I'm still kicking myself for being out of the country for The Pixies reunion tour.  Man, I dig their stuff.

Frank Black's (Black Francis) early solo stuff is solid gold too.  It starts to get bad right around "Cult of Ray."  I still need to check out his stuff with The Catholics.

Billy Currie - Transportation

I  bought this instrumental CD at a pawn shop entirely on the basis that Steve Howe is mentioned as a supporting musician on the front cover. Steve Howe is a very talented individual (this is actually also the reason I bought Polar Shift - a new age benefit CD for Antarctica). It turned out be pretty cool. I was pleased.

And come on people, we really don't care what song you're listening to right now. We care about WHY you're listening to that song. Why did you buy it? Why did you keep it on the station when the radio started to play it? Why were you in the mood to put it in the stereo?

Nine Inch Nails "Only" from 'WITH TEETH'

Why I'm listening to this song is because I like the angst in the words, and of course the music.  I like how catchy the lyrics always are, in example:
There's a tiny little dot that caught my eye and it turned out to be a scab, and I just had this funny feeling like I just knew it must be something bad . . . . . I couldn't leave it alone, I just kept pickin at that scab.

I bought it because Nine Inch Nails is one of my favorites, they rule and always will!  I kept it spinning in my car for the first week I owned it non-stop.  Why I am in the mood for NIN?  As always, to smash it apart just for the XXXX of it!

Jam asked for an 80s song the other day, and I brought it to work so I could have him listen. That started some nostalgia, so I am listening to:

Aha - Take On Me
Culture Club - Karma Chameleon
Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy
The Go-Gos - We Got the Beat
Men Without Hats - Safety Dance
Naked Eyes - Always There to Remind Me
Sly Fox - Let's Go All the Way
Taco - Puttin' on the Ritz
The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star

Oh yeah. I have so many memories of these songs I don't even know where to begin. Videos, dances, radio by the pool in summer....

I'm listening to Muse (a compilation cd, and I'm not sure of the names of the albums, though one of the songs is called Stockholm Syndrome) because it is absolutely wonderful and not so hard that my baby cries when I play it in the car. I'm told that the three guys in this band all went to school at Juliard (sp?) together, and instead of going into classical music, decided to form a rock band.  There's a great song where at the end they start playing Rachmaninoff, and another where they pay homage to Philip Glass.

I'm listening to disc three of the special deluxe edition of The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society.

Because it is full of yummy Kinks goodness. And I love the Kinks. And this is the Kinks-est of the Kinks album. It is definitely NOT for the average viewer.

Disc three has many rarities unavailable anywhere else any more, like the fun instrumental "Mick Avory's Underpants." *giggle*

I'm listening to The Bouquet. They never recorded anything but a demo tape, but I have a copy of that. They were cool, with Carolee's vocals being unique.. feminine without being girly. Pained but not self-pitying. Definitely an emo precursor though.

Right now I'm listening to Mando Diaos Hurricane Bar, because it happens to be my most recent music purchase. They're part of the 60s Pop/Garage Rock revival movement, and I find that I like them a lot more than The Hives or the White Stripes or anyone else who is part of the movement. Still, nobody beats the Exploding Hearts when it comes to Garage Rock revival.

Driving in the desert I heard a song that made me laugh. It's a punk song--the singing and style of music--but the lyrics sound like it should be a country song, and one refrain of it is done country style. I thought it was a cool mix of music genres. I googled it and the song is called "Ohio (Come Back to Texas)" by Bowling for Soup. Worth checking out.

Quote
[08:19] e: dude, saying country and blues are the same is as retarded as saying that Pink Floyd is a blues band
[08:19] JP: Pink Floyd *IS* a Blues band

I suppose to keep my reputation, I have to point out how idiotic this response is. There is, at best, one album (Dark Side of the Moon) that is ARGUABLY a blues album, because it uses a lot of blues driven imagery and musical structure. Everything before and since has been much more psychedelia driven. The Wall comes closest to being another exception, but two albums in a 40 year career does not a blues band make, even were I generous enough to grant those two being actual blues album (and frankly, they're not).

The point is, ONE band that is cross-genre blues/country does not mean that all of country music is blues. It's not. The thematic material is substantially different. The rhythms are related but don't qualify as the same. The sources of inspiration and motivations diverge greatly. There isn't any reason to rationally say that country is blues and mean it.

Dark Side of the Moon is the only Pink Floyd I've ever heard, because I asked someone what the best album was, they said that so I picked it up. I therefore assumed it would, y'know, be representative of the group as a whole.

I know this will probably sound gay, but I think that 98 degrees has some really good holiday music. They may be passe, but their harmonies on the more serious songs, like Silent Night, O Holy Night, Away in a Manger etc., is really good. I was very excited to discover this a couple of years ago. I recommend it. If you're not sure, you can always download some of it and if you like it, buy it.

An entire album of Coldplay drives me nuts.

I burned out on Christmas music about a week ago. I spent the better part of that week listening to Neil Finn (solo and with Crowded House) and Bruce Springsteen. Yeah, it even mystifies me.

I'm back into my nearly 7000 song mix though, so while "Low Budget" by the Kinks (live in 1930) is playing right now, by the time you read this, it could be a completely different genre.

e, you ever heard James Blunt's "Out of My Mind" tune? I started laughing the other day because of the lyrics involving a monkey. haha. Made me think of you. ;)
Part of it goes:
"Judging by the look on the organ grinder,
He'll judge me by the fact that my face don't fit.
It's touching that the monkey sits on my shoulder.
He's waiting for the day when he gets me, . . ."

I don't think I have, though I do believe someone has recommended it to me. I'll have to check it out

Right now I've got 80s pop divas on the mind. Debbie Gibson and Belinda Carlisle. Yeah, I don't know what's wrong with me. I'm trying to purge it with a dose of P. Diddy and The Notorious B.I.G. It's all about the Benjamins, Baby!

Great Big Sea, "Excursion around the Bay."
I first got into these guys when I was looking for music to uh... steal...

Anyway, a friend I hadn't talked to in a long time recommended them. I downloaded. I liked. It's like Canadian Irish folk-pop.

I'm also listening to Strawberry Switchblade. Never has a girly named band try to sound so tough and failed so badly. There's a lot "Strawberry" in their music, but very very little "switchblade"

I just grabbed Rush from my dad's changer, and have been listening to it for the last few days. It is kind of funny, because back when I first listened to Rush, I wasn't really a fan. (Keep in mind that I was very young) I told my brother that I didn't like Rush very much, and he spent several weeks on and off trying to convince me that I liked Rush. I suppose it must have worked, because here, years later, I like what I hear.

Bob... Bob... Bob... ! Dylan! Holy Frihoulay! I got the "No Direction Home" soundtrack back when it came out, after having heard "Tangled Up In Blue" in my Hum300 class last semester and having learned a bit about Dylan in my Beat Generation class as well. MmmmMMmmM!

I now also own 4 other cds of his. So much goodlyness.

I as well have bought two harmonicas of my own which I play with a frightful vigor. These are instruments of much fun and amusement. This is what life is about. I'll stop before I start tirading.

Liking Rush takes (like Jazz) both a certain musical maturity and a specific musical aesthetic. Having one, without the other is usually not enough (though Rush is a little more accessible than a lot of Jazz). "Xanadu," for example, is probably the pinnacle of complex drumming in a non-solo. Peart manages to weave three simultaneous rhythms/beats seemlessly with the rest of the song. Usually, when an instrument is used with such virtuosity, it stands out and diminishes the rest of the song.

Anyway, Rush is awesome, but I was kind of blah about them at first as well. It wasn't until I started getting all hoity-toity holier-than-thou with my music tastes that I started to try to understand them. Now that I'm (largely) over that sense of superiority, I still find them amazing, but I don't have to jam then down everyone else's throat.

I picked up Johnny Cash's "The Legend of Johnny Cash" this week. It really is awesome folk music with other crazy spiffy electric guitar riffs and Cash's soothing rthymic voice.

Although there's no harmonica's being blown in the album, it's still an excellent listen.

Yeah that is a good album, nice mix of his catalog.   The song highwayman, I really liked that and then Dr. Jeffe showed me a link to the band the Highwaymen.  Now I own most of their stuff.  If you can find it cheap, like 5$ or so then I would start out with their superhits album.  It also has Big River which is on your album which is more like the type of songs they sing.  I think you will like them!  The Highwaymen are the singers Cash, Jennings, Nelson, Kristoffe.  Its like country's version of the Rat Pack. 8)

Here is a list of my favorite bands

Elvis, I listen to him at least 1/2 the time I am listening to music.  He is the man, nobody comes close.  If you get only one Elvis CD, then I would recommend Elvis 30 #1s, if you get two then also Elvis 2nd to None.  You will then know how awesome he really is and want all of his stuff.

The Beatles, their #1s is also good
Led Zeppelin
Frank Sinatra
Bing Crosby

Dino (aka Dean Martin), who I am listening to now.  If you don't have any Dino yet, then pick up Dino: The Essential Dean Martin which will be 10-15$ for 30 songs.  Good deal!

Johnny Cash

The Psychedelic Furs are possibly the most underrated band of the 80s. Thoughtful lyrics with clever word use, but without jamming anything down your throat. Mellow but not boring music, and sometimes the beat even rocks.

I recently grabbed about every song ever recorded by a few artists: Eric Clapton, Queen, Van Morrison, Jimmy Buffett, and the Police. Plus an album by the Puppini Sisters, one by Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris, and The Grateful Dead. My current playlist is all these songs shuffled together. I had forgotten many of the joys of The Police especially. Personally, I much prefer it to Sting's solo work. I always bagged on Andy Summers, but I think he added something to the mix that was very interesting.

The new album by Knopfler and Harris is called "All the Roadrunning," and it's a sort of folk rock album. Very interesting stuff. Knopfler done some interesting stuff since the Dire Straits days.

The Puppini sisters I grabbed mostly out of curiosity. They were performing old timey stuff like "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and "Mr. Sandman." The cover of Blondie's "Heart of Glass" was interesting -- the concept of retro-dating a song, rather than updating it for modern sensibilities is always fascinating -- but not strong enough to stand on it's own. However, their cover of The Smith's "Panic" (on the streets of London, Panic on the streets of Birmingham.... Hang the DJ) was awesome. I'm not prepared to recommend this album to anyone who is vaguely interested.

"We Used to Be Friends" by The Dandy Warhols--the theme song for Veronica Mars the TV Show.

I love this song. The way it's cut on the show is awesome, but the whole song is cool too. I broke down and bought the entire CD from iTunes because I really wanted the song, and it was only available on the album. I am quite satisfied with my purchase--it has a nice mix of music and moods.

Another person on the album that has impressed me is Ivy. I particularly like her song "Edge of the Ocean," which I had to buy separately. She seems to me to be a kind of mix of Enya, Avril Lavigne, and Norah Jones rolled into one. I could be totally off though. ;)

I have not been able to actively listen to much of anything right now. I think I might have blown something with that overload of Queen. I mean, seriously, 3-4 solid days of nothing BUT Queen. Anytime I'd turn on some music, it was Queen. Freaking Freddie Mercury man. He was something.

But what can I do to get back into listening to music at any moment I desire? Instead of when I feel like I should?

You need to respond in a manner that's feasible for gemm.

What you do is get a time machine that will allow you to go back in time and warn yourself when ever a Queen song is about to come on, then you and your past selves will just keep going back in time and having zany adventures until you realise that you, yes, you are Freddy Mercury and you're just sick of hearing yourself so you go forward in time to prevent yourself from ever buying a time machine.

Lately I've really been digging Josh Groban and Michael Buble. I really like that Buble is bringing back the style of Sonatra and the like. And Josh Groban's voice is just amazing. He does a lot of inspirational stuff that I really like (You Raise Me Up and Don't Give Up, You Are Loved).

For examples:

Ultra Blue by Utada Hikaru. (Yes, I've finally fallen into listening to J Pop.) This album has several fantabulous songs and is well worth the extra cost to get it imported.
Title: Re: What are you Listening to?

Eh, Ultra Blue is OK.  It's better then her first album (which I think sold 1 million copies in just a week, it out sold the Beetles in Japan), but I was expecting--or hoping for--something more along the lines of her KH2 song.

If you want a good group get Asian Kung-Fun Generation which is one of the few good J-Rock groups and of course the greatist J-Rock group, the B'z (who are hard to find on e-bay on the like so I don't have as many of their CDs as I'd like).

Another one you need to get is Chara's CD Junior Sweets, one of the best J-Pop albums ever made, doesn't even really sound like J-Pop.

Judy and Marry are also good (pop life) but they broke up years ago so they may be hard to find.

Well, her KHII song is on the album. :P

Thanks for the recommendations!  Let's see. I have ”リライト” (obviously) by Asian Kung-fu Generation, and I like it enough to look into them a bit further. I'll only look into Chara if you can promise me she's not bubble-gum J-Pop.

I'm kinda avoiding Abingdon Boys School (simply because I don't like Nishikawa's vocal style) and L'Arc~en~Ciel, but they're hard to avoid since they're *everywhere.* Other than that, any recs are appreciated.
Title: Re: What are you Listening to?
Post by: Spriggan on June 17, 2007, 10:29:20 PM
ya, but the rest of the songs aren't in the same style as that (they're more bubblegum).

For Asian Kung-Fu Generation I recommend Houkai Amplifier (it's got the naruto song on it they do) but it's a shorter album.  Rewrite is on Sol-Fa.

Chara's not bubblegum, when I was there they called her the Japanese Alantis morriset, which is about as accurate as calling me the white Michael Jordan, because of the theme of the album.  But she's part of what I guess you could call the "Girl Power" movement over there with Misha and a few others, kind of a "we actually have talent and can sing" group that stand out because they're not generic J-pop.

L'Arc is really hit or miss for me, they keep wavering back and forth from Bubblegum to actually good music (ie rock) and they'll have one or two songs that are along those lines and then a bunch that are almost there but they then they chicken out and go back to the sap that's not very good.  Ray is a good "Best of Album" they release in '99, smile which is the one everyone knows the from (FMA song is on that one, and you can actually buy a localized version at FYE) is ok but it follows the above trend I mentioned above.

Never heard Adingdon Boys School, though I really don't follow the Japanese music charts much at all, considering how hard it is to get over here  and how easy it is to get burned by really, really bad music (especially at $30 a cd) I'm very cautious before getting anything.  Much like I am with Anime, 98% of everything made sucks and sometimes it's just not worth the time trying to weed out the good things.  Of course if you can't buy it here in the US via normal means (ie not import or ebay) I tend to just download, if they don't want to let me buy their music (the music labels) without jumping through hoops and paying twice as much as normal (which the labels don't see any of that extra money) then I'm not going to buy it.  Plus most of this stuff isn't licensed in the US.

If you like the more rock-style stuff, you just might like Abingdon. I'm ok with their general style--it's a little avant-guard and it has a nice edge to it. My only problem is the reason I mentioned before. If you're interested, the most accessible things my be "Howling" (which is the current opening for Darker than Black), and "Innocent Sorrow" (which was the first opening for D. Gray-man).

I'll definitely try Chara and the Asian Kung-fu albums.

Yes, I guess I loved him too
I can still see him in my mind climbin' that hill
Did he make it to the top, well he probably did and dropped
Struck down by the strength of the will
Ain't nothin' left here partner, just the dust of a plague that has left this whole town afraid
From now on, this'll be where you're from
Let the dead bury the dead. Your time will come
Let hot iron blow as he raised the shade

Well, there ain't no goin' back when your foot of pride come down
Ain't no goin' back

-Bob Dylan "Foot of Pride"

This song started playing on my way home from work tonight and I couldn't help but start singing it as I was riding my bike down Elmwood. People were probably turning their heads wondering what I was up to.

But seriously, this song is all sorts of fun with a beat that really gets you going with it. It's off the "Bootleg Series Vol. 1-3" cd collection.

Recently I have been listening to the new Smashing Pumpkins album.  Its pretty good.  Doomsday Clock is a sweet song.

Other than that, I have my mp3 disc of all the 311 albums, and a mp3 disc with all the Jamiroquai albums.  Other than that, I stick with Linkin Park...even though thier new album was kind iffy.

The new linken park is their best one yet, it's not filled with nothing but whiny emo crap like their last ones, I don't know how people can listen too an album that's nothing but one angry song after another.

I agree that some of the new LP songs are very good.  There are 1 or 2 tracks on it that feel like throw-away b-sides.  Oddly, I have listened to some of the b-sides, and they are better than some of the final tracks that made the album.  I still feel that Meteora is thier best album overall.

Love the new LP album.  And I'd be quite surprised NotBookstoreGuy if there weren't a few of the b-sides from this most recent album that you thought better than those on the album.  There were like 130 of them after all.  Absolute chaos at how many there were.  Dang.  Say, where did you listen to those b-sides anyhow?  I'd love to find some more Linkin Park material.

I need more good Indie bands. One of my recent discoveries is Robbers on High Street -- they have the lyrical attributes of Ray Davies with the pop music sensibilities of Eels. I can recommend them. Another is Freezerpop, but I've only heard one song of theirs. Liked it, but I won't recommend a band based on that.

The problem with indie  bands is indie fans. So many of them advocate a band *because* they're indie. Mogwai being a good example. A band with less of a feel for a good tune can't be found. Anyway, if any of you know a good band with the groove comparable to Dandy Warhols, Fountains of Wayne, Eels, or the like, please let me know. Most of my leads come from The Onion's AV club -- which is how I found Robbers on High Street. There promise to be some leads this week. I'll keep you posted if I find sumpin'.

M. Ward is one of my new favorite musicians that I've recently found. He's got these really great rhythms and lyrics; my favorite track is "Big Boat." If you're online in the next 10-15 minutes I can send it to ya. Good stuff there. Also, Chris Smither's is a great guitarist in the tradition of Dylan, Nelson, Cash, etc, if you might be looking for that.

I suggest you try eMusic and just swim through the catalogue they've got there. I found some good stuff before I quit my trial subscription. You get 25 free tracks to download.

Sitting at a comptuer all day I end up listening to a lot of music and as such getting myself quite a large library that I am very proud of.

I got into downloading a lot of piano compositions (due to my love of the instrument and desire to master it myself one day...), so currently I'm listening to

Piano Concerto No.1 in E Minor, Op. 11: II. Romance (Larghetto) composed by Chopin performed by Charles Dutoit, Jorge Bolet & Orchestre symphonique de Montréal

Oh no, even my co-worker has more than me, im only at a humble 32GB (about 5700).  but im still proud of it!  I'm still young, give me time. ;)

So I'm curious, what among those are, lets say, the top 5 most listened to albums?
Title: Re: What are you Listening to?
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on January 24, 2008, 02:24:58 PM
5700 is not a lowly number. I just wonder how much I have compared to "normal" people.
(I got at least half my collection by subscribing to unlimited downloads from Napster and converting the files to mp3, thus I have everything by any performer I ever liked but never bought albums from)

You may refer to my Last.FM page for listening statistics:
http://www.last.fm/user/theLemur/

I don't listen to albums, generally, unless they're specifically designed as albums, things like Tommy, or The Planets, or The Wall. My usual approach is to throw everything into the playlist (it takes several minutes for any playback software to compile this, I've tried winamp, itunes, and WMP) shuffle it a few times, and then play it through. You know, until I have music I need to add to it and reshuffle it. Currently I have roughly 1000 songs I haven't put in the playlist yet. I may not, since the vast majority of them were gleaned from the Onion AV Club's list of top 25 albums of 2007 (some of which were released in 2006).

On that page you have my top all time listened to artists. I suspect if I were to sync my iPod up with that data more faithfully Rush would move up a few notches.

My classical is, unfortunately, difficult to categorize. Some of it has the misfortune of being labelled as by the performer rather than the composer, as I think (most) classical/concert music should be labelled. I need to fix that.

Excellent!  Thank's for the link.  I've never heard of They Might Be Giants, sounded good, downloading the album Flood right now.

My playcount is a little skewed since I switched from WMP to iTunes awhile back, but currently among my most listened to artists are:

Nobuo Uematsu (he's the composer of the music in the Final Fantasy video games, I got all the "Piano Collections" albums, they are wonderful!)
Bullet For My Valentine
Lily Allen
Imogen Heap
Blaqk Audio
The Shins
Clint Mansell (the soundtrack to The Fountain *highly recommend*)

well, what he listens to seems to be more classical and metal, not really in the circles TMBG floats around. Now if he'd said he'd never heard of the Beatles or the Rolling Stones, (like a missionary companion I had once), that'd be wrong, what with their cultural significance and all.  TMBG doesn't really float in any circles anymore. The Shins would be the closest, in terms of fan base crossover, but I don't see that as an automatic association.

But yes, Flood is an excellent album to start with. It's really what launched them into the spotlight. My other favs to listen to as albums are John Henry and Mink Car

heehee yeah... well most of my music comes from the "people who bought this also bought these" lists in iTunes.  They Might Be Giants are quite unique.  It's funny actually, I was chatting with some people and someone quoted a line from Particle Man, but no one else in the group knew what it was from, they just thought he was making fun of Spider-Man, or at least if they did know it was from TMBG no one said anything.  This all happened yesterday and then today I come across the song.   :o

Crux,

What do you think of all of the transitions/progressions Atreyu has gone through from Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses all the way to Lead Sails Paper Anchor? Especially, what do you think of the fact that Brandon Saller has pretty much taken over the lead from Alex Varkatzas?

Oh and just a little FYI, Atreyu is on the Taste of Chaos tour with A7X and BFMV, just in case you already didn't know...

I actually don't know anything about the band Atreyu or their history.  Tbh, imo, their sound is something less than memorable.  Don't get me wrong, I enjoy listening to them, but amongst the plethora of artists out there they don't really stand out.   :-\

...Now that I think about it though, you could argue that point about any band.  I think the bands you tend to care more about are ones you are somehow personally/emotionally vested in.  As such, ask me my thoughts on AFI or Dispatch and I'd have more to say.  :P

At current, really digging Buckethead & Friends - Nottingham Lace.

Mostly I listen to 80's metal and rock,  though I do listen to quite a bit of rock and metal from today. I've also got a tad bit of rap and trance/techno on my playlist, but out of my nearly 20,000 songs, they probably make up less than 1,000 of them. And then half of the rap is "nerd rap" - which is quite fun.

Has anyone bought the Chevelle cd Vena Sera? If so is the bonus track, In Debt to Earth, on there? I bought that cd awhile back and then found out about that song later while browsing through itunes. But, you can't buy that song from itunes because it is a bonus track only for when you buy the cd, or so it says. The only problem with that is I own the cd and that song is not on there. Which is quite upsetting because it is a really good tune. So did they add that track onto later additions of the album or what?

Con te partirò sung by Anrea Bocelli.

A really great song.

Failing that also listening to "I don't love you" by My Chemical Romance and "Vampires will never hurt you", "Famous last words" etc, by them also - very beautiful songs all of them.

If you happen to be a country music normally instead or rock/pop  I'm sure you'll still very much enjoy "I don't love you" it's one of those songs that really spreads well across the genres and is beautiful. If nothing else pop onto their website and watch the gorgeous video for it~!

My Chemical Romance seems to be unfairly lumped with the whole ultru-lame emo-ness stuff but thay actually make really nice, fun music - when heading down on a verrry long drive last year mother listened through all three of their studio albums and she's an english teacher and still thought they were quite talented so don't fear the Romance!

And U2 is really rocking me at the moment, So are Silverchair and Powderfinger.

Let's see... the last few songs I downloaded from iTunes are:

Check Yes Juliet - We the Kings (gotta love the free single of the week)
I Don't Wanna Be in Love (Dance Floor Anthem) - Good Charlotte
These Hard Times - Matchbox Twenty

I think the last song I actually listened to was Bach's Little Fugue in G Minor.  Yes, there's a music geek somewhere inside of me... ;)

Then again, Porno Graffitti's (it's Japanese, excuse the weird name) "Neo Melodramatic" has the same effect on me. It just demands I listen to it for an hour straight!

I'm starting to drift away from the Barnaked Ladies, their new stuff is not as good, and Steve's voice was way betterin his earlier stuff.  And he also kind of messed up his career a bit with that cocaine stunt, especially just after they put out a children's CD.
I really like Hous of Doc right now, and the Decemberists, and Moxy Fruvous.  And what the heck, of course the Barnaked Ladies are still one of my favorite bands.

Title: Re: What are you Listening to?

I know exactly how you feel.  And the fact that no only do you know Ayu, but it heard meantion of Hiki.  What about BoA, Lisa, Gackt, Koda Kumi, Nami Amuro (Not sure on the spelling of her name)?

Also compleately agree with the comment about Guilty.  My favorite thought is Marrionette.  Have you heard the songs from the Mirrorile World single?  If you compair the new version of You against the old it's like "HOLY COW!!!  You have changed!"  but it's so subtle you don't notice unless you listen to them back to back.
Title: Re: What are you Listening to?
Post by: Chaos on November 17, 2008, 05:52:01 AM
J-Pop is really expensive to import. I have heard of Gackt, but not any of the others. What I usually do is find a song from a particular artist, and if I like it, I will go the extra mile and buy the CDs from Japan. My Ayu collection isn't even close to being finished: I only have Rainbow, Guilty, and Secret (which is coming in the mail very soon), along with a bunch of singles that I didn't technically buy -.-.

I normally try to avoid singles because they are too pricey for the amount of stuff on them, but now that I'm looking at Mirrorcle World, it looks really cool, considering Mirror was awesome.

So, right now, I'm focusing on her main albums, because that's where the goods are.

But, I do have Porno Graffitti's THUMPx and Siam Shade's III and IV. I like Ayumi Hamasaki the best, however. I've certainly been listening to Guilty almost constantly. I don't think there's a single song on there that I dislike, which is extremely rare for any album I hear. For some reason, glitter is the catchiest one on there, so I like just putting on the Repeat and listen to that one over and over.

For multiple days straight.

Yup, sounds like me.  When I go through an ayu binge I'll just keep on listeing to it.

two suggestions for getting the music.  1: itunes now has a compleate j-pop section.  2: crunchyroll.com (http://crunchyroll.com").  It's basically a japanese focused youtube.  (Of course, you still have issues getting Ayu vids since Avex is such a freaking control freak, but there's tons of other good stuff).  One of my current favorites is Black Diamond (http://www.crunchyroll.com/media-345442/DOUBLE-BLACK-DIAMOND-ft-Namie-Amuro.html")
Title: Re: What are you Listening to?
Post by: Chaos on November 17, 2008, 06:03:18 AM
Actually, that's not just for Ayu. That's just what I do when I get a song I really like (I'm looking at you, "Neo Melodramatic").

But... but... I don't use iTunes for my rampant, irrational hatred of iPods :P

Ah, so that's why I can never find proper music videos of her stuff. I always thought that was strange, but now it makes sense.

Yay for JPop!  I'm a big fan of Ayumi, Utada Hikaru, and I've enjoyed what I've heard of BoA.  I generally try to go for JPop compilations over albums, so I get a collection of quality singles—as has been mentioned, Japanese music is expensive to import here.

I still listen to a fair amoun of NZH (Not JPop, but excellent foreign stuff.  Check out their music on Youtube).  I went out and bought their CD when I was in Canada this last summer, and I don't regret it (and it sure beat paying $45 to import the blasted thing!)

Yay for JPop!  I'm a big fan of Ayumi, Utada Hikaru, and I've enjoyed what I've heard of BoA.

Whaaaaaa? BoA? Jpop? Please look to the northwest a bit. To that glorious country that brought us Epik High, Clazziquai, Big Bang, and Rain! Japanese people scare me immensely.  Some of the music is okay, but the culture is an frightening beast. I don't know what happened to the Japanese when they migrated off the mainland, but they make Chinese people look sane. ;)

The Toasters are awesome! My HS band teacher was a huge fan of Second/Third Wave, so we listened to stuff like the Allstonians quite often. We even played "Bumblebee Tuna" by Mephiskapheles in pep band!

Ach, now I'm listening to The Toasters and Epik High in one playlist! The weird, it won't wash off!

I'll admit that it did come off a bit harsh, but I've lived with Japanese people stateside. About two and a half years worth in total. At one point with seven different Japanese guys. Their culture is radically different from ours. I loved the guys I lived with. They were all awesome people, but the culture is an extreme change from what we are used to. I was poking fun at the culture->music->Generous Knight's music tastes.  :-/

Sorry about that. I should have made it more clear. Perhaps through the use of an adeptly placed emoticon... Yes, an emoticon would work quite well....

And also does not mean that their music doesn't rock.

Two artists does not a playlist make, unless it does, in which case, you have fairly limited tastes in music.

I'm pretty sure they meant that there was more on the playlist, but the two artists mentioned were merely on it as well. At least that's what I got out of it.

I date myself, but I still listen to Shawn Colvin.  She's one of the best singer/songwriters around, especially the early stuff which never became popular.  Intelligent lyrics, though moody.

I also enjoy Sara Groves, Switchfoot and Reliant K, my daughter's favorite.

New music: check out Citizen Cope.  Surprisingly thoughtful young hip hop songwriter.

They are surprisingly original and fresh.  Excellent musicians.  My husband used to surf with the Switchfoot brothers' dad (uncle?) in San Diego/L.A.... great family.  Caught Reliant K on the Leno show two nights ago.  Had to record it for my 16-year-old rabid fan.

I saw this weird version I forget the name for it but it's like when it's on a stage ( I saw it off a disc), people are all around, and the actors are on the stage, but the main ones don't really move around. There are the ensembles that move around, and sometimes characters do, too, but the main ones mostly just stand at floor-microphones and sing and act there (the orchestra and chorus is completely visible in the back). But anways, the guy who played Jean Valjean in that version got payed $51 MILLION!!! Crazy, right??

The song: "On Top of The World" reminds me of Mistborn because of 1. the voice sounds just like I imagined for Kell. 2. The main lyrics are: "Lets spend tonight on top of the world. We can do anything be can be anything. I'll meet you tonight on top of the World as you can see your only in my dreams."

I mean seriously doesn't that sound like something Kell would say or something close to it.

hey, random here, but my school did Les Mis as a musical 2 years ago, and it was amazing! We had a live orchestra under the stage, and the singing and acting was phenomenal. It felt and sounded almost like a professional perfomance,  I was totally hooked on Les Mis and musicals in general after that.

But who couldn't love Les Mis? One of the greatest books ever written and a great musical, what's not to like?

I'm listening to the new U2 album. I like it better than the last 2 they put out, but it isn't Achtung Baby by any means. No Line on the Horizon does have a lot of the vibes from Achtung Baby, but it also pulls in some of the more traditional Edge-style guitar riffs.

Over all, I like it.

Next on my list to wait for is Depeche Mode (not expecting much to be honest), 311 (thank heavens), AFI (sweet!!), and Jamiroquai (they better release this soon or I will go insane).

A bit of a bunch of different bands. Jimmy Eat World, Making April, Between the Trees, Anberlin, Foreverinmotion, Secondhand Serenade, The Band of Horses, Snow Patrol, Straylight Run, The Format...etc.

And I totally agree about the hit songs versus CD's. Oftentimes the best songs are the ones that aren't popular...Or it's that the popular ones are played so much that they start driving you crazy, and you need something else....

Right now I'm listening to Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Before that it was Nickel Creek, but I was trying to revise some dialog and the lyrics kept getting in the way.

I will not protest if it is playing, though I do not own any of their albums.

Right now I'm listening to Mozart's Horn Concertos performed by the incredible Dennis Brain. Remastered of course.

Panic! at the Disco is decent. I like the songs that I've heard of so far...Granted, I've pretty much only heard the ones that are on the radio, so that's not much...

And I love Secondhand Serenade, too! I saw him in concert last November, when he played in Pocatello. My first ever rock concert. It was good. REALLY good. The only sad thing is that I spent almost the entire concert recording videos on my phone to show my sisters, who were unable to come....And then I ended up losing all those videos. It sucked.

And Ryos--Nickel Creek? I love Nickel Creek.

Well, the concert was sold out. No one could buy tickets at the door. And I didn't have  ticket....I lucked out, getting in. If I'd gone down to Poky with anyone else, I wouldn't have been getting in to that concert...

I've started listening to the Another Heaven (http://anotherheaven.podomatic.com/) podcasts.  It's introducing me to a lot of foreign music (especially the Korean stuff, which I'm less familiar with).  They have included clips by Se7en, DBSK, and Super Junior, you'll be glad to know, Miyabi.

And Wilson:  I did that with NZH before I bought their album in Canada (it would have cost like $50 to import to the US).

Currently listening to Five Finger Death Punch's album "Way of the fist". I can't get enough of it.

Listening to Eurovision 2009 music.  These are all available on YouTube.

My favorites (somewhat in order-ish):

Urban Symphony - Rändajad (Estonia) - A haunting piece with vocals & strings, new agey with ethnic/folk elements, but just a touch more uptempo than might be expected from this description
Waldo's People - Lose Control (Finland) - I'd probably describe it as "hard trance", vaguely reminiscent of Scooter.  A nice dance song
Alexander Rybat - Fairytale (Norway) - A very fun, up-beat song combining elements of pop and folk-rock.  The mvid includes some cool Norwegian traditional dancing.  FYI:  Alexander's violin playing is majorly faked (even the frets—suggesting he can't play).  This song won Eurovision 2009, however
Marko Kon & Milaan - Cipela (Serbia) - kind of a funny song with an accordian and a guy in a deep voice who is speak-singing half the time.  Strangely addicting
Sasha Son - Love (Lithuania) - Piano, Voice, orchestra, & a very mild electric guitar.  It's a pretty song, generally pop with some jazz/R&B elements
Inga & Anush - Jan Jan (Armenia) - a fun dancy song with some ethnic instruments.  Vaguely reminds me of some punjabi stuff, but with a more Western pop feel overall
Krassimir Avramov - Illusion (Bulgaria) - Countertenor singing pop.  Some versions of the mvid are rather NSFW
Christina Metaxa - Firefly (Cyprus) - a fairly standard (soft) soft rock song.  Definitely on the pretty side, though
Chiara - What If We (Malta) - Somewhat similar in style to some Josh Groban stuff, but sung by a female vocalist, and with more "umph"
Regina - Bistra Voda (Bosnia & Herzegovina) - acoustic rock, a bit like a march, with a slightly folk twist.  Extra points for offering the song for download at their website

Also worth mentioning is Sveltlana Loboda - Be My Valentine (Anti-Crisis Girl) (Ukraine) - this is a very weird song, noisy, dancey, and employing a lot of brass.  The mvid is very weird and risqué.  While I don't really like this song, it's addicting

The audio/tonal quality is much better than pretty much everything I've heard from the "8-bit" genre, and I'm pretty sure he uses a lot more simultaneous voices than an 8-bit console could put out. Those two qualities make this really stand out in my book. Plus, it only costs four dollars.

You can listen to a few of the songs if you play the demo of the game...

Razorblade, from Blue October.

I love how intense their songs are!  "The End" creeps me out a bit, but they have a few really cute ones...  And some really creepy ones...

Lots of stuff... I've really been in a Fiona Apple mood lately, though... and Fleetwood Mac.  I've got a thing for those husky sounding women... what can I say?

Along with my eccletic collection of Jazzy Blues, Celtic Folk (no I'm not Celtic I just like the music), Hebrew Prayers (Cantors can be Pop-Stars too), and Contemporary Christian Worship -- I've just started following a handful of new artists.

Three highlights are La Roux, Florence in the Machine, and Beirut.

La Roux and Flo are predictable, given my years of post-punk/new wave enthusiasm.  But Beirut is a stumper.

These guys manage a jazzy downbeat that is remaniscent of Depeche Moede, but they get there from some very odd influences.  They fuse Oaxacan Polka, Sonoran Ranchero and Chicago Blues with (of all things) Illyrian folk!  It's like Transylvanian farmers got together to jam with Philonius Monk and a Mariachi band from Los Angeles.  Surreal only begins to describe it.  The oddest part is that I like it.  Check it out if you have a moment.

I recently began playing Deus Ex; Invisible War and loved some of the tracks on there, which turned out to originate from a decent band called Kidney Thieves. Loving some of their stuff at the moment  ;D

Currently listening to Sunday Bloody Sunday, U2

I'm listening to Ayumi Hamasaki's new single, which is really, really.

A single I actually like enough that I don't feel it's a gimmick? This is a phenomenal achievement, folks.

Metal is the *******!  ;D

I agree. I have Slayer's newest album on repeat in my car right now. (not right now, but, you know) and often attend local shows with bands like Acerose, Acaro and Foreshadow the Fall and a new band which is wicked oldschool Reborn a Weapon

The Good Natured - "Your Body is a Machine"

Catchy, and right up my alley.  Also, I think her accent really makes the song.

Little Boots.

She's sort of Electro-pop, with serious Electronica elements but often pop-like vocals.

This might be my favorite song of hers:

(Though, really, I like her whole album)

Kamelot! Their new album comes out in a week. I am pretty psyched! The first single's music video has been released, and can be seen here: (Kamelot - The Great Pandemonium (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woRaHKNEs8Y)) It's the first track on the album, and probably the hardest. Kamelot has a tradition of making the first track a bit harder than their standard, so while I'm not a fan of all of the screaming, the rest of the album should be awesome.

While the previews are getting me excited, the album title? Not so much. Nightwish's The Poet and the Pendulum was huge, and released just a few years ago. Thus, "Poetry for the Poisoned" is not acceptable as an album title in this genre for a few years yet. Of course, I've never been a fan of Kamelot's album titles, so meh. Some of their songs have awesome titles though.

In related news, their vocalist, Khan, is sick. Literally ill. The most unwell singer to be born. But seriously, all jokes aside, they just announced that he has some undisclosed sickness. I hope he is able to overcome it and continue singing. It would be a shame to lose a great talent like his.

This album is extremely good. Definitely alot better than Ghost Opera.  =)

They originally had planned to finish out the NA tour with singer Michael Erikson(from Circus Maximus) and decided to cancel it instead. I'm glad they did. I can personally say that Kamelot live is one of the best shows I have ever been to(and I've been to literally dozens of concerts), and it would not be the same without Roy Khan on vox.

According to an interview with Youngblood(http://www.metalpaths.com/interviews/kamelot-thomas-youngblood,5294); Khan's "illness" is some sort of breakdown.  They also appear to be doing the 2011 EU with Rhapsody singer Fabio Lione now. =/
