Title: Avatar
Post by: 42 on February 26, 2005, 07:10:57 PM
So nick has a new cartoon called Avatar.
I like it over-all. It reminds me of the fantasy cartoons from the late eighties, but with better animation.

Anyone else seen this?

Just the first episode, but I'm making a note to try to watch the rest of them.  There are a lot of chibi-type faces in it, but somehow they seem to fit well into the show, unlike other cartoons that just can't pull it off.
*cough* teen titans*cough*

I love avatar!!  I've watched every episode up to date, and have gotten way into the plot.  The characters are great, but what astounds me most is the world building the creators have been able to put across!  They have created a world and magic system that makes sense, and has so many paralells that it's amazing!  Also, it's funny, and not that slap in the face sort of humour that family guy or simpsons has, but some clever stuff.  I think it's a show that kids and adults can enjoy, and has an amazing story to it.  The storyline is great too, the typical hero sent to stop the darklord bit, but it's well done, and the story is good.  I especially love when Aang, the protagonist has to chose between love itself , and the power he needs to save those he loves.  A hard choice, no?  I think it's one of the best animated shows out there.

I see the occasional episode, and I like them. I think it's legions better than most of what passes for cartoons these days.
In fact, it's kind of the modern cartoon classic, and I think it's restored my faith in domestically produced cartoons after a generally bleak era.

(except SBSQ - which generally appeals to a bit of an older audience ironically...)

Ya, exactly, it's got new ideas, but it still keeps things classic.  And the amount of research they put into the show is astounding.  They have a martial arts specialist on staff to work in conjunciton with the animators to get the moves right, all bending is based on a real martial art.

What set's it apart from other cartoons I think is that it seems more... polished, like it's all worked through and there are no loose ends.

Yes, it is very polished and well rounded - that's a good way of putting it.  :D

I hope the newest episode comes out soon, the delay is causing quite a stir in some of the forums, and there are so many unaswered questions, with so few episodes left.

ya, well as you can probably tell this didn't happen.  Nick sent out a e-mail to sites with that date a few days before the 18th and said the date was wrong that that was from an old annoucement from last year and that the new date is July 14th (yes after all 4 season 3 DVDs are out).

(Spoilers for those who haven't seen the finale)
Just bumping this to the top again, since the awe-inspiring, amazingly intense and crazy finale came out yesterday!!!!
I just finished watching it last night, and let me say, spot on to the creators, they saw their vision through and finished up the story nicely.  The end fight between Zuko and Azula was beautiful, Azula's transformation was disturbing, yet heart breaking, Aang's mercy to the firelord, and his final solution was perfect, almost all of the plot arcs were tied up nicely, and Aang's fight against the fire lord was just soo soo impressive, it left me speechless.  It did a good job of going past the final action and tying things up nice, without pulling a JK Rowling (the whole 19 years into the future bit).  This crazily deep series went out with a bang, with this spectacular conclusion!  The only questions I still have are what did happen to Zuko's mother, they kind of left that in the blank, but I can see why.  I just wanted her to come back and put Azula back together, I felt really sorry for her, even though she was a cold and terrible person, she was still human underneath, and she's still just a kid.  I just wanted her to be healed, but It doesn't even show what happens to her afterward.  That's my one small small small small small small small criticism of the ending, is that there should have been some Resolution in Azula's plot arc.  Other than that small small bit, it was fantastic!
And I like how the creators played up the relationship between Katara and Zuko, that msut have had those crazy Zutara people on the forums going.  I knew that Zuko would probably just go back to Mai, the creators weren't going to pull a stunt like that, the show is not about the love lives of the characters after all, some people just read way too much into things!

Sorry to bump back to the top, a show that is done and gone for quite some time, but I came across this thread and have to show the love for Avatar.  Major fan.  A show that my kids and I both can thoroughly enjoy.  Fantastic idea for a show and wonderful execution.  Great characters, character development, character arc, storytelling, themes and moralizing, and on and on.   And the finale was superb.

The Last Air Bender? I Saw the teaser-trailer before Transformers 2. It looks pretty neat. M. Night Shayamalan is directing.

yeah, dont confuse this with the movie Avatar by James Cameron. And hopefully Shayamalan wont ruin The Last Air Bender. His last 2 movies were garbage.

I've been an avatard for a while, and so I've been trying to follow the movie info since it was first announced, and I have to say I'm midly impressed so far.  I'm sure that this movie is just going to cover the first season.

A great person to follow to get information is http://rufftoon.deviantart.com/.  She worked on the cartoon series and one of her journals links you to a WHOLE BUNCH of the old animaters on devart.  Plus, some of the fan art (is it fan art if they were part of the animation team for the actual show?) is funny.

So will it be a planned trilogy then? following the plot of the TV series?

Too bad we have to wait until summer 2010 to see this.

I don't remember for sure if it was a planned triology or not.  But really, that's the only way that makes sense.  You simply can't fit the entire series into two hours.  I'll see if I can find the original announcement and check it out.  (The original artical I read talked about the fact that there was this HUGE fight over the title)
