Title: So Mormons Can Dance!
Post by: Shrain on June 14, 2006, 10:31:34 PM
haha. Okay, I admit it, I've been watching So You think You Can Dance on Fox. There's this kid, Benji Schwimmer, that I really thought was awesome. Western Swing Dance champion, come to find out. But I kept thinking,  "There's something about him....." I started wondering if he was Mormon.

And he is! So weird. I thought I was imagining things--until he said something about how certain "stuff" like intimacy is for after marriage. Big clue there. Then he mentioned on stage how he was "away" for two years. A judge asked, "Doing what?" "Serving a mission for my church in Mexico." A ha! I knew it. Anyway, he's hilarious.

I'll bet that his cousin, Heidi Groskreutz, is also a member too. They were spectacular to watch doing their swing routine. The kind of dancing that makes you grin when you watch.

There was an article in the Daily Universe about how there are three dancers on that show from Utah: Benji, Allison, and Jaymz and they all did really great last night!

We get an opportunity to present our culture on national TV, and we do it with a guy named Jaymz?

GAY!!!

But, honestly, I'm more disturbed by "Benji"

If nothing else it will convince the public that mormon parents are incredibly cruel.

Benji sounds like a fantasy name.

Benji, the farmboy with a mysterious past (tm).

Well, I think of a raggedy dog with sweet brown eyes.

I think of my quiet friend Benji from high school who got a 36 on his ACT's and went to the local community college.

yeah, Benji. Ruff, ruff! I think his last name is worse. Makes me think of the guy who played the much annoying Ross on Friends.

But... regardless, he's fun to watch.

Benji? Hahahah. I think of a guy that girls a lot more than guys do.

(I.E. Ladies man, the kind that will sweep you off your feet, but at the first sign of trouble will leave you in the gutter)  :)

"a guy that girls a lot"

Hum..... Oh, the difference a word can make! lol

Aaanyway, I just realized that the Jaymz guy used to be this incorrigable little scout in my Orem Heatheridge ward! My mom just wrote me an email asking if I remembered the Tuailevas because he's on the show. Ha. How weird.

It's so true that having dances does not necessarily mean we know how to dance. I went to all the stake dances as a teenager, and I can't tell you how many times I was leading during the slow dance. If I didn't lead, we'd end up just shuffling in place. Sometimes I'd prompt the guy, with things like, "Hey, how about a twirl?" or "Do you know how to do a dip?" so there'd be some variety. And I usually had to ask the guys to dance too, because if you didn't ask, all the good guys got taken real quick.

Except for my stalker, who always asked girls to dance, actually knew how to dance, and always made sure to slow dance at least once with me. We even would swing dance, but on the lifts I was always scared he would drop me because even though he was taller, he was thinner than me. (And, if you know me, that's pretty thin.) Ah, memories. /end nostalgia

My high school stalker aside, guys who can dance are very attractive. It is such a lost art. My dad can really lead--dancing with him at our Senior Farewell was strange because I wasn't used to a guy leading and I almost tripped over my own feet!

I don't like dancing at all. There's too much pressure.

So two of the judges have picked their favorites to win, even though there are 14 dancers left. Mary has chosen Allison (the 18-year-old from Orem) and Nigel has picked Benji, the one who just got off of his mission. What I thought was really cool is Nigel said he's not one to pick favorites, but that every time Benji comes out on stage, he lights up the whole stage. Nigel said (and I'm quoting from Fox's Web site), "If you don't win, I'll be very surprised." How cool!

I really think Benji is consistently great, and I hope Heidi and Allison can hold their own, too.

I loved the fox trot couple the other night. Now *that* is a classy dance. The green costume the girl wore was so gorgeous.

How weird is this?  One of the girls in my Drawing Class grew up with this guy (same ward and everything).

"It's a small world after all..."

Yeah, that's kind of bizzare. But that seems to happen a lot among LDS people. I mean, you guys know that Ken guy from Jeopardy, after all.

I'm digging out dusty old memories, and yep, church dances sucked. I seem to remember my friend's older brother steering me around the room in circles, while he gingerly braced me with both hands, as if I might lurch at him at any moment and smash the invisible Book of Mormon between us.

On the other hand, my sis would give me a dirty look for saying that--she was on the UVSC Ballroom Dance team at one point.

I met my wife at a dance. I think. Sometime in that age.
