it might just be me but forums with lots of topics seem to be getting ones at the bottom marked as new.

I know, it's the screwiest bug I've seen in a forum. I just need to hit the button that deletes old messages...

No, it never did. However, if you hit "Mark topics as read" in the thread view, it'll get rid of it for a while.
