Title: Mistborn amazon links
Post by: Spriggan on July 19, 2006, 05:12:04 PM
Fell mentioned to me that he'd like some links to Brandon's book on the site so I've added it on the forum, index and article pages,  let me know if they're placement is annoying.  I don't think this will be a permanent thing, but will probably pop-up now and again to promote TWG member's products.

you'll note that I can't see ANY content there nor can I enter data on the post pages. This is not good. Ads should not do this.

the "post reply" page.

frankly, the ad shouldn't be there at all if we can't do better than this.

I don't like having a popup that stays in place either. Put it in as a small ad somewhere discreet, not a floating flash thing.

That was annoying.

Maybe you can just cover up Brandon's entire section of the forum with the ad? You know, so we won't be able to get into it.

Wow, you know you people don't have to be jerks about it.  That's the only place for a vertical add on the forum without recoding the whole table structure.

Who's being a jerk? You asked people to post their opinion. We did.

It was more of a reply to Gemm.

It's the best way to get anthing done. Plus Wit and Sarcasm don't exude their self very well over the intertron.

except you were lacking any amount of wit there and just came off as snide and un-helpful unlike Ent and SE's comments.

And just to be one step more Frank, I don't really like the google ads either. But they're not so obtrusive and flashy. Maybe just put the mistborn ad on the front page, eh?

Is that less... purple meanie?

we get most of our traffic here, over 60%, so ads on the forum is here to stay.  I'll work something out, not sure what though.

I really should just leave this at this, but why?

I'll just continue with my snide comments and un-helpful ways while you bagger me with your snarky IT skills and limitless expanse.

Well we got it in a place Fell and I like, I need to check to see if I can change some of the padding since I need to shave about 3 pixels off to get to our original header size, but besides that I think this will be the look for a while.

Ideally we'll be resizing that block a bit, but so far we can't find any way to do it--it's all pre-sized by Amazon.

Excellent placement of the Mistborn Ad on the front page.  I don't suppose the same thing could be done on the rest of the pages...?

It works on the front page because there is a space there. It doesn't work on the forums, because there isn't a space just lying empty. It's filling space thats already been filled.

What's up with the amazon link now? There's no Mistborn ad, just a "shop now and save" flashing ad. If it's Mistborn, I think it's fine, but the flashing Amazon thing? Not so much. Is it actually making the site more money or something?

Amazon randomly replaces these adds with their banner every once and a while.  Nothing we can do about it, it's just part of the program.

When you buy a copy of Elantris through these links, we make about 70 cents; that's better than nothing, but it emphasizes the point that we didn't put these ads up to make money, we put them up to help Brandon. We want you to buy his book, regardless of where or how, and if the ad makes it easier then hooray.

Oh, no, I don't mind that part. It was the banner part, which Sprig explained. I was just thinking that if the Mistborn ad had disappeared, it wasn't much point having the Amazon thing there. But now I get it.

A page and paragraph source from the DMG.

So.... why is part of the graphic cut off? I know that the "or Buy Now $17.61" isn't as important as the cover art itself, but it doesn't look so great to have part of the image sliced off, imo. The weird thing is that I don't think it used to be like that.... huh.

it's always been like that for me.

Because Amazon is lame, the image can't be resized. Since we couldn't find a less obtrusive place to put it, we compromised by hiding some of it. It has always been cut off, except for the very first day when we were toying around with it to make it look good.

So the ad is no longer for Mistborn, but just for Amazon generally?  Have we now officially sold out to the man?

No, actually now it does have to do with selling out to the Man.
