Title: Someone explain CLIX to me
Post by: Mad Dr Jeffe on April 19, 2003, 10:27:59 AM
I'm just not sure I get it.

I was bout to give a quick rundown, but then I remembered that I've done that at least three times in the various reviews I've written. Read those, and then ask a more specific question.

By the way, I didn't mean to shut your question down: I'm more than happy to talk about clix games with an interested party. I just didn't want to repeat the basics, and I wasn't sure if you've read them yet.

Yes I had, I have just never seen it played.
You know what would be cool for the purposes of this site. If you digitally photographed a game and posted how it works turn by turn.

Just my .02$

humm if there were no legal issues with that we could.  Fell was going to show me some time and I could bring my digital camera

I don't see why there would be legal issues. It *IS* a review site, and that would be tantamount to advertising. Sorta like demo games in a store. You're not giving away minis, or anything. I think you should do it.

If anything they'd thank you.

I've never heard of problems with posting graphical battle reports.  For all I've heard, it's encouraged.

The only problem I forsee is that one of the best part of graphical battle reports (for WHFB, Mordheim, 40K, Battletech) is to show off paint jobs and terrain.  Since both are standard with CLIX games (though terrain need not be), they're just not as entertaining.  Also, you can't see the dials.  THey just don't have the pizzazz of othet bat reps.  Not to say they can't be entertaining, but you've really got to work it to makie it more interesting.

WK have some on their site if you want to check them out, also.

Copyright isn't an issue here, just time and effort (time I have plenty of, but effort...well, it kind of goes against the spirit of the site to put a lot of effort into anything). That said, a graphic report or series of graphic reports would be awesome if I could find a good way of doing it. Mustard and I tried one with Mordheim a while back and the pictures turned out pretty horrible. Heroclix is more forgivig visually, however, because of the standardized look of everything, so we ought to try it again. Who knows? If it turns out to be easy to make and post, we could make it a regular feature.

In the interim, I will get a more textual answer to ElJeffe's question soon.

It won't necessarily make the most sense strategically, but if you do a visual report, make sure each side has two basic colors that can be seen, that way, even if we don't see details, we can tell what's going on. (perhaps a 2 figure team each or something to keep it simple).

The problem that we had with the first battle report we tried is that we were getting the images from a digital video camera rather than a regular camera.  The images weren't as high resolution as we wanted.  On top of that, while we have a lot of great painted models and scenery, we had a purple table cloth underneath it and it looked really awful.

We could do small themed armies, like good vs. evil--maybe X-Men vs. the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants or something that people will recognize.

Yay for purple tablecloths!

Fell, yeah, something like that would work well.

My camera has a macro, and we can do the "player" in flash.  Basicaly a program that advances 1 frame at a time with explinations.  That's so easy to do I could have something done in like 30 min or less.  I've got plenty of time now that I'm not in school.

Something like that could work, Spriggan, but I don't know if it would be the best way. When I read a strategy article or a battle report, I like to have all the pictures laid out where I can see them. I've seen some impressive flash battle reports with Warhammer, however, so it might work.

what i had in mind was something realy simple like what wizards have on thier site for learning to play thier games.  Is what you have in mind more of just a few html pages with pictues to go along with each step?  Also do you happen to know were I can find some of those flash guids you saw?

Yeah, I was just thinking of html with words and jpgs--it's simple, but it's what I like to read. I'll see if I can dig up that flash report for you.

cool. that would be a nice and simple way, let me know sometime when you want to do it and you can use my camera.

Ok, Heroclix question here. What set do you like more? Marvel or DC?

Also, what about that Sentinel figure? I also just saw the Sinestro figure as well. Are those worth it?

I'm not a big fan of either big figure, but I've never played with them so take my opinion for what it's worth.

As for whether Marvel or DC is better, they're both part of the same game. They have the same powers, the same rules, and the same everything. Most tournaments allow you to use them interchangeably. There's really no point in distinguishing them, nor is there any easy way of doing so other than "I like Batman so DC is better."

I own the Sentinel and while it is probably the best model that Wizkids ever put out, it's not terribly useful in game unless you give it a lot of support.

It's pretty much just a big target without some good backup.
