Oh! Oh!  Thank you!

I'd heard about that clip but no one had a link to it.  I laughed, I cried; it moved me Bob.

That is hillarious, yet slightly exemplifies the generic nature of Outcast.

Lol.

So, most of the Korean text says.  "Dangun Song"  Which means "Carrot Song."  Or, at least, 'Dangun' means 'carrot.'  Song is not Korean....

This is spliced in with lots of 'I love you!'s and 'I like it!'s (The second one kind of means 'Everything is great' in the colloqual.)

Wow.  I'm a little surprised I could still read that...

These are frighteningly good ideas.

"15 January 2005
From New Scientist Print Edition. Subscribe and get 4 free issues.
THE Pentagon considered developing a host of non-lethal chemical weapons
that would disrupt discipline and morale among enemy troops, newly
declassified documents reveal.

Most bizarre among the plans was one for the development of an "aphrodisiac"
chemical weapon that would make enemy soldiers sexually irresistible to each
other. Provoking widespread homosexual behaviour among troops would cause a
"distasteful but completely non-lethal" blow to morale, the proposal says.

Other ideas included chemical weapons that attract swarms of enraged wasps
or angry rats to troop positions, making them uninhabitable. Another was to
develop a chemical that caused "severe and lasting halitosis", making it
easy to identify guerrillas trying to blend in with civilians. There was
also the idea of making troops' skin unbearably sensitive to sunlight.

The proposals, from the US Air Force Wright Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio, date
from 1994. The lab sought Pentagon funding for research into what it called
"harassing, annoying and 'bad guy'-identifying chemicals". The plans have
been posted online by the Sunshine Project, an organisation that exposes
research into chemical and biological weapons.

Spokesman Edward Hammond says it was not known if the proposed $7.5 million,
six-year research plan was ever pursued."

They should develop that aphrodisiac and then use it on the arab terrorist groups, just for the irony value.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff found on the Internet V
Post by: Skar on January 14, 2005, 07:55:41 PM
I don't think that would be ironic at all considering how many of the arabs/middle-eastern muslims I met overseas were butt-pirates. (a rather large percentage.  I suspect it's what happens normally when you don't let little boys play with little girls but instead force them to play exclusively with other little boys until they're in their late twenties, and then they get married)

Story:
I and my partner were being driven around Kuwait city by one of my local friends and we were discussing the heartaches women give men.  We went down the normal conversational roads such discussions usually take for a few minutes and then Abdul turned to my partner and I and vehemently said, "And if things don't work out with the women we will go the other way, right guys?"  He shook his fist at the universe as he said this.

My partner and I looked at each other with raised eyebrows and then I said, "Uh, no Abdul, we won't."

He was embarrassed but soon got over it and when we returned to the stabucks in downtown Kuwait we were all back to scoping out the women.

18 years old at the time of the 93 bombing of the World Trade Center
16 years old when Operation Desert Storm began
15 years old during the fall of the Berlin Wall
11 years old when the space shuttle Challenger exploded
9 years old when Apple introduced the Macintosh
8 years old during Sally Ride's travel in space
6 years old when Pres. Reagan was shot by John Hinckley, Jr.
5 years old at the time the Iran hostage crisis began
a 1 year old on the U.S.'s bicentennial Fourth of July
not yet 1 year old when President Nixon left office

--In fact, I was 2 days old when Nixon left office.

The front page of Newgrounds right now has a link to  There She Is! part 2, the sequel to the awesome flash about the cat and the rabbit in love. It's called Cake Dance, and is about him trying to get her a birthday cake. Really nice music.  My new favourite flash video.

I'm not linking because I don't know where to get it besides Newgrounds, and if you know how to get to newgrounds, you probably already know to be wary of porn banners etc.

couple of points:
the antagonist has a name that some will find offensive. All other swearing has already been edited out.
the color scheme at the top of the page is offensive. It gave me a headache. Solve this by scrolling down till it's off screen.
for the non technical, 127.0.0.1 is what we call a "loopback" IP address. No one has that as a real address. by pinging 127.0.0.x, you are testing the networking setup on YOUR OWN COMPUTER. Something any hacker should know.

Title: Re: Cool Stuff found on the Internet V

heh, it never guessed any of the ones I chose, in fact it's just the same symoble repeated over and over.  So every time you load it the first symbol is the same.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff found on the Internet V
Post by: Jelly_Belly on June 08, 2005, 05:07:03 PM
Duh, but did you follow the instructions? You're not suppose to just choose any number, you're suppose to take a number, add the two numbers together and then subtract the sum, i.e. 64 would be 6 + 4 = 10. 64 -10 = 54. Then find 54 on the list and think about that symbol when you click on the crystal ball. Try it that way.

Title: Re: Cool Stuff found on the Internet V
Post by: Spriggan on June 09, 2005, 04:57:20 AM
Ya I did it the math right.  Here's how the program actually works and I can tell you how it wasn't working for me and maybe SE.  Every time you click the crystal ball all the actual possible numbers, 81, 72, 67, 63, 54, 45, 36, 29, 27, 18, 16, and 9 all  become the same symbol and then change after the fadeout.  So what I was doing was adding up the numbers and the clicking the ball and checking that symbol against the new "reset" symbols and numbers which is what gave me the wrong answer.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff found on the Internet V
Post by: Jelly_Belly on June 09, 2005, 01:23:52 PM
Well, I'm not sure what you mean, but when you do it right, you always get a multiple of 9. All the 9 multiples have the same symbol which changes each time you do it again and until you figure this out, it seems like it's reading your mind, which I think is fun.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff found on the Internet V
Post by: Fellfrosch on June 09, 2005, 02:37:41 PM
Now I'm intrigued on a mathematical level (which rarely happens). For me, the page works perfectly and always gives every possible answer the same symbol--and every possible answer is, as Jelly said, a multiple of 9. Is there a way to follow this instructions and arrive at a number that isn't a multiple of 9? You got a few on your list there, Sprig, but I can't figure out how to get them.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff found on the Internet V
Post by: The Holy Saint, Grand High Poobah, Master of Monkeys, Ehlers on June 09, 2005, 04:01:10 PM
I haven't found one that gave an answer not a multiple of 9 either. However, when I looked at the symbol, and clicked the thing, a different one came up once.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff found on the Internet V
Post by: Archon on June 09, 2005, 07:28:07 PM
Fell, it isn't a matter of which number you choose, if you do it the way you are supposed to, then any number will work. The thing is though, that the symbols change when you click the ball, so Sprig clicked the ball, waited for the symbol to change, and then checked the symbols, instead of checking the symbol beforehand.

I know that it doesn't matter which one you choose, because all of the correct answers have the same symbol--what I'm wondering (completely apart from the puzzle) is how he arrived at a number that is not a multiple of 9.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff found on the Internet V
Post by: Spriggan on June 09, 2005, 10:32:11 PM
because I just looked at all the symobls that were the same everytime they reset.  So even if they aren't a multiple of nine they still had the same symbol as the multiples of nine.  It's called lazyness.

Heh. You americans are wierd.

I'm confused though - I know that they will have built the wooden buildings (i can see the mdf boards on some of them (and I nearly typed that as .mdf, nerd that i am)) but since when does America have castle towers (http://www.bristolpage.com/virginia/images/DSC36.jpg)? Add to that random bits of church-like wall, and a small bridge, and it appears they had some stonemasons on hand :o

Plus: I think he's talking bull about getting paranoid - how can you both be relaxed and paranoid?

Good link though :)

Yeah. Someone originally really put a lot of time and effort into it. I wish someone would come along now and restore it--it's pretty cool. But it probably went out of business, so it's doubtful that the person who bought the land would make it into a Ren.Faire again.  :(

A few of my coworkers are in groups that perform at the Washington Ren. Faire--apparently, they do Shakespeare performances at it. So I think I'm going to try to make it to it, though the money thing might get in the way. The fact that I have none, that is. But it's something to keep in mind for next year if I don't make it this year.

Test that says what kind of player you are. Fun.

You scored as Storyteller. You're more inclined toward the role playing side of the equation and less interested in numbers or experience points. You're quick to compromise if you can help move the story forward, and get bored when the game slows down for a long planning session. You want to play out a story that moves like it's orchestrated by a skilled novelist or film director.

Not likely.  It's just a long sales pitch designed to look like an instructional page just long enough to get you to send a check to the author of the seminar/books/videos.

Some of the things they say in the sales pitch are downright silly.

For example: "Properly applied, you will never have to use physical force to protect yourself because you will never find yourself in a situation where violence is likely."

This ignores the fact that most violent crime is committed by predators who are actively looking for people who aren't expecting to be violently attacked.  Like people walking from the mall to their car.  What techniques will teach you how to avoid walking from the mall to your car?

This guy makes some good points, like the idea that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, implying that you don't go into dangerous situations.  And that learning to be alert to your surroundings is more important than being a kungfu master, but on the whole he's just another blowhard trying to sell you his video.

He makes the same claims to "street experience" the people he so vociferously villifies do.

I haven't seen this brought up yet.  Orson Scott Card has started an online SF&F fiction mag with reviews and columns and everything.

I think they've hit on the best model yet.  I paid for the first issue just to support the idea but the couple of stories I've read so far have been well worth it already.  I'll be buying the next.

They pay 6 cents a word up to $500, which is not a cap on story length just a cap on the payment.  Not bad.  I think I'll be submitting a thing or two I have lying around.  Anyway, it's here: http://www.intergalacticmedicineshow.com

If so, I'm curious how you got tapped to do a story for them as they were hand-picking the first issue.  Do you know the man himself?  Did he call you because of some other work you've done?  ???

Ok. So since I quit my job and moved cross country I've been lamenting my lack of budget for new books.  Then I found this website

http://www.frugalreader.com

It's free to join, you list books you own that you dont' want anymore and people can use their credits to request them.  You get a free credit for joining and listing a certain number of books (6, I think). When someone requests a book from you, you have to pack it up and ship it - media mail is $1.42 for a paperback - and then when the person receives it you get credit for the book that you can use to request a new one. I've been doing this since August and it's been working out for me - I've shipped about 6 books and gotten about that many as well.  I figured I'd wait to promote it here until I'd given it a try and made sure I didn't get ripped off, since it all pretty much works on the honor system.

Oooh, those are awesome! I've gotta get one to keep Wickett company! I remember watching Transformers all the time.
Of course, I think, in the last episode I watched, Optimus Prime died.  :'( There was broken glass and raging fire involved... Or maybe it was so traumatic that I only -think- it was the last one I ever saw. Dang, now I'm sad. I'd better go look at the Vader/TIE Fighter toy again...

USMC member reviews the weapons and talks about the Iraq war. Not sure whether to take it with a grain of salt or not. Includes a lot of fetishic gun chatter at the very end.

We brits sometimes engage in the same kind of chatter but base it all entirely on computer games and reports pulled from war theatres. Can only get .22 pistols here.

Ah, Paperboy. I forgot how crazy that game was, until I watched the video. I mean, would you really get stalked by ninjas and death and crazy men with knives and breakdancers if you were a real paperboy? No.

I also liked the Tetris video--when the shape started trying to fit into places, like in the shopping carts or on top of a trash can. The music alone brought on waves of nostalgia. I didn't play any of the other games, so I don't relate. But I enjoyed those two videos.  :)

There's some evil, malignant force behind the idea of looping musical flash toons.  You just want to watch them forever and ever and by the time you stop they're stuck in you head....
Title: Re: Cool Stuff found on the Internet V
Post by: Lightning Eater on December 04, 2005, 07:45:37 PM
What'd be really evil and malignant would be one that has a tiny change on the second loop, and then a different one on the fourth, with the changes getting more and more spaced out, so you'd be compelled to keep watching as you're slowly driven insane, and when the changes finally stop you'd just keep watching and watching, knowing the changes have stopped, but never able to abandon the screen, always hoping the next loop would hold a change, but always being betrayed by the looping musical flash, over and over again until you snap.

We're on our way to sky highways. Apparently these would be controlled by satellites so that you would just put in a destination and it would take you there. That way you wouldn't need a pilot's license, nor have to worry about it running into anything else--it would control it all.

would it have helped? Sounds like it was more than just not paying taxes on one award.
Title: Re: Cool Stuff found on the Internet V
Post by: The Lost One on January 26, 2006, 03:12:54 PM
He was convicted for criminal tax evasion, meaning he didn't tell the IRS that he won. So he didn't pay taxes on the award and then lied about it to the IRS, that's why he is going to jail. Specifically, it would be a willful failure to pay tax under IRC section 7203 and probably another charge of fraud under IRC 7207. Plus he will have to pay the tax (probably about $350,000) plus penalties for filing a fraudulent returns, under section 6663, (which would equal about $475,000), plus interest.

A decent tax attorney, however, could have kept him out of jail by advising him to do a voluntary disclosure, which by doing, would avoid the criminal charges under section 7203 and 7207. He would still have to pay the penalties and interest. Unfortunately, once the IRS started to investigate, voluntary disclosure doesn't work and he should have accepted to earlier plea bargain.

Bottom line, Richard Hatch acted like an idiot and should have talk to a lawyer as soon as he won survivor.

I don't know of too many people who like to pay taxes. In fact, some people hate them so much that they refuse to pay taxes and claim that tax collecting is illegal of the 16th amendment (which isn't true).

I think he thought that the IRS wouldn't audit him, which is true for most Americans. However, when you win a million dollar prize, you can expect the IRS to be giving you a call. Or he could be dump enough to think that someone else would pay his taxes for him, which can't happen.
