Title: For Sale
Post by: House of Mustard on April 25, 2005, 12:08:52 PM
Well, I hopped on Amazon and bought the book.  If I don't like it, I expect a full refund -- which I will take out of your hide.

Man... Amazon sucks.  I just got my confirmation email, and I won't get the book for almost two weeks.

that would be UPS. Amazon told me that I could have it tomorrow if I wanted to pay overnight.

Yes, TOMORROW. Not a theoretical overnight, but if I ordered by like, 6:30 my time, I'd have it on Tuesday April 26.

Amazon's usually pretty good. They give you long projections, but if you order through them, not through the "marketplace" they bust their humps to get it out much faster.

It just seems a little misleading -- when I chose shipping options it said standard was 3-5 days, but when I got the confirmation email, it said I wouldn't get the book until May 4th to 6th.  That's way more than 3-5 days.

(Not that it matters -- I don't have any time to read right now.  It just annoys me.)

Yeah, 3-5 business days would usually be later this week. I concur. That's lame.

Well, then, I think I'm the first to have actually bought it and have it in my hot little hands. They had 4 copies at my old B&N, and someone had already bought one by the time I got there. I talked it up to my old coworkers while I was there, and one shortlisted 8 more copies of it (shortlisting means they made sure that they'd order 8 more copies--which means he plans on reading it and recommending it). It's on display in the New Science Fiction and Fantasy section.

I have to go hunting for another book that wasn't at that B&N, so I'll see how many they have at Coolidge Corner when I drop in over there. I might stop by at the independent bookstore down the street on my way home just for fun.

Well, I called two local B&Ns and they both said "uh, that doesn't come out until next month." Grrr...

I may just go Amazon if I decide on something else to get with it to get super saver. Maybe when I get home from work...

By the way, the cover looks *much* better in person than it does on a computer screen. I've always loved the artwork, but the addition of text seemed busy on-screen. But the raised lettering separates the title and author name from the background, so it's much better that way. Plus, it isn't swallowed up in a black background the way it is on Brandon's site. I love the color combinations on the spine, back, and title. Very nice. And the olive binding with the cream endpapers--very nice design. Totally the same as Olive's Ocean by Kevin Henkes, a middle grade novel that nearly won the Newbery last year. You've even got head and footbands, and a much better grade of paper than you normally see with Tor's books. I love the Aons at the beginnings of the chapters, and the part opener pages, and the display text within the book.

All in all, a beautiful book design.  They really did a good job with it.

I was very impressed with the way the book turned out--inside, out, and all around.  Thank you so much everyone for the support!

If you read the book and like it, it sure would be nice to have a few more reviews up on Amazon.com. . . .

Our B&N just got them today and I've got mine on hold.  I'll probably go get it later tonight.  Can't wait to finally read this story.

Edit: Just got it and I agree with stacer, a beautiful design.  I love the little pictures on the top of the inside cover.

The bad news is, our B&N doesn't have it yet; the good news is, you'll be on the shelf next to Salvatore, which I'm sure will be good for business.

Yesterday afternoon around 4, I bought my copy!  Cost a bit more than it would have through Amazon - but hey, it's for a good cause, right?

This book is very pleasing.  I'm only on chapter 14, since I had to go to bed early, but I am completely enthralled with it. So much so that I'll probably give up my computer time today and read instead.

I called B&N to see whether it was in, and the clerk who helped me was on a mobile phone.  She walked through the stacks, looking for the book, and I heard her say, "Sanderson... Sanderson... that should be right after Salvatore...."

I wimped and went Amazon, since I'm buying at least two copies the savings will really help me.
Title: Re: For Sale
Post by: stacer on April 26, 2005, 11:08:34 AM
Funny thing is, all the copies at the Pru B&N were in the new SF/F display, so there wasn't a copy under Sanderson. The other B&N I went to yesterday (in search of a different book) had 3 on a display table and one under Sanderson in the stacks.

The B&N I went to was more like your second one: there were three copies in the New SF/F display, and one on the shelf under Sanderson.  That one copy was the one the clerk pulled to hold for me.  When I noticed the gap on the shelf, I moved a copy from New to fill it.  Y'know, just in case anyone else goes to look for Sanderson.

(If/When I buy more copies, I'll buy through Amazon.  Considerably less expensive than B&N.  Stupid Question: Does the author receive the same royalty either way?  Or would it be better for him if I continued paying full retail at B&N?)
Title: Re: For Sale
Post by: stacer on April 26, 2005, 11:48:03 AM
I think Amazon takes a smaller percentage because they buy in such bulk. But it probably varies.
Title: Re: For Sale
Post by: Peter Ahlstrom on April 26, 2005, 01:15:11 PM
I would THINK the author gets the same amount...though the publisher definitely gets less...unless I'm totally wrong, I always thought royalties were based on the list price on the book...umm...thinking about it, I could be totally wrong...

*shrug*

Anyway...I decided to get mine through Amazon...with some manga for the free shipping. It's good to support your local bookstore, but...*sigh*

In answer to the question:  Yes, I do get the same royalty through Amazon that I get through a B&N sale.  Technically, buying it in the store will probably help me a little more, since that will encourage them to re-order and stock more on the shelves, which in turn helps sell more books.  However, if Amazon is significantly cheaper, then I don't see why you shouldn't buy it there.  (Though, with shipping, and considering B&N's new-hardback discount, I'd think the price might be very similar.)

Either way, I really appreciate this, guys.   I realize it's expensive to buy in hardback, and I certainly don't expect everyone to always buy my books right when they come out.  (Unless, of course, you want nice, shiny hardbacks.  :)  )  However, having early good sales on your first book can mean a lot for an author's career, so you're really helping me along.

8k is the goal.  If we can hit that, then I will be very pleased.

actually, EUOL, I currently plan on buying all your books in hardback. For the time being anyway.

Note: I have every book my friend Pam has published since I met her, everything HoM has published, and everything EUOL has published (well, I don't have EUOL's in my hands yet, it has to get to his house, get signed, and make it back to the post office still). I've got a growing collection of friends' stuff.
Title: Re: For Sale
Post by: stacer on April 26, 2005, 10:31:29 PM
I do that, too. When it's available in hardcover, I buy it in hardcover. Well, come to think of it, EUOL is the first good friend who's had a book published in hardcover (I've met plenty of authors, but it's different with a friend). But that's the plan, hardcover and signed.

Oh... well then, blue leafs! Take them out, underdog! Also I believe the B&N Here only has about 4 books, 3 now. So they may reorder some more.

went to the downtown Arlington store today.

They had four copies. Sounds like all of 'em bought four. I snuck two of them onto the "new SF" rack at eye level (Moved a Bujold book, only one copy left, down a shelf where there was lots of space to hold one) and bought one.

Apparently, most bookstores and publishers don't stick to hard-fast release dates.  If a book is coming out in May, they ship it late April, and the bookstores are free to put it out whenever they feel like it.  This is apparently a frequent enough occurrence that my agent anticipated (though didn't expect) it.

With manga, the street date is usually a release-by date, and things can show up up to 3 weeks early.
Title: Re: For Sale
Post by: stacer on April 27, 2005, 09:44:09 PM
I can't speak for any other bookstores, but the general practice with Barnes and Noble is that unless they have a specific "release-on" date (and this only happens with *really* big books, like Harry Potter), they put them on the shelf when they get them.
Title: Re: For Sale
Post by: Oldie Black Witch on April 28, 2005, 01:12:19 AM
Borders (the one at Riverwoods) has a May 1st release date. They have three copies but are refusing to put them out yet. They were kind enough to call B&N and ask if they had any copies left. They claim to still have one.

Waldenbooks in the Provo Towne Center never ordered any. The punks.

So I'll be waiting until next week to buy it.

Title: Re: For Sale

Just call some bookstores in your area and see if they have it. Some places are getting it on the shelves a little later than others.

Sold out at Tor doesn't mean bookstores have sold out all copies; it just means they can't really get any more from Tor when they do.

Amazon rank dropped to #8,700   :-[

My bishop's wife is considering buying a copy for her 12-year-old son, who devours fantasy. But she's afraid it might be too high for him, reading level wise (she was holding the book at the time, so she would be a better judge of that than I). He's not a very advanced reader. But she said she'd look at it and see if it's something he might like or at least grow into. So if nothing else, you may have a reader in a couple of years.

Mine arrived!!

It is indeed a beautiful book. BUT it looks to me like the slipcover layout is a little off. The spine part isn't centered on the spine, and when I tried to center it by refolding the flaps, the cover image is not wide enough to accommodate.

I must admit I jumped to the climactic part at the end to see if anything about the part involving the stick had changed, and was a little surprised that it hadn't.

well you have a few options Entropy, one is you could buy it via Amazon.com (usa) and have them ship it to EUOL's address then throw about shipping costs into my paypal account or you could place the full book price and shipping into my Paypal account.

I'm not sure how much the book costs, and there might be book rates for international mail, but standard costs are listed here for a 2 pound object.

So, I was already late for something, but the post office was going to close in ten minutes, so we drove as fast as we could -- I even ran a red light (but it was only barely red) -- and annoyed my wife with the crazy driving.

And I got to the post office with one minute to spare, and got inside, and, for some idiot reason, the phone company had mailed me a phone book.

So, still waiting...

Sounds like fodder for your new book.

Moshe nixed him. So yeah...a lot of details at the end have changed (and all other mentions of the brother are gone), but it's still the same overall.

lol.

First, SE:  Book is on the way.  (Though, I'm not sure how often I'll do this.  I'm willing to send off copies like this for people I don't see often and who are good friends, but even sending it media mail cost me more than I made off the royalty.  This would be a quick way to lose money.  See:  http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript?SK=135)

HoM:  25exp for a clever, but ultimately futile, attempt at saving the party.

Tekiel:  Eton (the Mad Prince) will make an appearance in the extended DVD edition of ELANTRIS.  (Or, well, he'll show up on my site in the 'deleted scenes' section of the ELANTRIS goodies page.)

You are annoying.  I still haven't saw it anywhere.  I hate how everyone always talks about having this book or that book like a month before it actually comes out.  Then I go look for it and don't find it.  I think I will special order a copy next time.

Just for kicks, I finally bought the book--in California. Now the Aliso Viejo Borders only has one copy left. Mwuhahaha. Or something.

EUOL, I sent SPrig some bucks for you -- it didn't feel right to make you pay for my postage. Keep the change, or let him buy fries with the change. Whichever. (Hopefully there will be change).

Oh Entropy you need to e-mail me your address if you want your book  back.

Just send it to the TWG account in my profile.

My mom said she would buy it...but she'll probably just use Amazon as well. Just not having to walk from the car to the bookstore front door is reason enough for her...

Media Play finally got some copies after I went in and asked about it a bunch of times.  So that is how I finally got it (I hate ordering stuff on the internet).  But the B&N just across the street never had it in stock, even after Media Play finally got it.  Oh yeah, and Vampire Hunter D was supposed to come out May 4th, but both of those stores have it listed as june 10th and won't get any copies until then... the website still says may 4th though, man I hate trying to buy books when they first come out.

Yeah, it didn't even show up on their computers until I was complaining about never finding the book I want.  Then a couple days later they suddenly had 8 copies.

Eric,

I think I forgot to number your copy.  However, I skipped a number for you, so I can put it in later.  Did I already tell you this?

Peter and Stacy--I pulled books aside for you so we can swap when you see me.

he's numbering upto fifty and I'm pretty sure he hasn't gotten past 20 yet (he wasn't even in the dubble digits until last weekend or early this week), I'll make sure I get a number tomorrow so those that haven't yet had a chance to get a book numbered yet will know where they stand.  remember though that he'll still sign books after the first 50 but he won't be numbering them.

Izzy,

For old time's sake, I pulled you aside #43.  I have no idea when you'll get it, though....

Not many numbers left.  Tage is waiting for 50, and Skar will probably get #44 tonight.  That leaves five more--and I don't think Sprig has had his copy signed yet.

I think Mustard wants a numbered one, if you haven't already assigned him a number.
