his death is pretty significant) to alert our readership to a potential source of time-wasting enjoyment, ie his novels.

Were I a mere reader I would definitely be appreciative of a site like this alerting me to a body of work I might enjoy.

Further, I think that people who like this site might also like Gemmell's work.  And in thinking so I am "making inferences based on the observed tastes of our readership, both in the forum and in terms of the content we get."  and I am also "a fairly intelligent and educated man" and I have read his work.

I'm not trying to be contentious (and I don't understand what you saw as a straw man in my previous post) I just think it fulfills the mission of the site to post such news on the front page for the reasons I stated above.

I grant that you may have good  reasons for not wanting to do it but I think your presently stated reasons for not wanting to do it are invalid or inapplicable for the reasons I stated above.

inferring that I claim a special body of knowledge unavailable seemed pretty much like an attempt to undermine any authority or authenticity I could claim in my post. to me, using a straw man like that indicates at least disrespect, if not contention.

anyway, I still maintain the reasons I have as valid. I dont' think the front page is the forum for news items like that except in a very exceptional case. As so few of our people are currently influenced by Gemmel, I don't find this to be an exceptional case. I believe that the sort of people who would read an obit on our front page and actually take note of it would be the same sort of people who would find the same info in the forum, where a more complete discussion can be done.

Thus, I feel the forum is a more appropriate place for such a notice. It will be, imo, at least as effective in notifying people of a possible new interest, and won't alter the normal pattern of our front page.

It comes down to opinion, and it is my opinion that obits shouldn't be posted on the front page.

My apologies, I meant no disrespect.  To me it sounded like you had some idea what our readership's interests were beyond what we both had access too (the forums).  The fact that we get thousands of unique visitors to the front page and have, maybe, twenty people in the world who visit the forums implies to me that there may be a significant difference in the interests of the two groups.

I do find Gemmell to be an exceptional case.

The fact that so few of our peope are currently influenced by Gemmell is a reason, in my book, to say something about him.  They might like him.

I think that there are plenty of people who check the front page occasionally who never enter the forums.  There are lots of sites I visit like that and I know people personally who visit our site like that.  And maybe if the news item linked to the forum, someone would jump in and make a comment who might not otherwise have done so.

And how would it alter the normal pattern of our front page?  We're so short on content and time that it doesn't really follow a pattern at all.  Maybe we could make up some of the content shortfall if we started posting the occasional news item like this?  I seriously doubt we'd lose any readership if we did.  Maybe we'd gain some.

IMO, Gemmel doesn't deserve a front page obituary notice.

The forum thread is sufficient.

If someone would like to write a review of one of his books, that would be front page worthy.

I think Skar brought up some good points yet I have to throw my lot in with the others because if we start posting obits on the front page then that might lead to other news items. After that, it would just get tough to have enough room for the articles to stand out and we'd be more of a news site than a discussion site, imo.

I don't know about a nerdery but there will be an article on Gemmell today.  Personal essay type ala geek girl only by me.

I just submitted another book review--a Middle Grade fantasy that's very similar to Harry Potter. I'm on a role!  ;)

It's the same style as the old book reviews and needs html. Use it whenever you like.

Yeah, I did it again. forgot to post yesterday. Both Nerdery *and* Gemmel went up today to make up for it.

Assuming I get a geek girl (come on Ms Fish, I *know* you can do it!) We have next week almost full already.

In other news, I'm toying with the idea of a "coming soon" blurb stickied on the page. I'm not sure I like the idea, but it keeps coming to mind. What do you all think?
Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love

I think that the personal essay on Gemmel was a really good compromise on the obit issue--we get more content, and we get it in context. This can be our policy for now regarding news items: we probably won't post them unless someone writes an accompanying article.

Also: good essay, Skar.

Feedback: You're talking about having this on the home page, right? I'm not sure what purpose this would have. To entice readers to come back to the home page? We forum dwellers don't really need it, but if you think it would increase traffic, then I say go for it. A trial run certainly wouldn't hurt, if it's not too hard to do.

Also: I have more time to do book reviews now. I enjoy doing it and I read enough that I could easily do one a week or every other week. I don't know what you're needs are--you may not want to get too many reviews in one area (i.e. books). I could also do webcomic or graphic novel reviews. There is the fact that most if not all of my reviews will be of children's/YA lit, most often fantasy, because that's what I read--and maybe that differentiates my reviews enough, I don't know. Anyway, post on here to let me know what you'd like.

our primary content has historically been reviews. This was because of our origins. In our current position, however, we are ecstatic to get original content in the form of new games, settings, editorials, team builds, ideas, creatures, whatever.

And I just submitted a book review. A few days late, but better late than never! This one doesn't follow the format. It would've taken me longer and I figured it was better to get it done. It's a review, nonetheless, and of a dang good book, too.

P.S. I put in the tags for italics, since those didn't carry over from copy/paste from the Word document. I used the format we use on the forums--I'm not sure if that is the correct html for a submission. Anyway, heads up.

I've submitted another review. This time for His Majesty's Dragon. Thanks to Sigyn for recommending it. I liked it. I'll probably have reviews for the 2nd and 3rd in the series in the next month or so. They're waiting on my nightstand, rather impatiently, to be read.

Wow. I've never had a request. It makes me feel...almost special.  ;)

I'll be happy to, but it's going to have to wait. I'm in California and can't get library books--plus it leads to unwanted battles when I spend too much time reading while home visiting my parents.

As for YOU writing the review, I think that's a great idea! Keep trying! If you beat me to it, I won't mind (there are plenty of books out there to review). I was scared at first to write a review, too--I just had to break down and do it. Now, I think it's fun.

Done.

Edit:  I find it ironic that the forum frontpage can be allowed to run completely bloody dry without a murmur by the same people who fling hissy fits if I suggest that a review of a newly released movie ought to run close to its release.

So...no posts is somehow better than a double post?  Strange.
Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love

it's better when the editor who usually posts is trying to get used to working a second job that keeps him out till midnight or later 4 times a week and has a hard time getting his head together for anythign more than he has to do at either job.

It'll improve when I get into my groove

and the issue with double posting was never an issue with "too much" being on the front page but a factor of having stuff to post.

If not, I'd be happy to, because I'm definitely seeing it. Though, the review wouldn't be until after the normal release date--I won't be going to any early showings.

I will be posting articles this week, actually. I spoke with Fell about this.

TWG is going to a three times a week schedule - MWF. I've dropped all columns because we've only had one column from each of 2 of our supposed 3 in the last 4 months. Columns are dead. Long live... something else.

Dibs for reviewing the movie Happy Feet (I don't suspect anyone else here has seen it anyway) because I want to steer others from it.

Also, I know I have two book reviews waiting to be posted. I want to make sure that with this move that they didn't get deleted or overlooked (I can re-submit if necessary). I sumitted one on November 1 and it still hasn't been posted, so I was just wondering...

Heh, no worries nessa, we only touched the forum this time the only changes made to the front site was to change the forum link and to make the log-in work with the new forum.

As you've noticed we've had some real rough spots in getting things posted, everyone in charge of that have been extremely busy.  I don't really expect much to get done this week either with the holiday.  Bear with us just a little longer, I'm probably going to go through the main site after Turkey day week and code in some features to make updating easier on everyone and I know how annoying it is to write a review and then have it sit for a week or two before getting posted.  Fell is worried that the main site is dying off and we've been discussing ways to prevent that (awards are part of our plan) but we do realize that we can encourage article submissions all we want but if we don't do our part there's no point to it.

yay for not specifically blaming me even though it's my fault!

I should get an award if I go for 3 weeks without missing an article :D

anyway, last week... I've got no excuse. Articles today and wednesday, but probably not Friday as I will be kicking the holiday season into gear with my family and it's a day off anyway due to Thursday's holiday.

However, folks, it'd be *really* nice to get some articles on something other than books and movies. Seriously. Can any of the rest of you get off your butts and write something?

There's a review of "Casino Royale" sitting in the movie queue, waiting to be blurbed.

There are some minor formatting problems with it, that I would normally fix but can't for some reason.  I get the error "You do not administrative rights to do this." when I hit the "edit" link.

And it would be really nice for those of us who write book/movie reviews that they actually got posted. So, you know, we'd be motivated to keep writing them.

On a similar but unrelated note, this means that all links for all previous articles to the forum no longer work right. When you come across such a link, let me know what article it's in and I'll fix it. I'm not going to go through and change them unless I know someone's trying to use it.

Hmmm, so I've finally bought issuse's 2, 3, and 4 of Batman and the Mad Monk. SE, you suppose I should continue reviewing these one issue at a time, or just wait until the series is finished and write a concluding review?

Also, the Union Jack mini-series has one more issue to go, then I'll pick it up and write a review of it. I've enjoyed this one a lot so that one will be coming down the interwebtubes soon after it's released.

how about you write them one at a time and I'll combine them into one review if that becomes necessary. In general, the issues of one story arc like this have about the same strengths and weaknesses, making individual reviews unnecessary.

Humm...I'm a little hesitant on posting a review of something a forum member wrote by a friend of said forum member.  You are in his writing group are you not?  That would be like anyone of us writing a review of Mistborn or Elantris, but it's Fell's call.

Whatever.  Parker asked me to write the review.  I wrote the review.  I think it's mostly a publicity thing.  If you don't want to post it, fine, but I'm so tired and stressed right now that I don't want to know about it.  Just delete it and don't tell me.

Cityscape is in, I sat on the review for a month because I was taugt that if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all.  I can't help but feel Fell's trying to tell me something by giving me the really bad RPG books to review (I also had to suffer through Power of Faerun last year) but my next entry is Faiths of Eberron and that can't be anyware near as bad as this was.

There's a submit an article link on the front page of the site.  You're welcome to review anything we don't have up, if you want to review something we've already got a review for then it needs to be a significantly different point of view.  Also read the submission guidelines http://www.timewastersguide.com/view.php?id=530 and if you have any questions feel free to ask Nessa, SE or I and we'll help you out.

I can't remember what the status of needing reviews and things is.  I know we've been very heavy on book reviews lately, but I've been writing what amount to book reviews for my adolescent lit class, and several of the books are speculative, so I could easily tweak them and submit them if you're looking for book reviews.  Do we want them?

I've been trying to limit book reviews to once a week (last week there were two because one was a fantasy, but the other a comic) so that it doesn't seem like so many and so they're spaced out. So submit as many as you want and they'll be posted, the order depending on what else is in the queue.

I have a perfect book for MsFish to review for Geek Girl if she's up for it. Otherwise, is there a girl who might be interested in reviewing an advance copy of Confessions of a Part-Time Sorceress: A Girl's Guide to D&D?

But like I said, I think this would be a perfect book for MsFish. I mean, how could she resist a book that starts out with a list like:

Quote
Top 10 Myths about D&D

1. You need to speak with a British accent when playing
2. You have to play in a dark, dank basement in the home of someone's mother
...
6. It will take the rest of your natural life to learn the rules
7. If you start playing D&D, your friends will abandon you and your subscription to match.com will mysteriously be deactivated
...
9. You will start dressing like a musical theater major and insist on wearing leotards, capes, or turtlenecks

...and so forth. Lots of fun. Who shall I mail it to?

(Note: this book is aimed at girls like I was at one point--who have friends who might play, but don't play themselves, or who might have played a few times, or don't consider themselves the "gamer type." So if you don't game, you'll still find it a fun read.)

Stacer, since this is an advanced copy and something we'd be reviewing/talking about what's the time frame you have in mind or needed for this?  I'd hate to have you send us this and then not get to it for 4-5 months or put it out next month but then the book no come out for 6 months, that type of thing.
Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love

It's being published in September, so a review anytime between now and then is fine. No rush, but also no worries if it comes out sooner, either. You'd just want to be sure to note when it'll be available in bookstores whenever the review runs. (That info is on the back of the ARC.)

Made a quick change to your "Meet THe Robinsons" review -- the donald duck short was orginally created in 3d in the 50s and was remastered to this new technology.

Also, for anyone reading this, if there was the option between no HTML in your articles when you subit or HTML generated by MS Word I'd would prefer no HTML.  MS Word generates really funky HTML and it takes me quite a while to clean things up.

Why this is good: Now I can write a script to auto update your total article count when something is approved instead of having to run a script that requires me to shift through the database and change everyone's names back to their forum log-in name.  so Nessa hasn't been getting credit for her book reviews because Nessa isn't her forum login name.

I'm also going to make the author name a link, if there's a forum account associated with it, and allow for people to click on that link to view all articles by that author.

This doesn't resolve any issues with multiple people being able to be listed as authors and getting credit.

So I don't have anything to post. I just started a bunch of books, but won't be finishing any I can write a review on until next week.

Does anyone have ANYTHING? The queue is empty. Book review? Movie review? Anything?

I've got RPG stuff I'm reading but not going to be done for today.  I might have something for Wensday but my original target was Friday.

I've populated enough RPG books out to people to cover us for one RPG review a week for at least 2 months and we got another shipment from Wizards that should cover a month (if we can whip a few of our reviewers into shape so they'll review what they have), if we can count on one Book review a week that will leave us with just one other day to fill.

Ok, so due to lack of being able to sleep right now (when I want to), I sat down and started writing. Then I decided to stop that and grab some comic books I've been meaning to review and have started work on those. I just finished my review of JLA v1 "New World Order." It's been submitted. Now onto Batman and the Monster Men.

EDIT: Batman and the Monster Men submitted!

Ok, I have a request/question to ask. Would it be possible to have, when my comic reviews are posted, to have them blurbed as:

"The Arbiter reviews: <comic name>! His judgment has been passed!"

Or something like that. You know?

Well, there's no one else around here who reviews comics, and I figured that'd be a nice way to make them pop out a little more for the scavenging reader.

Also, I'd be more than happy to take any requests for reviewing certain comics, as long as I'm given time to hunt it down and rustle up the money to purchase it.

I've got something y'all might be interested in. As an assignment for my Book Publicity class @ Emerson, I'm interviewing an author about her experiences in promoting her book. Stacy hooked me up with Tiffany Trent.

I know Jeffe and SE recently posted a podcast interview with Stacy and Tiffany. But this one will be focusing on the publicity more than the book. So I think the content will be significantly different. Shouldn't be too long. Maybe 15 minutes or so, depending on how chatty it turns out to be. I thought maybe I could submit it as another podcast interview. Yes?

There should be a way to get what you recorded off the ipod via itunes, when you do let me know the file size and I'll PM you with a temp FTP account that you can use to upload it and then SE/Jeffe (I think they're really the same person) can download it.

Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love

Well Shrain, we should start with what you have to record with.

Is it an Ipod w/ a set of speakers or a Digital audio recorder, or something else?

The big thing is to record it in an MP3 format with some sort of program... I like Audacity its free, powerful and fairly easy to use, but you could try something else.

We have FTP access through "E" so thats not a prob.

Ideally you should shoot for a 30 minute interview.

Id build in a little lead time to get set up, chitchat and relax. If you get phlegmy bring a little water. Also try and write down a few questions on note cards before. Dont script! It'll sound like your reading.

But Im getting ahead of myself...

what equipment are you working with?

Hey, Jeffe,
I think I answered all your questions in our IM convo today. I even managed to convert it to MP3 and save it on my desktop.

So now I just need info about the FTP account. So I'll send Jeffe and SE a PM. The file size is 37.2 MB. Thanks!

Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love

Do whatever you want as long at it fits with what the site normally covers, then goto "Submit and Article" on the front page and paste.

It's not recomended that you write the article in the submit page because the CAPTCHA could cause you to loose what you entered if you type that in wrong.

Title: Re: Call for Articles: Give us your love
Post by: Nessa on April 29, 2008, 07:37:39 PM
We will take pretty much any reviews: manga, movies, books, RPGs, etc. If you're doing a book you might check to see if we've already reviewed it. It does not have to be a recently published book. We don't usually review books by authors in our forums.

If I, Nessa, am not partial to your review I won't post it. If you want to know why i won't post it, then you can PM me about it. Otherwise, be patient because I only post 2-3 a week.

We also take non-reviews (columns), in which you can discuss anything you want.

Fastor, if you submit, I will usually edit it before it's posted and if I have questions or need you to change things, then I will contact you. Make sure to include the email you want to communicate with.

If you are writing an article/review, be sure to read what we've posted in the past so you can get an idea of the format and style of what we will post.

If I don't like it I won't post it. That means bad writing or profanity. That kind of stuff makes me grumpy.

If I like it, but it needs work, I'll email you and give comments so you can resubmit it.

You can always PM me if you submit something to make sure I see it. I don't always look at the queue lately since there's been so little activity. And, well, I'm a little burned out myself on writing book reviews lately, so haven't done anything for a while.
