Title: Forum RPG Mod
Post by: Brian on May 17, 2003, 09:06:23 PM
I like the forum's RPG mod -- I chose to follow the path of the Student of Honor. :) But I'm curious, where does it come from? I couldn't find it on the website dedicated to YaBB mods. Is it a Custom mod? And if so, is there any way I can get it? I'd like to do a conversion for YaBB SE.

The forum class system is what you get when you put a bunch of guys who love RPG's, love messing around, know how to change code and have lots of time when they are supposed to be "working" together.

It is meant to be for a computer RPG slash chatroom, but Spriggan has gone all iffy on that front.

So its a custom mod then. Is there some way I could see the source changes for it?

Ask EUOL or Tage.  It's EUOL's mod.  As for the game part of it, well we'll see.  I'm still working on aspects of it so it could get done.

I can send you all the Perl stuff EUOL did for it. It's probably very messy, as EUOL is an author, and only taught himself enough Perl to do what he wanted to it.

Sprig, I'd recommend not worrying about the little flash thing you'd talked about doing. Sometime in the future, we'll be getting a very revamped forum. Ooooh... foreshadowing...

well I'm working on the server aspect now.  Nothing to do with the forum.

Sure, I'd love to take a look at the code. I'm not much of a Perl coder, in fact I can't stand Perl, and if the code is as messy as you're suggesting it could be rough going ;) but I'm willing to give it a shot.

For now, basically I'd just be attempting to convert the mod for the PHP/MySQL flavor of YaBB (YaBB SE). I'll remember to ask permission if I decide to make any huge changes. :)

Edit: In case it wasn't obvious, you can just e-mail me the code via the li'l button on the side of this post.

Ok Brian, I just sent the stripped-down source off.

And Sprig, just make sure the flash game doesn't depend on any of the forum stats or anything.

no the only thing right now I'm ever going to want to take from the forum is weither or not someone is loged in.  And if you're swtiching to the PHP Yabba version it will only make that more easy :).  That way when you log into the chat room you're name will allready will be inputed and you won't have to worry about someone else takeing your name.

What? Switching to YaBB SE?? Woohoo! I love YaBB SE. Could be because I'm very experienced with PHP and hardly at all with Perl, but whatever.

No, not switching to YaBB SE. While nice, it has some security holes that cost me a lot of time once.

Oh. I guess I misunderstood Spriggan.

You know, now that school's out, I suppose I could tweak the forum side some more.  What would you guys like to see changed?

Incidentally, YaBB SE has put a lot of effort into correcting security issues lately. The current version is 1.5.2, which really shouldn't be any less secure than YaBB 1 Gold.
